Title: Gaming News
Post by: Ciupita on 08-08-2013, 20:08:52
I find we have need for a thread like this.

In this thread, post news from game industry, researches related to gaming and so on. If news are about particular game title, you should share it in that title's thread or make one, if it doesn't exist.

- News articles must contain link to source.
- Discussion about news is allowed in this thread
- When posting a new article, type headline with BIG BLUE TEXT to make it stand out from other discussion.
- If articles are in different language than English, please, provide a translation.

God my English is horrible.

I shall begin.

Video games should be made less addictive, say experts (http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gamesgear/video-games-should-be-made-less-addictive-say-experts-50011911/)

Quote
Video games are too addictive. That's according to researchers who think game-makers should make games less compelling, before the government is forced to step in and tackle addiction.

Around one in ten gamers are "pathological" players. In extreme cases, gamers are bashing buttons in sessions lasting 90 hours.

New research from experts at Cardiff, Derby and Nottingham Trent universities, published in the Addiction Research and Theory journal, identifies massively multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORPGs) as being more conducive to addiction in players.

The problem with online role playing games like World of Warcraft is that they're open-ended and ongoing, as opposed to console and PC games that follow a story to an actual ending.

Many MMORPGs show messages warning players not to over-do it, but the researchers believe game developers and publishers need to go further and adjust "the structural features of the game design" to prevent players from getting so deeply absorbed.

Elements that could be changed include "the character development, rapid absorption rate and multi-player features, which could make them addictive and or problematic for some gamers."

The Association for UK Interactive Entertainment (UKIE) says there are measures in place to make sure players enjoy games safely, but admits that, "like anything enjoyable in life, some people play games excessively."

The researchers warn that if the problem is not tackled, the government could be forced to follow the example of China, where a time limit is imposed on games.

In other words games should be made worse. No thanks, I don't need a government to tell me how much should I (or anyone) play video games, because it's none of their fucking business. If someone plays non-stop for hours and then dies its their fault for being a fucking retard.

Good idea with this thread by the way :D.

As much as I don't really like the idea, they do have a point. Today's games are too addictive! Especially when they're good... Or maybe not too addictive but definitely too time consuming - they make you grind for ages until you get to the "endgame".

Yeah, RTS's are about the only remaining genre that you can still just jump in and play; even most FPS's require grinding now. I've never found that much fun, let alone addicting, but can certainly approve removing unnecessarily time consuming elements.

The games that I've found truly addictive, like Civ or Hears of Iron, couldn't really be made less addictive without sacrificing entertainment value.

Steam Adding Option To Share And Borrow Games (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/09/11/steam-adding-option-to-share-and-borrow-games/)

RPS' article on Steam's recent announcement of the friend/family game sharing feature.

Quote
Here’s something I never expected to say: Steam has stolen a feature from the Xbox One, and it’s really, really cool. Back before Microsoft cut the cord on that X-est of bones’ online requirement, it touted a family sharing program as one of the (few) perks that constant connectedness would bring. But then there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth about, well, everything else, so Microsoft packed up its whizzbang new toy and went home. The only real winners in that whole scenario? Us! Soon, we’ll be able to share our entire Steam libraries with up to ten people of our choosing.

Pretty damn hyped when I saw these news.
Steambox will definitely be announced, goes together with enhancing the living room experience. Also, they recently announced the upcoming possibility to share your steam-library with up to 10 people, a feature xbox withdrew.
D3?
I dare not hope for HL3, but its impossible not to get excited.

From what ive heard about the steambox, i will get it as soon as its released.

PROJECT REALITY 2 IN THE MAKING

Quote
Since its inception over 8 years ago, Project Reality has built a large, dedicated community which has watched the mod evolve from a single forum post into one of the most successful and decorated modifications of its time. As Project Reality has continued to grow and branch out onto multiple game engines, one question has been continuously asked; Will Project Reality ever produce an independent game?

Well, today we are pleased to finally answer that question. The Project Reality team is proud to officially announce that we are currently developing a completely standalone PC game, Project Reality 2!

Steam OS announced.

An obvious preparation from the Steambox.

It says it will allow me to install Steam OS on my "livingroom-machine", what do they mean by that? Does it mean my TV, or a current console?
Title: Re: Gaming News
Post by: Mayhemic.MAD on 24-09-2013, 00:09:34
SteamOS is said to be linux based and will come with a special designed GUI that is basically the Big Screen mode of Steam. I think you will be able to install it on any PC that can run linux or windows. If you get some nice silent PC to install it on and plug it to your TV, it will look and handle just like a PS or xbox I guess.

Valve has made "Half-Life 3" a registered trademark.

Also, in valves bug-tracker the title "Half life 3" appeared, together with a list of 43 people who were said to be working on it.

Could this be it... only a week after steambox announcements. Soon...

