Modern AAA gaming
« on: 15-08-2012, 11:08:04 »
aka the "EA is evil" thread... ;)

The problem is the top end of the industry is currently run by beancounters.

These are the same sort of people who, in Hollywood, are responsible for "reboots" and pumping out shit like the Transformers sequels or The Expendables 2... ::)

They know that countless hordes of brainless morons will happily shell out money for what is essentially the same product, but with a new feature or coat of paint. Ever seen the "Lisa Lionheart" episode of The Simpsons? Exactly.

Put simply: It's all about the almighty dollar.

On a somewhat related note, PCPowerplay magazine does an annual "Top 100 (Reasons why we're PC gamers)". This years top ten:

1. Deus Ex (2000)

2. Minecraft (2011)

3. Civilization IV (2005)

4. Thief Trilogy (1998)

5. Planescape:Torment (1999)

6. DayZ (2012)

7. Portal (2007)

8. FarCry 2 (2008)

9. TES V: Skyrim (2011)

10. STALKER: Call Of Pripyat (2010)

* BF and COD had only one entry each; BF3 in 13th and COD 4:MW in 99th... ;D

I find it amusing that the highest placed modern game (one that's < 3 years old) is an indie game, and the second highest is a mod... :)

cause they are real games, simple.

and not all hope is lost for major game developers. Bethesda did a fantastic job with TES skyrim and Obsidian pumped out that amazing FNV last year.

But EA?

Dead space 1 and 2 where amazing, but not developed by EA. Now comes Dead space 3 and it looks horrible....CO-OP, human combat, the entire weapon system is overhauled and made......simpler...An universal ammo layout

AKA to draw in as much money as possible

EA is still the biggest cancer in the gaming industry and will remain so. Together with Call of duty modernwhorefare

I wish people had voted for BF1942 and CoD 1&2 instead of BF3 and CoD4.

Put simply: It's all about the almighty dollar.

Is that not the whole point of business?  EA knows that they can crap out a shitty BF game every couple of years and make tons of cash off that fan base.  Why would they dump years of development time and tons of cash into a smaller fan base for less sales?

cannonfodder, you seem to have very little insight in to how the games- and movie industry works... yet you use Hollywood productions as reference?

When a studio signs contracts for making movies, they very often do so with 3 or 5 movies immediately.

When you use the Transformers sequal as reference, you fail completely to realise that when they made the contract of doing the Transformers movie, they signed a contract for all movies, it's not like they make one movie, then someone else just "pumps out a sequal".... same goes for Christian Bale and the Batman movies, when they decided over 8 years ago to make a new Batman, they sat down and made a contract that he would be in three movies. Same for Tom cruise and MI movies, wether or not there will be a 5th MI movie with Tom, all of them were in the initial contract, written 15 years ago (although in the case of MI, I wouldnt be surprised if they first made a contract of the first 3 movies, then with a reservation to expand it if the movies were succesful and if good enough movies were being produced for that franchise)

The games industry works a bit different, but there is the same plan behind everything, same long-term commitments within studios and publishers. Of course money rules (what else?) and as long as there are X millions happy paying players to buy any game (any product!) there will be a company making that product and selling it.
We're living in the generation of modern shooters now, it will (might) change or fade, or morph in to something we never predicted, but obviously it won't stay like this forever. Or actually, as I have compared earlier, it will, but we'll certainly see more new innovations in FPS games as well. BF3 launched the FPS genre in to what can at least be considered the "second birth" of modern era shooters (CoD4 being the first) and if BF4 will be the closing chapter before we see a new real generation of shooters, we just have to wait and see. Customers are like voters, with an interesting dilemma:
- As long as you buy the games, you support the studios and help them create new innovations and create new experiences for you. At the same time you also support them in keep doing what they are doing. Much like voting for a party, you give them the tools to grow strong and push new ideas, but the things you don't like your party doing will also keep going on...

Just don't spend too much time thinking or analysing why companies take their franchises in either direction, it's just games. You either play them or dont play them. We're about 5 years in to the current generation of shooters now, and fatigue is setting in. Just have faith that evolution within technology always, always happen, and that it will come sooner than you expect.

Much better deserved than FarCry2. WTH.

Far Cry 2 is one of those few games I really regret to have bought. It was so repetitive, open world wasn't really new anymore when it came. It only looked pretty, that's the only positive thing about that horrible game.

modern industry follows the apple recipe. It's promoted to be perfect, but it's intentionally flawed in construction.

It's very simple. You make a product, which is fairly decent and cheap to produce, but has a low life expectancy , as intended. You overhype your product so the fools will buy it. 8 month later, you come up with a "new revolutionary product" that will "change the way your handling modern day technology". There are fools who'll instabuy ofcourse, not knowing that the product they're offered is simply an upgrade of previous one they bought. And here's the tricky part : other users will have to buy the new product also, since it's designed to break after warranty has been expired.

The gaming industry follows the same recipe. In the old days they made games with a replay value and modding ability. but that is ENLARGING the life expectancy of your product. You don't want to do that right ? Yes it produces a game with a legacy, but it won't earn any hard cash. Games made today will be forgotten in 3 years. they'll say COD what ? battlefield howmany ? Same with I phone 1-5, it's all the same, as it is unable to distinguishes itself from one another, while product such as nokia 3310 are burned into people's memory. There are exceptions ofcourse such as skyrim, they follow a different philosophy then most other companies, as they go for quality over quantity  (which pays of in their case)

It's just the way of the current market. Buy play and throw it away. Good for industry, bad for legacy.

Minecraft and Skyrim in top 10, come on.

skyrim should have been higher on the list, but minecraft is in the right spot. Farcry, however, is not. NOthing really exciting about that game.

edit:

It's just the way of the current market. Buy play and throw it away. Good for industry, bad for legacy.

and then publishers cry out loud "waaa piracy whyy" when its their own damn fault by releasing shallow games that are "use and throw" and, in the case of CoD, just awfull ports from console.

What luftwaffe.be said.

You don't make a decent game, but a game that sells.

It's different, and honestly, that list is pretty much well-thought.
