The periodic penetration suggestion
« on: 24-07-2012, 01:07:40 »
Hey folks,

I love the changes that comes with 2.45, but one thing is still missing! penetration of thin materials like wood, the walls of north africa (you know, the special ones) or tents!

Rifle cartridges should be able to penetrate a wooden door or a window frame, the .50 cal and the 20mm AP maybe thin walls and of course the thick wooden fences.

This suggestion is just about full auto weapons, not about the AT shells of tanks or stationary guns.

---
+ realism gets improved
+ new tactical gameplay, you will search for real cover now
+ heavy mgs now have their right to exist
+ the 20mm KwK of the PanzerII gets also improved

- lots of coding, changing values?!

---

Lets hear your thoughts!

Ready to roll out,

Skalacy

Can the bf2 engine take that?
It would be nice though...

If they could do this, they would have done it already.

no, no. its possible. look at the crummy iron sheet fences which you can penetrate. this was an feature of vBF2. the question is about the feasibility...

Suggested long ago, rejected because of inconsistency, a lot of work and the need to rework many maps.

I would like to see something like this for AT rifles at least as they are currently severely limited in their usefulness, but I doubt we will ever get it.
This sentence is intentionally left unfinished...

You can shoot through tents. I've killed people that way when I see them dash into a tent or behind one. Then just use a tommy gun or something to spray the tent until hit marker shows up.

There are more penetrable materials in 2.45 then in 2.4. And hopefully they will be increased.
There's numerous problems when doing this, as the materials are applied irregularly. If we make some material penetrable, it may be applied to surfaces we don't want penetrable. So its a large task, and we may work on it where possible. What's stopping us from doing it is a logistical limitation, and not a technical one.

Also I've been attempting to do penetrable materials is for XXL bombs. Unfortunately, doesn't look very promising due to technical limitations.
Got a reinforced position that needs to be taken out? Drop a 1000kg bomb on it. Would make the difference between a 250kg bomb which doesn't penetrate concrete to a 1000kg which could clear an entire area regardless of line-of-sight.

 @ Kev,

if you could accomplish such a task, it would also provide greater tactical nuance to the various tank shells in game.

25 pdr. shell penetrates house but 81 mm mortar would not.

Good luck with that.

it would be a little weird though to be hit inside a building and not to see walls colapse but an intact house. It's like doing spells and this is sth. why I never enjoyed games like WoW or Masters of Might and Magic but only strategy and shooter games.

 Apparently that can be done.

Destructible environment's are possible with the BF2 engine.

 Put them in-game as well,

Destructo bits are awesome and FH2 needs more of them.  I had bunch of them on one of my shitty maps.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZCDKmtPVko&feature=plcp

Here is crappy video of them.

My wife clued me in on lightmapping doors and other moving objects...Sadly I did not bother with this shit on this map.   :-[

Did you  make these effects by yourself? They are really awesome :) Do you think they work well in MP, considering lags and other problems?

Already played it in multiplayer with a full server for a whole day on the WaW server.  I think it ran fine for most.

Effects?  The nuke effect was by some Canadian fella that I adapted to FH2 commander arty and tweaked.  Destructo shit was from the good folks at PR and BGF.  Sub pens are from Dice and with a lot help from [FH2]Herc I was able to make some samples and lightmap them.  The sound effects are my own.  Bunker door sounds come via my craftsman tool cabinet drawers, the turning bridge comes from a cinder block being turned on my patio stones, and the ramps come from me humming into my mic and just speeding it up and looping it. ;D
