Title: Which maps are based on real places
Post by: Dancho on 23-05-2016, 00:05:50
Hello guys.
I want to ask which of the maps are remake of real pieces of land. And also which are scaled and which are 1:1. That's all. Have a good night!

From the top of my head:

1:1

Point du Hoc
Gold Beach
Omaha Beach
Purple Heart Lane
Anctoville
Lebisey
St. Lo Breakthrough
Hurtgen Forest
Vossenack (note that the American main in Vossenack is the last flag of Hurtgen ;) )
Seelow Heights
Giarabub
Sfakia

Scaled, but very close to the actual landscape

Mount Olympus
Pegasus Bridge
Port en Bessin
Operation Goodwood
Falaise Pocket
Brest
St Vith
Dukla Pass
Keren
Siege of Tobruk
Sidi Rezegh (The big building isn't actually there irl, it was in Capuzzo I believe)
Fall of Tobruk
Mersa Matruh
Alam Halfa
Sidi Bou Zid

Very heavily scaled or completely made up

Villers Bocage
Operation Cobra
Operation Lüttich
Operation Totalize (this is a remake of a BF2 map in fact)
Eppeldorf
Bastogne
Meuse River
Sammatus
Arad (The heightmap is from a real place, but it looks nothing like the map)
Bardia
Crete
Gazala
Operation Hyacinth
El Alamein
Operation Supercharge
Mareth Line
Tunis

Ramelle Neuville is a special case because it is a 1:1 copy of a fictional place ;)

Note that this is not an indication of map quality. You will also notice that most 1:1 maps are in western Europe: This is because the heavily built up landscape and especially the Normandy hedgerow country best lend themselves to being turned into a video game map directly. In Africa and Eastern Europe the distances between points of interest become so huge, that it is very hard to properly remake them.
For instance, if you ever thought that Dukla was an open hellscape, remind yourself that it is scaled down by half ;).

Thank Ts4EVER for lising them. Also Dukla scaled on half? I know you said it is scaled "a bit, not that you will notice normally". However, it is still nice map that I love to play (my kind of maps). Which is the area Arad's heigh map is from?

Look at the town of Arad and the shape of the river. It is just the heightmap though, irl there is a town there and a star fort from the 19th century ;)

@ Dukla, yes IIRC it is scaled by half, however, due to the way fov works in BF2 and because most effective ranges are also scaled by half in FH2, you probably won't notice unless you know what you are doing. (Or I tell you)
