I would have to say the world was a better place in the 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s….

Except the toilet comfort and medical science advancement.

Quote
I'm not a huge fan of our future...for it doesn't look too pleasant for anyone.
...
Maybe I’m just old school raised with the general principals of the once common gentleman.

I'm surprised, you call yourself "raised with the general principals of the once common gentleman" but seems to gave up the future so soon.

Me, raised in very discipline, typical medieval era Dutch Catholic monastery and school, I still think we are still too young to judge. And if you believe in science, we're only just 60,000 years roaming this earth, while other creatures that has ceased to extinction roamed for more than 100 million of years. To think that we gave up too much to "doomsday", "end of humanity", yada-yada-yada...ranting, complaining, etc etc, it makes us look sillier than the ultimate creature, cockroaches.

This month's edition of National Geographic magazine Indonesia, shows an old picture of French WW1 veteran, he lost his right limb. But he still have his dignity and respect, because the Frenchies never forgot who fought and gave their lives for their freedom and their land. So this man got a special job created by the government. The message of the photo itself says "Disaster will strike if people have forgotten how this men get their wounds and lose their limbs."

... I havn't given up hope for the future, I just don't predict it will be a good one. I also don't put my faith in science.
and the second story is exaclty like i'm saying... the famous old saying, history will repeat itself and disaster will strike when it's forgotten...
@ CPS, That not exactly what I mean by honor them..
@ Biiviz, I was talking more about the individual every day, person...more than the events that occured, because you could add the "Great depression" and Germany's economical problems along with many others to your list also... even so, considering all the events, i'm not sure we're better off today, with our current economy, conflicts globaly especially terrorism, and also the support for extreme ideologies, like evolution, global warming and "New World Order" for an example...there is more violence in the world today

I liked the old "small village" feeling of the places from those times. :D

I think the McDonald's and such ruin the aesthetic and historic/cultural look of those kinds of places.

Well, there would be no reason to say that if there were no McDonals in the first place  :P, they would still be like...Some great men died in these fields in 1944, during World War 2.... :o

@ Wilhelm, I can't help but to say I agree..

Funny if you think that way, the world get less frequent war than it was during the old times.

In the ancient Greek (probably during Oedipus Rex's era), any man you see on the street is enemy and you'll try to settle it with duel to the death. Think of it as more cultured and less barbaric as it shows symbolist gesture of "we are more manly arrrrr..."

You read too much historical books, which is heavily biased. In the ancient Chinese history, they also write it in a way that make you so impressed that the past was full of peace, serenity, and awesomeness, before you know that the Emperor selects as many wife as he could and so does every rich man. The sons obey his father with utmost obedience, even his father is a no-good guy. Not to mention how women was terribly oppressed. Or you would like to live in England, where the king can point you for treason without a reason and proper investigation and sentenced you to disembowelment, oh the justice.

20's,30's,40's,50's, sure, one of the most corrupt era of US. You'll know if you live in Chicago. Then, I wouldn't call criminals and their lackeys partying over worn-out prostitutes, people induced in alcoholism and gambling problems "greed". Police bribery? More common than today. And in case for my country, it is the era of zeal nationalism and extreme ideology develops. And in Europe, it is the era of the racism, hatred, suspicion, etc etc...

My view for today, the morality standards is getting more universal, there is more understanding and less ignorance. But there are just several cavemen around the world who just don't accept it, the way, the west and most of other people understands it. And we're getting more reliant on our needs, that we have too much to lose and we feel the need to protect something, thus we become "good".

What worries me about today is extreme tree-hugging movements, crazy animal loving groups who value trees and animals above human life. That's just a LOL, but strikes me no fear for the future. Terrorism, there should have been a common enemy to fight on, otherwise, it will be another cold war with another civilization. We need an enemy to keep us strong, alert, and remind us that we have something to protect.

Terrorism, there should have been a common enemy to fight on, otherwise, it will be another cold war with another civilization. We need an enemy to keep us strong, alert, and remind us that we have something to protect.

I'm not going to argue that the ancient times, like the "Jin" Dynasty, Ancient Rome, or even the Elizabethan era weren't better and peaceful times, because....damn people were barbaric back then. However, the oppression of women that you mention that existed in those times is still common today, in the Middle East, under the Taliban and protected by cultural "norm"...It's just not heard of as much.

As far as the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's goes, I wouldn't say the US is any less corrupt. Besides Chicago has always been one of our trouble places... if it's not gambling, or prostitution (which is still common today, but is concealed more...because it has to be in order to exist, bribery same way...) then it's gang violence, like many other places today. The Drug war is also another problem, along with child molesters, and human trafficking, child abuse, and more! Not to mention the huge prostitution problem that Africa has, with their warlords who love the oppression of their people and AIDs which is global. Oh yeah, racism and discrimination still exist...

As far as today’s increasing morality standards...I'll believe it when I see it. There are so many punky teens out there that I can't wait to see how they will handle life's problems when they are faced with them. I believe people are becoming more ignorant and actually dumber and brainwashed by the MSM (Main stream Media) and WWW (World Wide Web)...as far as corruptness goes today, most of it exist in politics...not by the ordinary man.

I agree that these tree-hugger groups and extreme animal lovers are taking matters to the extreme which isn't really necessary. Nuclear weapons are probably the major problem today, for if it falls in the wrong hands, the innocent are gone. Today's major problems is Stuff you wont hear about daily, it's stuff people will learn when they read about our times in their history books...years from now...like we do today about past cultures.

...

So, this was just to compare the reality and the virtual, this is no easy to made something lost 65 years in the past.
Today, expect for the city, the rest didn't change. The wood was at the same place and the fields was here.
The little problems i have found is the descent you can see on the picture 1. The church, there is no church at Lebisey.  And the houses >:(...but this is my problem  ;D
Thanks for the great post Fuzz :D

Lebisey was almost 100% based on that historical map (drawn by the British from intelligence-gathering patrols). I know there's no church irl but I felt the Germans needed somewhere to coordinate their defence from ;) I'm not sure what you mean about the houses though. I used the FH2 statics in positions marked as buildings on the historical map. The bunker in the forest is the "underground petrol storage" on the map, the water towers are there, the AT defence ditch, the burnt out tanks, the roads, the burnt-out houses, the field boundaries, even the orchard trees :D The chateau in the woods is, as far as I know, a fictional addition but it adds a focus to that corner of the map.

Here's some wip map shots:

I'd love to see a Sfakia comparison aswell. Mr.Cheese is our best IMO at recreating historical maps.

Thanks Kev! It's nice to know my archaeological reconstruction training is showing ;) Sfakia was also based on as many maps and old photos as I could find. It's not at 100% scale but the landmark buildings which Toddel made for me (:D) (the two harbour houses and the church) are in their correct places as well as the roads etc.

Exactly how I felt when I was at Gettysburg...Standing on Cemetary Hill, where thousands died, and just 100 yards away, on where once stood a field in which Confederate troops advanced on the 1st and 2nd days and were slaughtered, is a Hardee's fast food place....

But you have to admit that the Friendly's there is really good.
Wow, that's actually pretty intresting... all that development kind of makes me sad really, the facts that the field in which men died are now built up with building and littered with trash.... :'(
To be frank if we honoured all of our dead in Europe that would be absolutely no room left anywhere to live.

Lets live in Switzerland and other neutral lands  :D
