^ Yes, we watched in in school and I've got to say that it is one of the few films you watch there that are worth watching.

Watched Captain Phillips (2013) by Paul Greengrass tonight with my family.

Starring Tom Hanks, Yul Vasquez, Barkhad Abdi (new Somali actor)

So, this is another "based on true story" as told by the book of Captain Richard Phillips that captained the ship Maersk Alabama 8 days prior to the hijacking and his kidnapping by a group of Somali pirates in April 2009.

The story is based on a book, which has been rewritten by a scriptwriter, told with opinions from media and so on. So I can't regard the whole thing as a true story. People who take something from a movie without a grain of salt should be re-schooled. Wikipedia and even CNN has a more balanced coverage on this, so I left the plot out and go straight to my opinion on the movie itself:

It is tense, engaging, and relieving at the same time. So it does not really makes you sweat cold, but enough to engage you in the constant suspense as the hostage drama keeps boiling. Tom Hanks is very brilliant actor, and it kinda shows here, especially near the end of the movie where he expressed frustration and shock, i never saw it, but it is something new. Then there is our American Somali actor, Barkhad Abdi, which play the lead pirates. He is very convincing in his role and quite realistic I have to say.

Other than that, you military buffs might get annoyed with typical Hollywood dramatization over simple military stuffs. They change several terms to sound more sophisticated, and they are too busy (compared to the publicly-released real world recorded audio of US Navy or US Air Force radio chatters). I don't know what to say about this, but the SEAL team is like a franchise now. Surely, US Navy did their marketing right, just like Top Gun did with naval aviation. USAF simply failed miserably by shaking hands with the evil Michael Bay and the silly-stupid Transformers series. Nobody remembers USAF's involvement. It is still awesome and cool though to see US Navy frigates in action, and as a bonus, an amphibious assault carrier.

Overall I give it a glad-handed 8/10. Minus point for claiming it "true story" just as many other Hollywood-claimed-to-be-realistic production has mislead the majority of the world and some already getting people killed (inciting anti-US and ignorance about guns).

I have never before seen any Marvel super hero film. But today I went to see the new Thor film, and it was pretty damn good. First of all, the film is gorgeous and the 3D actually enhances the look rather than distracts. There was no dull moments, the action was great and the fight scenes worked really well. I find many fight scenes really boring when it's just two men punching each other for 5 minutes, but that was not the case here. I guess it helps when the protagonist is a Norse god who doesn't just punch people.

There was also a great deal of humour. Having no experience in Marvel films I'm not sure if it's common, but damn there were some well funny scenes. And the jokes fit in really well. No distraction or feeling of being out of place there.

4/5, would watch again.

Yes, most modern superhero movies after Spider-man (2002) by Sam Raimi are very good indeed. Many argued that it was X-Men (2000) by Brian Singer who revived the genre. But they are not as decent.

DC Comics are more dark and gritty like the favourite Dark Knight trilogy, but Marvel's are much more fun and enjoyable for me.

The highlight of them all should be The Avengers (2012) by Joss Whedon.

I was never into comics or comic-movies either but Iron Man was a really pleasant surprise. And so was the Avengers.

Oh and there was a DVD sale at the local large media store..

9th Company. Many great moments, though I had a hard time telling who is who, these damn Russians look alike so much when you shave them bald. When it was over I just stared at the screen for a few seconds, letting it all sink in. Definitely worth watching if you haven't seen it yet. 7,5/10.

Gangster Squad. Ratings were average on IMDB but it got Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. And the DVD was cheap.. Pleasant surprise! Story reminded me a lot of the Untouchables, that one with Costner and Connery, but the flavour of 1940's LA was really in there. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. 9/10.

Star Trek. The 2009 one. Saw it and thought 'ah what the heck' as I had recently been watching Enterprise (the one with Scott Bakula) for old time's sake. Never saw this one though, always thought it was just a re-make and never figured out it's actually a different timeline. Really liked their casting and even the obligatory lens flare was ok. The Romulans got a bit more fancier with these hip tattoos and their ship made zero sense on the inside but fuck, I was entertained. Scotty was great by the way. 8/10.

Star Trek: Into Darkness. Plundered this one while sailing one of the Seven Seas as I wanted to see what was up next. But it's Khan and Cumberbatch did a great job on him. And damn, Peter Weller is in this the sort of second-rank main villain. He had a nice last villain portrayal in Enterprise as well. Anyways, Scotty was even greater in this one. 7/10.

Not a review but I'm asking for people's opinions on this: "Unsere Mütter, unsere Väter" is a 3 part German TV miniseries about 5 German friends and their lives as they intersect with WW2.

I just saw the trailer recently for the US re-release titled "Generation War": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8sFQJLy0_cg
and it certainly intrigued me 8); it's not very often that a series is released in the US from another point of view with the (seeming) production value of a BoB or The Pacific.

In fact, after reading up on this, there have been A LOT of comparisons between this series and Band of Brothers. Most reviews are very positive and the only negatives I've seen are mostly how the series depicts Polish treatment of Jews. After seeing the trailer I got pretty excited about seeing something like this from a German POV. :) afaik it's set to release in the US in selected theaters in 2 parts (w/ subtitles of course), and then also air on TV at a later date.

It was first released in Germany and Austria in March 2013 & BBC2 picked it up for a showing in late 2013. So I was wondering if any of our German friends on this forum have seen the series and what they thought? Does it live up to the hype? Was it awesome, biased, terrible?

Sorry if this was posted before, I searched but couldn't find anything.

"UMUV" is actually quite good. I wouldn´t go so far and compare it to BoB, especially if you´re expecting epic firefights. It´s got its tense moments, but the focus is more on how the protagonists experience the war. One girl becomes a nurse, another a famous entertainer and two of the boys join the Wehrmacht, one as officer, the other as an enlisted soldier, while the fifth boy is a Jew.
All of them go through different experiences that ultimately change them and that´s what makes the mini series so interesting. So if you´re expecting big shootouts and epic war scenes, you might be a little bit disappointed. If you´re interested in how the young generation of Nazi Germany experiences the war on a personal level, you´ll be intrigued by it.
I really liked it, since you don´t see the "evil" POV very often. There are only a hand full of good movies which show the war from the German side and "Generation War" certainly belongs on that list.

Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

Watch it as soon as possible.

While BoB is good, this is so much better. I enjoyed UMUV so much more. I absolutely loved this series.

Sure, BoB had firefights and battle-scenes. But that's not what this one is about. It's about 5 teens and their personal development throughout the war. It's gripping and emotional. and really really well made.

You have my deepest recommendations.

UMUV was awesome. I watched the series another 3 times after I finished it the first time.

I would almost go as far as putting it up there with BoB which in my opinion is one of, if not the, best TV series ever made.

10/10

The hunger games: catching fire

8.5/10

I was very impressed with this movie. I did not followed the hype, i decided to go to this movie 50 minutes before it started with friends...And i was surprised. The movie is more mature, feels more darker...and the performance is much better by the actors. Many new and very intresting characters join.

The most surprising was beetee...or Jeffrey Wright. AKA doctor narcisse of BWE. I did not knew at all that he was playing in this movie. And when he first appeared on screen..i did not knew it was HIM untill some guy down the lines went "Aint that narcisse?"
And i was like: HOLY shit its DOCTOR NARCISSE!