I read some of his books. Not really something I would read all the time but it was ok.
I really enjoyed Ghost Recon 1, Splinter Cell 1-3 and Rogue Spear (I don't remember that much of the latter) but I cannot say that the latest games of the series really shine like the old ones (RS6V was not bad, but it was not that tactical anymore. Same for GRAW 2 which had some nice features (3 possible reloads for one gun <3) but the levels were too tunnel like and it lacked the atmosphere of the first game)
I would be interested, how much of the actual story is or was left in the games.

It can be fake, it can be real. Keep in mind, bethesda, simular to Valve and Konami, are big trolls. They said "no comment" to any questions people asked regarding this site

Can it be that this IS a fallout annouchement...Can it be that this is fake, bethesda knows this, yet keeps everything running and saying "no comment"..

The skyrim engine is well tuned now...I dont see why they wont use it for a new fallout. Then again...who knows

So... Moddb Editor's Choice for Mod of the Year just came out.

I'm really pleased with the choices this year. OGSE 0693 won the singleplayer category and it really deserved it. Within the western STALKER community is not as well known or as hyped as other mods, but it is surely very solid and achieves what it sets out to do: add new quests that fit the existing lore, add new game mechanics and improve the AI.

Ascendancy deserve their overall 1st place award as well. It's rare to see mods (at least for Sins of a Solar Empire) that focus on sensible faction design and polish. I rarely play SoaSE game without this mod.

"This War of Mine" is 80% off, which will be ending soon. :)

I highly recommend the game. Very atmospheric and yes, grim at times.

Btw, I think Steam Summer Sale starts tomorrow?

For people living under a rock: E3 is going on now.

Anyone saw EA's press conference? Short story: it was terrible. Short trailer of BF5 in the beginning, lots of sport games to keep EA economically afloat, three indie games and Anthem. Anthem looked like one of the most generic games ever. I cannot think that will sell well.

However, worst moment was when they dragged out Command & Conquers corpse from the grave and sexually molested it in the form of a mobile game.

Look at the impressive like/dislike-bar

Total lack of respect towards the C&C Fans.

Never been one myself, barely played Generals, but there was no need to revive it only to humilliate it.

Pfft, first they killed Generals 2, then there was that stupid CnC browser game and now this! Looks like EA is hell-bent on destroying everyone's childhood...

Good that people still make decent mods for Generals/Zero Hour and there's even a standalone of all the old CnC games up to Red Alert 2

And Bethesda did something nobody asked for: Fallout Online.

Good job...

E3 was a pure cringe fest again. The disconnect between players and video game producers is incredible.

I would have been fine with Fallout coop despite even friends being able to mess up such an experience but an online game will the most disruptive experience you have ever had in a game that had Fallout written on it.

I think the only thing that would make Fo76 playable are Roleplay servers, strict RP servers. Otherwise it looks meh to me. Sad.

Command & Conquer's last hurrah was with Red Alert 3. The C&C games released after that marks its death.

The disconnect between players and video game producers is incredible.

I don't know, but this is a bold claim. There are a lot of casual players out there who may outnumber us the "denied-to-be-exist" so-called hardcore gamers.

Fallout 76 world will contain no human NPCs, meaning every humans you meet there are online players. But I hope this isn't true. The guy who speaks for Bethesda said that he wants to give this type of gaming a chance.

Well, who knows, people love abominations like stilted sedans "CUV" (Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, VW Tiguan, BMW X5) instead of real SUVs. So, who knows, MMORPG abomination formula could work for seriously nerdy Fallout fanbase? You can't even opt out of PVP, meaning your bases will be susceptible to random attackers by online bullies. Seriously, we need specific rating for online interaction. Make every online games automatically M+ (17+), because somebody young will always going to eff your mom when online.

Fortnite is successful because my middle aged CEO, CFO, and even the building security guard plays it. This is why games are becoming more and more "dumbed down". Too many people have moved on with real life.

Oh I have no doubt that they know what most casual players want to play; after all they cash in more with every year. Maybe most players even want "World War II like you have never seen it before".
You have the core player base who will bitch and moan about all the silly stuff in BF5 but will still buy it anyway so you don't need to appease them. Maybe you'll have a few SJW who will be pleased by BF falling in line with their world view and rejoice at the aforementioned bitching and moaning and thus EA can maybe squeeze in a few extra sells. Finally you'll have the Battle Royale fans who are maybe tired of Fornite and PUBG so maybe they can cash in on that player base as well.
What I meant by disconnect is the mix of moderators and "entertainers" that results in something that is incredibly painful to watch. If they just showed what the game did instead of creating that whole stuff around it, it would be better and cheaper for them I'd say. No one asked for that.

For a multiplayer game I think this is okay - I've never paid much attention to the story in games that I've played with friends. I'm holding out hope that FO76 plays something like Borderlands, where it's a very casual game that you can quickly load up and blow away some mindless NPC goons while chatting with friends. So long as all the settlement building stuff is just a side minigame that you can completely ignore if you want, like it was in FO4, it seems like it could be a fun game.

Hopefully they'll still add a singleplayer co-op option though. If the game is based around loot grinding (which it kind of has to be - there's no story or win condition) then high level players will wipe the floor with new players and PvP won't be fun for either side.
