This beam has collision and you get stuck on it while running through the trench.

Interesing. Do you happen to have more photos of british Matildas in the 1940 campaign?

I don't recall having seen PaK 40 mentioned at all when reading about the 1940 campaign in the West. I'm under the impression that back then the only AT Guns used were the Pak 36, and, in an improvised role, 88mm AA guns and howitzers of various calibers.

I found some boxes without collision at Sammatus today (see attachment). It's not a big deal but you can partially hide yourself in them while shooting at the enemy.

Yep, I found it too, and I am overjoyed. ;D Hopefully this is real (not from a scrapped map) and devs aren't fucking with us...

This definitely intigues me. I checked two ideas that I had, Arracourt and Radzymin, but those towns don't look like this minimap at all. Glad to see that more content is in the works.  :)

Since you said that multi-volumes are ok, you might want to look into Prit Buttar's works on the Eastern Front: Collision of Empires: The War on the Eastern Front in 1914, Germany Ascendant: The Eastern Front 1915, Russia's Last Gasp: The Eastern Front 1916-17 and The Splintered Empires: The Eastern Front 1917–21.

Other than that, if you want to read a single book then there's Laura Engelstein's Russia in Flames. It covers pretty much everything you asked for, starting at 1904, but is mostly focused on the Russian Revolution and the Civil War, which it covers in great detail.

If you are interested mostly in the military history of the Great War, go for Buttar's books. If your interest is centered on the Civil War, then go for Engelstein's. Or both, if you have the time/money/willpower.

Does anyone have some fiction reading recommendations? I've been reading a lot of history lately, and would like to take a break, but I don't know where to start.  :P

I can recommend "The Siege of Tsingtau: The German-Japanese War 1914" by Charles Stephenson. Despite it's title, it covers the whole 1914 pacific campaign, from the historical background of the various powers involved, to the naval actions, the Australian-Japanese invasions of the german colonies, and of course the capture of Qingdao.

Suggestions / Re: New Map Ideas (Post Yours)
« on: 24-01-2018, 19:01:14 »
Here's an idea that's been floating in my mind for a long time now, the 1940 Battle of the Aisne:

It's meant to represent the fighting on the 10th of June as the germans break through the Weygand Line.

This layout is meant to work as a mirrored-Siege of Tobruk. The germans start with two flags, which represent the furthest extent of the bridgehead gained on the 9th of June after the hard-fought battle at Chateau-Porcien (the german mainbase), and must capture at least two more flags to make the french bleed. The french can also attack the german held flags, but wichever side bleeds is the one that gets proper offensive tools like tanks and air support.

This is meant to be a back and forward, attack and counterattack map, representing both the initial german armored push and the counterstroke by Groupement Buisson. All the flags initially in french hands are meant to be hedgehogs with all around defence.

Also, yes, it is very scaled, with about IRL 2 km between flags of the same sector and 5 km between sectors.

Do any other games use it?

RO2/RS1 has squadleader spawn much like FH2, and the community seems to be fine with it. Sure, you sometimes get spawnkilled, but you can always choose to spawn in a standard (fixed) spawnpoint. Unlike FH2, IIRC the deathcam shows your SL by deafult, meaning that you have more information to help you decide wether spawning on the SL is worth the risk or not.

Additionally, you can also spawn in APCs and in certain fixed MGs, but that is far rarer and map-dependant.

In RS2 there are both systems present: USA/Australia have squadleader spawn, while VC/NVA have tunnel spawn (anlogous to the RP, but of course much closer to BF:VN's squad tunnels). Having played ~40h of that game, I have to say that SL spawn is better, just because it is more foolproof. Both systems can be camped, but SL spawn just requires the SL to be alive in order for it to work. Far to many times I've played rounds as VC/PAVN and no one would be bothered to place the tunnels, or placed them at useless or horribly exposed positions.

You're not going to play a 10 years old  game with this level of historical accuracy without being interested in it.

I disagree with this as well, since FH2 got me interested in WW2 and not the other way around. When I started playing almost four years ago, I only had a passing interest in WW2. It was only until I started playing FH2, and realized that there was much more to it than the American liberation of France (as I had been taught by TV and games), that I started craving for more knowledge about it.

Different people, different motivations, I guess.

Community Polls / Re: Best Conquest Map
« on: 31-12-2017, 10:12:21 »
In order of appearance in the poll:

1) Sidi Rezegh

Definately the most intense of the non-push FH2 maps. Whenever I have taken breaks from FH2, and then come back, this is the map that remembers me why I love this mod. The armour imbalance between defenders and attackers creates some really intense and desperate fights for the airfield and the surrounding trenches. Tanks clashing with anti-tank guns, infantry trying to leapfrog from crater to crater, machine guns sweeping the ground, the threat of artillery always looming - it's definately not the most infantry friendly map, and I like it for that.

2) Vossenack

This is one of the few maps where I tank regularly. It has a good compromise between tank-friendly plains and the close-quarter forests and towns. You can flank around the edge of the map if you feel like it, or meet the enemy at the center of the map, or support infantry in their pushes in the town-flags. As infantry, playing in Vossenack itself is really fun. The flags feel well connected, meaning that fighting between flags is also fun and relying on transport rushes isn't the best option.

3) Arad

A new classic. The eastern-european atmosphere is top notch, and the variety of terrain means that all flags feel unique. It provides space for close to medium range fighting, in the towns and the center forest, but also long-range fighting around the northern field. Tanking is fun and you have a nice selection of vehicles to choose from.

Honourable mention goes to Siege of Giarabub. You're storming an ottoman fort, as australian soldiers, against italians. How cool is that? The only problem is that the map is a bit dated desing-wise; I guess if it were to be made nowadays it wouldn't be so maze-like.

Can you elaborate (without spoilers)? Was it just bad or was it completely unoriginal like TFA?

According to War Without Garlands, during the late-1941 fighting around Moscow the germans started cannibalising specialised personnel, such as tank crews, to bolster the mauled rifle divisions. Soviets would often shoot on the spot any tanker-turned-infantrymen they captured, since they mistook the tank crew outfits for SS uniforms.

I know that's not the answer you were looking for but I thought it was a nice piece of trivia.  :P

Are you making these models and textures alone? That's quality of whole mod-team...
Yes, it is just me, although I can't take credit for some of the models/textures. I have downloaded quite a few from free model sites. While I did have to do a LOT of work (re-model parts, re-wraps, partial re-skins, etc) to some of them to get them ready for the game, some of these were done by someone else.

From the Moddb comments section. It could be the FH1 model modifield without permission, after all.
