General Discussion / Re: Strange observation
« on: 04-05-2012, 10:05:47 »
I've been trying to get people I know to play, but with hardly any luck.

I used to play battlefield 2 & 2142 with a clan, they all moved on to call of duty and the newer battlefield titles while I played FH2.

Until bf3 came out they moaned about how bad call of duty and bad company 2 was (filled with hackers, bad game mechanics etc). They still moan some about bf3, but not as much as with the other games.

So I just gave up hope because no matter how much whining about call of duty they did they never could spare the time to install FH2.

Normandy maps need moar PPSH kits!

On a serious note, I'd love to see a map where the russians are pretty much only armed with PPSHs.

Maybe if it's not too much work to implement, the german assault kits could get a choice between ppsh and mp40 on some maps.

If you still can't connect, then the cdkey could be banned for hacking thanks to some previous user.

4
Finally fixed it.

Apparently my video.con files in the forgottenhp 2 folder were all set to read-only, yet win7 didn't complain when trying to change them...

It should work to edit the command line in the shortcut to set the resolution. Though, since BF2 1.5 patch the support for WS is native.
Like, "C:\Games\Battlefield 2\FH2.exe +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1080"

Sorry, that didn't work either...

FH2 hates my screen, at least I have an annoying work around.

Doesn't work, forgot to write that I had tried that.

I've been trying to get screenshots of the glitch, but the game keeps spitting out empty images.

Hi guys, FH2 won't with the desktop shortcut anymore, however starting the vanilla game and switching works, but it's a pain in the ass. The reason this is happening is that I bought a new monitor and i try to run the game in 1920x1080, and it doesn't work when setting down the resolution to something like 800x600 @ 60hz either now.

The error I get is debug assertion failed at line 234 in renddx9.dll.

- Replaced vanillas shaders_client with the one from FH2. (This made FH2 work when switching in vanilla)
- Removed the caches and video.con files from the profiles.
- Reinstalled/updated/downgraded my graphics drivers, directx etc.
- Edited the resolution in the video.con files.

I run win7 x64 and I got bf2 on steam, I might reinstall the retail box version instead, but I have no high hopes (the steam version has worked wonderfully with fh2 since 2.26 and pretty well earlier).

Any ideas?

General Discussion / Re: Best Game Ever!

Over the years I've grown tired of most games I've played, sometimes just after a relatively short while. FH2 is the only thing around I still haven't got tired from, sure, I didn't play much of it the last 2 months or so before 2.4 though, but that's mainly been World of Tanks taking up my attention.

It's one of the few mods out there which surpass most if not all commercial games in it's genre. Screw Battlefield (BAD Company) 3, I got FH2 to play.

I found a glitch on eppeldorf. Just north-norhteast of the eppeldorf north flag there's a small "cliff", on the cliff is a small mound. I was prone near the south side of the mound and could enter it. AFAIK small arms couldn't kill me, probably not arty either.

General Discussion / Re: FH2.4 First Immpressions

I love the new patch, haven't used any tanks or planes yet though, infantry has been too awesome.

Played 10 rounds and from what I saw the new maps are awesome in looks and gameplay.

Played one round on each map as both teams.
Meuse River: First round in 2.4, the german team stomped the allies into the ground IIRC we had around 300 tickets left when the round ended.
As american later on we managed to lose, but the german team only had 70 tickets left.

Eppeldorf: This is a hard one for the germans, won overwhelmingly as american, for some reason the germans never got the idea that the area north of hill is mined. Good times defending the hill.
Lost as german by 150ish tickets, seems to me the germans need to focus on capping the town.

Vossenack: Lost as german, but not by too many tickets, main reason was that the back flags got captured and nobody seemed to care to recap, then the pushes towards Hof and Oberdorf got surrounded and exterminated.
Won it as american by 150 tickets or so.

Hurtgen Forrest:
Won as american, hard but possible. Won as german, but that's because the americans only pushed one of the flanks or so.

Bastonge: won as germans, after a hard start, my squad went for Wardin, everyone else went north. about 15-20 minutes in we managed to drive the americans out, thankfully some guys came south to help us out. Then we pushed west, finally into bastonge and it was soon over.
Pretty sure we won as americans, never actually saw the end, but when I went off the germans hadn't pushed past Wardin, and they only had 150 tickets left to the allies 400+ IIRC

I think with time we'll see that the maps are well balanced. Only map that I felt was hard to win was Eppeldorf for germans, but more teamwork will fix that.

On a side note, I would really like to see some of the africa maps now and of course some of the normandy ones but they won't be in the rotation for a while.

I like that you've got the award system going, due to the statistics tracking across servers (the ones who'll sign up for it).

However, I like to imagine I speak for many of the FH2 players that we don't put too much weight on awards and ribbons, that's what call of duty or bad company 2 is about (collecting shiny stuff to feel good).

13
note that I said that FH2 is far below most commercial games on the run-and-gun-iness scale and that delays shouldn't be taken to an extreme.

Most games with delays that I have played have taken them to extremes, and therefore I'm not playing them anymore.

Another thing to consider is the balance between pacing of infantry and armoured combat.
A great example on how pacing is broken is ARMA 2 (without mods), the whole game tries to sell on realism (or simulation whatever), but most vehicles felt like they were from an arcade game.

Also, installing the latest version of PR to see how it works nowdays.

Sorry, but when i read deviation, i read
1. CS cone-of-fire style
2. to-the-point-of-unplayable delays to fire with anything resembling accuracy.

FH2 can sometimes be a bit run-and-gun (though far below most commercial games), and adding some delays could be a good thing. As long as it isn't taken to an extreme.

15
I voted no, but that's mainly out of fear that adding deviation would turn the game into CS or another blasted COD or clone thereof, or my Project Reality nightmare,
last time i played PR, they had a 5 second delay with deviation before you could fire accurately when you scoped, which was not to my liking, impossible to root enemies out of places where grenades couldn't be thrown, like certain caves. That delay was to me always "who scoped first" in what decided who won a fight, but drawn out instead of being a matter of milliseconds as other games.

EDIT: Also, too much luck as people have put it.

Here's my opinion on some of the guns:
I haven't mastered any of the SMGs, pistols or LMGs, but some seem fine to me like the BAR and FG42 for example, but others such as Bren and stg44 (to a small extent) seem bad by comparision.
Bren on single shot on any range is a parcel of shit unless deployed, auto-fire works fine on short ranges when not deployed.
My problems with the stg44 is also with single shots, mostly 30 to 100m range, gun jumps too much to fire the second shot (i usually require 2 hits with the stg44 to kill someone, when not hitting the head). Usually burst firing on auto works wonders at those ranges.

The pistols seem to do too little damage compared to the recoil, rate of fire seems to count for more than accuracy with them as it is now. Awesome accuracy at long ranges for pistols though.

SMGs are awesome below 25m or so, beyond that not so much unless firing single shots. I've found the MP40 to be easier to use than the Sten, don't know why.

I can't say i've noticed anyone jumping from a height and having perfect accuracy the millisecond they land on the ground, if anything, the only people who seem to have perfect accuracy are those that do not move when firing or even better are prone.
