"Role play" tournament?
« on: 05-12-2010, 04:12:20 »
Hey there guys,

This is my first post on these forums, but I've been playing Forgotten Hope for more than six years now and I've been a member of Forgotten Honor since the very first campaign, so I know what I'm talking about here.

During all these years I have wished for a tournament that strives for simulation rather than being "just" a gaming community. I know we have F|H and BFE-WaW for those of us who like tactical gaming, but I'd like to see a more, let's say, radical implementation of military structures, tactics and communication. I'm not quite sure how to explain myself thoroughly, so I'll just write down my ideas, some are more profound, some less, but I hope you get an image of what I mean.

What I have in mind is a tournament with two companies, not divisions, because this military unit conforms the actual size of tournament "armies". According to this, the highest ranking officers are a Captain and his staff members. The individual units are platoons, led by Lieutenants. There are no seperate armoured units, but there are one or two tankers in every infantry platoon. This should improve infantry-armour cooperation dramatically. Only air force has its own unit.

What I find most important concerning ranks is that they should actually matter. Private should be the highest possible rank for anyone who doesn't want obligations. Every NCO or CO rank, be it Corporal or Captain, must be earned and requires commitment and taking over responsibility, including, for example, moderator status in the units forums. This automatically means respect for higher ranks, as promotions are hard to achieve. Also only very experienced members should be allowed into NCO and CO ranks. Talking inadequately to a superior on the forums or ingame is punished consistently.

To make sure only motivated players join the tournament, signups are opened and closed similar to the PR tournament. Inactive players or those who don't show enough commitment are REMOVED in order to make room for new recruits.

Another idea that would enhance the realistic experience in my opinion would be chosing real names instead of gamer aliases (for example: Pvt. Johnston). This is just cosmetics but I'd like this a lot on the forums and ingame.

New recruits must go through bootcamp, where basic techniques are teached. This doesn't need to involve real training methods, as obviously they don't apply to the game. But things that are useful ingame like shooting on targets moving horizontally, cover usage, shouting out enemy units, squad strategies for close quarters combat et cetera. There are standardized methods to test the members' skills and bootcamp is supervised by staff members. Tankers and pilots must go through special trainings and tests.

Battle intervals are two weeks or longer. This leaves more time for preparations and probably more players will be willing to sign up as not too many people want to spend a whole weekend's night in front of the computer. A general strategy is worked out by the staff and handed over to the platoon commanders. This also involves kit and vehicle assignments. The platoon staffs then develop the strategies for their individual objectives in detail, which means, for example, attack stages or individual defensive positions and kits. These strategies are tested under realistic conditions by other platoons taking over the enemy role during the trainings.

Communication is adjusted to military standards, as long as it increases effectiveness. No unnecessary talk on the radio.

I think this was all that was on my mind for now. Much of this has by now been realized by the Project Reality Tournament, so there is a place to go, but I like the WWII scenario a lot more than modern ones. I'd like to know if there's an interest for such a highly organized "role play" tournament and if there would be people willing to contribute to it.

Fantastic idea, 'tis something I've thought of quite a lot as well. I'd love to join it, though I'm not sure exactly how much is feasible. For example the only two tanks rule, that might require some restructuring of the map. But the rest seems within reasonable boundaries. If it is ever organized count me in.

You got me wrong there, I said one or two tankers in every platoon, which would be the individual units. So there's no limitation in numbers, but every unit had a tanker (and not just any tanker, but their very own who they know very well) in their Teamspeak channel. I've made the experience that it makes communication between infantry and tanks a lot more complicated if all the tankers are in a seperate Teamspeak channel. As tanks are there to support infantry and coordination between the individual tanks is hardly to not necessary, this would make a lot more sense to me. The infantry could scout the area and report enemy armour, then the tank leaves his cover to engage, just one example. Providing a base of fire during assaults is an important thing, too.

We [the devs] don't have any control over how the tournaments run, but if you are looking for something like what you posted, you might actually wanna consider joining the PR tournament.

I know this has nothing to do with the mod itself, but obviously this is the place where most players can be reached.

As I said, I am aware of the fact that PRT is pretty similar to what I described, but I like the WWII scenario a lot more.

You could always try starting your own tournament. The only problem you'd have is getting a server. I'm pretty sure you can get a free TS2 server and there are tons of free forum software out there.

I'd sure be willing to contribute to such a thing, but it couldn't be run by one man only. People with web and graphic design experience would be needed, as well as players who have been leading units in tournaments before. I am actually one of those, but that's obviously not enough. Administrative tasks I'd volunteer for would be structuring the forums and companies, creating information threads, writing texts and such things. So, as I said before, if there's anybody else willing to contribute, feel free to contact me.

blegh that would suck.  I play FH2 to have fun, not to be in the army.

What if it were fun? I've never done something like this before, so it might be more fun than you expect.

Yeah I am sure it could be fun. Perhaps start with small 8 vs 8 battles and work from there if people like it.

it might be fun but I just don't have the time or motivation to do more than pop into a game of Fh2 once a weekend or so.

Then you're not part of the audience, which would be those who already have been playing in tournaments or those who are in search of highly organized tactical gaming.

There are many people that enjoy such a gameplay. I consider me as well as such a person.
When I'm a SQL I always try to have my micro working, giving orders... and of course we always have a lot of fun.

I have much more fun in FH2 when I play with others in a hard teamwork session. Honestly: when I play alone, I don't even like the game much. But I love the game because it gives you exactly the possibility to interact with others in 1000 ways.

If you set something up I would propably join.  8)
Don't expect it to be easy. I tried once to organise some FHSW evenings... we were quit successful but some slight mistakes ruined all. You need a stable server (hard thing sometimes... this costed us all our work. When we got above 35 players our server crashed and just a few returned.), a little webpage.. and so on. It's really tough!

Alright guys, I'll open up a forum and open up an advertising thread in the Clans and tournaments section once it's ready. Anyone who's interested is welcome to join up and things will be discussed there.
