Bolt action rifle rate of fire
« on: 29-04-2012, 03:04:17 »
Now, I'm not completely sure if this is already in the game, but if it isn't, I hope you consider it.

I believe that the rate of fire for the bolt action rifles should be altered. Not all together, but for each individual rifle. For example, the enfield was designed for an incredibly fast bolting action. I know this is true as I own an SMLE mkIII, and also a mosin nagant. I also hope that once the mosin nagant gets added, that you make the bolt speed slow. Maybe not as in it takes 3 seconds for the bolt, but a little bit slower than the other rifles. The bolt on the mosin nagant is a pain to operate and is very time consuming comparing to other rifles.

Personally, I don't know what the rate of fire for the carcano, springfield and K98s would be like, because i haven't used any of them irl.

So in a nutshell, I wish for the bolt action of the enfield to be faster than the others, and the bolt action for the mosin (once it gets added i mean) to be slower than the rest.

Thanks.  :)

No4 and SMLE are to my knowledge the fastest bolt action in the game right now. The difference isn't too big but it's there.

Really it was all a matter of training. The record with the No. 1 Mk. III was 38 rounds, in 60 seconds, from 100 yards into a 12 inch diameter steel plate. However, I know people that can't effectively shoot my No. 1 Mk. III faster than my Mosins. The Carcano from what I've found is actually pretty realistic in the game (at least the M1891, that's all I have). The Kar98 and Springfield are pretty good. All in all, FH2 has the most realistic bolt actions out of any game I've played.

From my way=

SMLE=Very fast
No 4=Super fast
Mausers=Normal
Mosin nagant=normal
Carcano=bit slower, it can be a bit trickier

The fastest bolt manipulation is without a doubt the Schmidt rubin series, especialy the K31's.

I think anyone who has a lee enfield and a mauser, knows that the lee enfield fires to slow compared to its IRL counterparts. Soldiers where always heavily trained in bolt operation and accurate shooting of there enfields. It was primary british doctorine regarding there rifles

IIRC the main issue is that in order to play the reload animation properly, you need to have the gun drop, you cannot work the bolt with the sights up.  The reason is because if they did have reloading whilst in sights, you would not be able to stop the animation and run or such, destroying fluidity ingame.  The devteam has been over this before, and the conclusion is the same, the fluidity is more necessary than reloading whilst aiming.

That said, they could probably up the reload speed on the SMLE a bit more, even out of iron sights, but it currently is faster than all the other actions ingame.  This is especially evident if you hip fire.  Either way though, when taking aimed shots at moving targets, no rifle, not even the M1 Garand, provides much advantages in reload speed for each individual shot.  It will be generally slow simply due to having to sight back in after each shot, generally on a target that has continued to maneuver, changing range, speed, and cover.

I wonder if the sniper and scout could "deploy" their rifles and have a second slot that behaves exactly the same, except it can re-chamber whilst zoomed in...

If you want to create the illusion of faster shooting with a bolt action, just mash sprint in between shots :)
