This is BIIIIIG! Why haven't anyone created a topic on this?!

One of the very pillars of physics and Einstein's theory of relativity - that nothing can go faster than the speed of light - was rocked Thursday by new findings from one of the world's foremost laboratories.

European researchers said they clocked an oddball type of subatomic particle called a neutrino going faster than the 186,282 miles per second that has long been considered the cosmic speed limit.

The claim was met with skepticism, with one outside physicist calling it the equivalent of saying you have a flying carpet. In fact, the researchers themselves are not ready to proclaim a discovery and are asking other physicists to independently try to verify their findings.

"The feeling that most people have is this can't be right, this can't be real," said James Gillies, a spokesman for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, which provided the particle accelerator that sent neutrinos on their breakneck 454-mile trip underground from Geneva to Italy.

Going faster than light is something that is just not supposed to happen according to Einstein's 1905 special theory of relativity - the one made famous by the equation E equals mc2. But no one is rushing out to rewrite the science books just yet.

Does this make a difference for us?
I see were you are trying to reach: "how can a 17 year old kid have such a thinking like this? why doesnt he wants to be like normal teens who whana get rich? and his plan actually makes sense, but is too damn revolutionary and good at the same time than is still doubthfull if it works..." - Damaso

not really, and i predict at least 100 years before practical use (as in FTL comunications of faster computers), but ITS STILL BIG SO QUIET! xD

Math isn't reality. It it just the approach to display reality as mathematical formulas. Whenever a formula is wrong, it can be corrected again to fit reality.

Nail on the head, people will react like this: "Pfff, a what? Neutrino? What's for dinner?" Mankind only pays attention when it gets hit in the face. Bacteria? Pfff, call us when we've found ET. Neutrino's? Nah, we want spaceships baby. Spacerocks? Nah..., oh ****. Fin.

I think it's amazing stuff  8)

Must have been a funny moment when they evaluated the experiment.
Seeing the detector pick up a neutrino before receiving the signal that the experiment started. ^^

Is it the time yet, to say goodbye to time as we know it?
I'm taking my own freedom
puttin' it in my song
singing loud and strong
proving all day long
I'm takin' my freedom
puttin' it in my stroll
I'll be hop-steppin' y'all
lettin' the joy unfold

So this means that the loonies who screamed how LHC would (among other funny things, like converting everything into strange matter, or creating a macroscopic stable black hole) break the laws of physics were actually right? ;D

The next question is - can you convey information with neutrinos? Even by "bursts" you could use for Morse code? Because if this is possible, then the paradigm of special relativity - information cannot be passed faster than light - will be broken. Although, as far a I have understood, the quantum mechanics already sort of break it because particles seem to interact instantly, but they do not travel the distance inbetween, unlike neutrinos. (Though the jury is still out whether one can convey information this way.)

Would be possible I guess. Morse code is a good implementation when you only have particles to work with. *thumbsup*!
Still mind boggling to see what this will mean for the Relativity Theory... damn

I would be highly surprised if this wasn't the result of some unseen systematic error somewhere. These experiments are incredibly complicated, using detectors the size of a small house. Also, their uncertainty of 10ns seems very optimistic considering the factors involved. Well, we'll see, but I don't think this is anything to get excited over yet.
