I face the problem that I have to model some trees for my map project. In order to save time I want to make them with a tree generation tool.
So far I found the following programs and plugins:
Free software:
Name: | required 3D software: |
| |
TreeGenerator v1.2 | stand alone |
gen3 | blender script |
tree maker | 3ds max |
Proprietary software:
Name: | required 3D software: |
natFX | 3ds max |
XFrog | Maya, Cinema 4D |
TreeGenerator v2.0 | stand alone |
Easy Tree Generator | stand alone |
OnyxTree | stand alone, 3ds max |
SpeedTree | 3ds max |
vue7 | 3ds max, Cinema 4D |
tree factory | 3ds max |
As you can see I found only very few free programs. Do you know others than the ones I mentioned? Please post both, free and proprietary.

best tool i know is " i do them myself" ;D
-
Do you do them in max or can you do them better in Zbrush?
-
was that a question to me?
i cant imagine how i should do a tree in zbrush......i mean if you want to have a super high poly model of 1 leave then you can do it in zbrush but this is something different. you do this only i max.
btw max have a Foliage tool imbedded. works like shit :D

Just do them yourself....
Its much easier, and I doubt any of those "let me do it for you" programs are meant for video games.

I havn't done vegetation in awhile, Toddel would know more then me about it. But I know you need to learn alpha texturing. Also that tutorial is probably not the best, but it should give you a slight idea of what to do. I.E model the tree trunk and some of the large branches, put the planes where you want the leaves to be. Also you can use alpha texturing to texture small little branches to add more detail, but save on polies.
Its how I've done it anyway and it works fine...

no sir apple your tut is not so bad. it explains the way it goes. you can do it better of course but i like it.
what we do is that we have a texture with a branch on it and the leafes. then we have 3 tris with 2 short and a long edge. we place or texture on it with the branch end to the end of this tris and flip it for the last 3rd tri. then copy it all over your Model.

Thank you again guys for the quick reply!
As I have already downloaded some of the tools i will at least check them out. But maybe I end up producing the trees with my bare hands ;)

I have Vue 7 and you can generate and export trees from it but the results are very high-poly.

By the way, how many polys does the average fh2 tree have?
