Sniper tips
« on: 01-12-2012, 04:12:01 »
Just a few tips for snipers I though up whist playing some infantry combat on Operation Cobra and various other maps.

When sniping, try to stay as concealed as possible.  For the best results, try to expose only your head, and on some parts of the map, only your eyes.  If your position is exposed, this will keep return fire ineffective.

Use your camoflauge they way it was supposed to be used for!  For US snipers, you have a folliage pattern*, stay near hegegrows and line up sights with a pesky machinegunner.  As a German, you have a grey pattern*, stalk the buildings and pick off the unsuspecting soldier with a bazooka.  As a British sniper, you have a dirt tone, stay near fields and hay stacks.  Remember, do not put yourself behind a contrasting backdrop or a tank is sure to spot you, or else you'll be using that rifle of yours as a peg leg.

If you do happen to get into a fire fight and have no solid cover around, toss a smoke grenade (if you're using the proper class) at your feet, or in between the ground between you and the enemy.  If it's the British smoke grenade, toss it at the enemy.  You're likely to injure, if not kill them, in the process of escaping.

To have, or not to have.  A scope, that is.  Depending on your enviorment, iron sights may prove to be a better choice, or the scope.  Scopes are suited for long-range target finding and eliminating.  Iron sights are the proper choice for city maps or places that require a larger field of view.  IF you happen to be stuck in a field with a stationary target, you can still hit the enemy with your binoculars.  This can easily be done by aiming the "I" of the binoculars at the soldier and swaping to your rifle and firing.  Your rifle DOES tend to sway during aiming, to take that into account.

That's about it from me.  Nice first post, eh? :)

Some tips=

make sure that your scope field is clear and not blurred on the edges. It means your eye is not fully centered behind the scope

If the rifle is new to you, dryfire the rifle to have a clue when the trigger releases the striker.

Do not squeeze the trigger with the joint of your finger. Use the end of your finger

Do not "estimate" when the rifle fires. When squeezing the trigger you should NOT know when your rifle fires.

Always squeeze gently and slowly. Do not put your finger on the trigger and just squeeze it immediatly in. This move puts vibration on your rifle, offsetting accuracy just when you are about to fire.

Firmly put the stock against your shoulder. Slightly "push it" against your shoulder. This helps with stability and recoil

Controlling your breath is very important.  Breath in, then gently breath out. After breathing out for around 75%, your body is the most stable aswel as your finger shaking. This may vary from person to person. I also found out that when i am at the range, i need to release the breath from the noose, not the mouth.

If possible, use ammo from one manufacturer. When sighting in the scope, try to sight it in with ammo from one company and then keep using the same brand. This guarantees accuracy better. This was a problem with both russian and german ammo. One time they got ammo from factory A, then Factory B. After a while both nations used special sniper ammo produced by a single company.

A cheek rest minimizes shaking coming from your face. Therefor a Lee enfield No 4 MKI Sniper rifle is a very good choise.

900 m is pretty far. Usuall combat long range in (battlefield 2 meters) is about 200-300 m. You have already to compensate for bullet drop at those ranges. The best advive I can give you:

1. Be patient. Learning sniping in FH2 is difficult. Most people die way to often, because they use the sniper as a marksman rifle and are way to close to the frontline.
2. Use keyhole position (see also Machine guns for that). Don't try to cover a too large area. You are exposed to much. Try to find nice flanking positions and stay patiently there. Often enemies appear, just the second after you have left. You can easily score 20+ kills on a typical normandy map without dieing. Be patient. Sometimes you don't hit. Resist the need to kill that enemy, you haven't hit and stay in cover.
3. If the enemy start shooting at you fall back. Best positions are those, which not only give you cover and a nice overview, but also those, where you can fall back and relocate easily.
4. To learn, where to aim, keep the mouse button pressed after you have shot your bullet. That way you stay zoomed in and see, where your bullet landed. Use this for compensation and adjust your aim.
5. Already on 200-300 m you have to compensate A LOT. The bullet drop for a sniper rifle in FH2 is the same, as for rifles without scope. But due to the magnification, the Bullet drop SEEMS to be much larger.

You can't sniper over 900m in FH2, since the maximum view distance is 650m. Most maps have less than that.
