Improving Tank Wrecks?
« on: 29-03-2011, 04:03:11 »
It is straightforward, it is a bit strange to see tank wrecks that are so dark in colour (totally black!), I don't think it is really realistic to see every tank blown to such complete darkness. Gameplay-wise it might be good to be able to identify a wreck, but it is not a necessity to be able to identify a wreck that easily. I do think it is a kind of "frustration" the game needs that you mistaken a dead tank as a target in medium-long range. (this suggestion doesn't affect long range because they all look dark...)

Also, when a tank/vehicle is destroyed, all infantry next to the tank died as well. I think it is a bit too much... if possible I'd like to have shock effects (and perhaps damaged to bleeding) but not killing.

And just a dream and crazy thought, that, since some tanks could die with turrets facing the right direction, why not associate the "degree of wrecking" with the turret rotation as well? (or a parameter that changes with user input, which would kind of "rotate 360 degrees") So this would be a kind of "randomization" since rarely any two tanks would have the exact input for movement/turret before being killed.

It is possible to make it, so that when a tank is destroyed,it displays its original texture (or a very slightly darker texture)
then as the wreck flames and smoke appear, the texture of the wrecked tank becomes darker over a preset time

If it worked in MP without significant performance drop ... it'd be wonderful.

if you can see your normal tank wreck in MP (which you can)
I see absolutely no reason why this idea wont work in MP,as it uses basically the same principle, and shouldnt cause any noticable performance drop,as only 1 wreck at a time is being displayed

If this would work (less dark to dark wreck), there would definitely be an advantage - you'd know that a wreck that is new or old - it is very annoying to be blown up when going pass a tank wreck.

(I do want a new computer, but money matters - I want to save it for something else)

Actually the wreck would be brighter if video setting is low.

Battlefield 2 itself is more then 6 years old, so the engine is even older. Every game engine has its limits, which you cant just overcome by using an ultra high end pc. Take just as an example some of the biggest maps for Battlefield, which i think Project Reality has. They sometimes even lag for the players with the best and newest PCs, I am sure. The game engine and its structures where never thought to handle with so many objects, high res textures and such (or for example the 128player thing). Modern engines have different structures of programming, can make use of multicores or can use some of the power, the graphic card has and such. So the question for performance drop is not only a question of how many players are still capable of playing, but also a question of the engine itself, which nobody in the modding can change and publish.

Back to topic: Nice idea. It is somehow strange and somehow arcardisch, that all the wrecks are in the same dark colour. I also support the idea of lowering the explosion damage of tanks, atleast the damage of the second explosion, when the wreck disappears. It is annoying, when you use a tank wreck for cover, it not only disappear, but it also hurts or even kills you. Or is their any gameplay or engine reason, why there is or should be damage?
