This is the first skinning attempt...
What shall I do to improve it?

Ooh, really nice! Maybe make it a bit shiny, more gray in the steel as it got alot of dark tints and maybe some scratches?

Nice start !

you need to do by step:
- hightlight the edges (color dodge layer 40% brush 1px)
- generate an occlusion map(it will give you an ambiant shadowing)(put a dome light with cast shadow at 15 0 then go render to texture .... add a shadow map and then render.) and add it as a "multiply" layer
- do light reflexion (color dodge layer 40% brush 1px).
- search a soft scratches metal sample layer, desaturate it  and add it with overlay at 10 % more or less ( it mustnt render horribly rusty so it must be very transparent).

some of these advices should be usefull.
Generally the best is to do by steps:
- color (metal,wood,occlusion map)
- hightlight edges
- details
- light
- scratches

EDIT: sorry forget to say what to do with the occlusion map -> add it as a "multiply " layer

I've never heard of a shadow map, but I think Seth meant "Ambient Occlusion" which after you render it you simply save it out of 3ds and apply it over your texture stack in photoshop and set it to "multiply", then lower opacity so it faintly yet visibly adds shadows.

Simple tutorial on it:

Thanks Taranov:

1: I will change the color to the proper blued color.
2: I like wood grips...I might make the plastic ones but currently I like how they look, even if they are not accurate...better,I will make them too,so I have 2 versions...
3: I cannot acces the link you sent me,seems to be a problem with the page...I will try later,as a similar page you sent me before cannot be accesed too...

I don't know of the Sauer having wooden grips ever...I know mine doesn't.  I must note, however, that despite what Taranov says, the rest of the skin matches my Sauer pretty well.
