Hope for Forgotten Servers
« on: 21-02-2010, 21:02:18 »
If you're having trouble finding servers online - I suggest the FH2 forum members download and use a game application like Steam or Xfire - I personally don't like proprietary game software much, but I have to admit it's very useful for finding people to play games that don't have many servers online.

Download Steam Here
Note: You do not need a steam-based game to have the app and an account. The program gives allows you to make a friends list with people (like from this forum)

Download Xfire Here
I have never used xfire myself, but some people I trust have recommended it.

You can also use LogMeIn Hamachi² if you understand how to set up a LAN network. This program basically allows you to set up a LAN network over the internet. I use this with all my friends and find it very useful - and it's free!

Download LogMeIn Hamachi² Here
Both managed and unmanaged modes are free for public use.

What I recommend is everyone on this forum use Steam or a program like it to make a friends list of all the other people from the board - and if you can't find a suitable FH2 server, just log in to Steam and send IMs to other members online, and then set up a Hamachi network to play the game over the VPN.

I check here when I want to play FH online: http://www.game-monitor.com/search.php?vars=gamevariant=fh2&game=bf2&num=100

The only server I know of that isn't listed on there is the 101st Airborne Div. server.

I would suggest using that site as well, since you save yourself the hassle of installing extra software and it is fast.

Doesn't matter what you use, as long as you can find good servers.

I was particularly impressed with LogMeIn Hamachi² a few weeks ago when I hosted a LAN party with about a dozen friends. There was another LAN party at another location with another dozen or so, and we were able to link our LAN connections to play against each other in FH2 and BFP2.

That's just one example - you can create a network over the internet to have virtual LAN parties with friends for any game.

That color combination somehow reminds me of the old Age of Empires, though I have no idea how. Probably some ancient horrible lookings community site had that.

Does anyone know if BF2 protocol still works?  If so, does it work with FH2?

I remember in the early days of BF2, you installed a small program or batch file (?) that would allow you to click on the green icon in Game-monitor, allowing you to join a server from the browser.  I can't find a working link to it.

Dunno...when I click on that icon Firefox tells me it doesn't know how to open it, because the protocol isn't associated with any program...

I think it's in this thread:

http://forum.game-monitor.com/showthread.php?t=1011

But there was a small program that would allow you to connect to a server from a web page.  You get that error message because you don't have the protocol.  I have a strong suspicion that a later BF2 patch broke it.   :-\
