The Cosmoline horror, Mosin Nagant 91/30
« on: 29-04-2012, 06:04:32 »
They gave me a Lee Enfield for christmas, very nice canadian made and very accurate...but the ammo is fairly priced. Since I have a minimum wage job I really cannot afford to shoot it too much, so my fix for my shooting fix? I bought a Mosin Nagant 91/30. Izhevsk arsenal, all the markings are there, bore very sharp, and the stock was perfect when I got it, just some marks on the wood and that's all...and shit...shit...shit...shit...

The rifle came dipped in cosmoline, it smelled awful, and the plastic bag where the sling and cleaning supplies came...the oil can was dipped in it too and the sling, ammo pouch and wool toil bag came out awfully dirty because of it.

It was a pain to even dissasemble the rifle. The cosmoline got some parts glued to the metal it was extremely dirt of it and I hated every nasty smell of it. So I wore gloves, got the bolt out. I tried to remove the two screws but they were stuck because of the cosmoline. I had to use both hands to get them out, after it, I removed the two rings that hold the wood upperguard together...and man, it was a pain. The cosmoline was inside the stock buttons to get them out and I had to use a hand and the tear tool to get them off, after that I removed the very dirty cleaning rod...also very dirty on cosmoline and grime.

The stock came out off the barrel and receiver assembly with the rest of the pieces and holy shit. The whole stock was extremely dirty, inside...it was horrible. I got some huppe's 9 to do the job of start to start on the metal, since that chemic destroys the wood finish, I didnt touch it, I used a hair heater for some 15 minutes on the stock and the cosmoline started to sweat off, I wipe it clean after a few passes and then dig it on water, and dried 10 minutes later, and now it was very clean.

The work on the metal was tidious and long. I applied hoppe's 9 to everything and the cosmoline started to come right off...I had a entire bag of gun patches, and by the time I finished with the barrel and receiver and trigger half of it was gone. Then I applied grease and left to dry. I also finished with the magazine and follower and did the same thing. After they were clean, I applied some cleanex inside the barrel to start getting the cosmoline out. I put the cleaning rod and some patches inside and what came outside was...SHIT. A batch of a black hole, the white patch turned very black just the first swipe.

I gave it 8 passes in total and it came out very clean, and I was happy with the results.

After such work, I cleaned the holes for the sling and then the sling and back with normal detergent and all of my work was done...not, the bolt was my last step.

I had to look for tutorials of how to dissasemble it. I did and the tear tool is very useful, all the vids I saw was with the guys pressing the firing pin on some wood surface and then doing pressure, and damn, while I did could dissasemble it like that, it was after I learned of the tear tool technic and it's just better, more efficient and quicker. I had to apply more hoppe's to everything and then clean it off, got some inside the small circular parts and started dumping tissues, by the time I was done, the patch bag was gone and so were half a packet of napkins. I applied gun oil, cleaned the excess and assembled the rifle all together, did the same with the bayonet and oil can.

In total, I spent till 1 am cleaning the rifle. I started at 7. Tomorrow I will go to the range and test it, see how it does. I bought tula made 7.62x54R non corrosive ammunation, 60 rounds and some stripper clips.

Here's my Mosin...I shall call her...Katryushka.

Thats a nice Mosin nagant M91/30 you got there.

I got 3 at the moment

1 first build as a dragoon, later converted to Model 91/30. Hexa reciever. Its a tula made in 1925, wich is rather rare
1 M91/30 with Hexa reciever made in 1933. Izhevsk.
1 M91/30 with round reciever made in 1930! Pretty rare as most where build with remaining surplus hexagon recievers.

I bought tula made 7.62x54R non corrosive ammunation, 60 rounds and some stripper clips.
Is it civilian ammo or is it military ammo? Because all 7.62x54mm R military ammo before pretty much recent is corrosive ammo.

Also, Is the rifle trailed? is the headspacing checked?

As for cosmoline,i know your horror my friend
i know your horror :(

Wow, you have damn good mosin nagants. As for the ammo, this is the box:

It says that it isnt corrosive, berdan primed and steel case FMJ. Today I will go to the range and test it.

Easy-off oven spray is your best bet to refinish the gun.  Also, enjoy the cosmoline.  When you fire the gun, and it heats up the wood, the cosmoline that has soaked and seeped into the wood will melt and leak out, getting all over your hands.  I highly suggest that you take off the wood, run all the wood through the oven spray (This WILL remove the finish, but the finish is post-war, so it's more correct), and then put the wood in an oven under heat, with a tray or paper towels or such under them.  The cosmoline will melt, and this will help get more of it out.  However, it tends to be near impossible to get ALL of it out.

So enjoy, and remember to wipe your hands after firing. ;)

Haha, yea this happened to me too. Picked one up for about $100 bucks. When we took it out the next day to test fire it, my hands were covered. Unfortunately we haven't had a chance to fire it again because we haven't had a chance to clean it yet which makes me sad. I like shooting old military rifles.

And on top of that my M48 isn't firing either :(

^this

As for the ammo......they look suspiciously alot like military surplus ammo. But it might be possible that this is non corrosive ammo. Pvri makes non corrosive for example

If you want pure quality over quantity, i advise you take Pvri and Norma.
Unlike me however, i only want QUANTITY! goood OLD military surplus Warsaw pact made AMMO!Corrosive ammo? you take hot soapy water and it is clean!

Range report.

IT SUCKED MAYOR ASS.

The rifle didnt fire at first when I loaded it with a stripper clip. It was cycling but not firing. Thankfully there was an old guy shooting with a Mosin too, and I asked him what was the problem. The problem was the firing pin. I had to dissasemble it and put it back together twice, the screw and the line werent centered so I required to oil it three times for it to turn into place. Past that, I put five rounds in it and fired, by the fourth round, the rifle bolt got stuck...and I had to get a hammer, a hammer! With soft points to get the round off.

This happened several times. I say, fuck it, and loaded single round at a time, by the sixth round, same thing happened and I had to get the hammer again with the range guys.

Thankfully, there was a pair of cuban duded firing a sniper mosin clone, they have corrosive surplus can ammo, I asked them if I could borrow one of their rounds and fired. Fired nicely, extracted smooth...so the  ammo, the ammo is the problem.

It expands too much into the chamber and that's why it gets stuck, so next time in 12 to 15 days Im going to shoot surplus can ammo, any recommendations? Seems like the silver tip ammo either russian or czech is very liked by people.

As for cleaning the cosmoline out, many people say spray clenex inside and wipe it off.

For Mundra. Nope, the cosmoline didnt melted because it wasnt there in the first place ;) I dont know if I removed it all, but I got plenty out of it. like I said, spent a whole bag of patches and plenty of napkins.

Well, that's all. Any recommendations are welcome.

I meant cosmoline in the wood. :P  And from the sound of it, it never got hot enough to melt it.  ;)  My mosin gave me issues too the first time I fired it.  Constant jamming on reload, the bolt refused to lock into place.  What I learned was that when it happened, I just had to bash it with my fist to lock. xD

Well I bashed mine with a hammer, but the ammo is the problem though. No more commercial ammo for me, just mil surplus, fuck it if I have to clean it everytime.

Any recommendations of what to do Mundra? Perhaps get some more mineral spirits to clean the chamber and use mil surplus ammo.

Yah.  Just make sure you clean the barrel thoroughly after every time you go to the range.

Can I use the cleaning rod that came with the rifle? I have tools as well.
