Hobarts Funnies?
« on: 09-09-2009, 15:09:05 »
While i was playing on FH2 2.2 i was thinking, why not come up with specialised engineering tanks to help the allies get over difficult obstacles?.

theres the churchill crocodile (flamethrower tank)
churchill AVRE (bunker buster)
Flail tank (good for blowing up mines)
DD Tank (could be used on a beach map such as gold or sword or even juno)

i was going to say a Churchill ARK which is a bridge laying tank but i doubt this would work with the BF2 engine, however i think the other suggestions i have suggested might work with the BF2 Engine..

So what do you guys think??

flamethrower tanks are possible but not in discussion yet
the avre is allready done but not on any map
anti-mine tanks: not sure if they are possible but since almost all player usable mines got removed in normandy the use of those things is minimal. and making them just for the looks seems a waste of time.

dd-tanks have been discussed before; only very few of them made it to the shore and then only had minimal effect on battles. again the time to created seems to be better spent elsewhere.

well clearly normandy needs more maps?, i mean in real life these tanks (funnies) were used quite alot especially the DD tanks on the british and canadian sectors of the beaches and they were used to great effect!, it is only on the american sectors that they failed because the americans launched there DD tanks out too far from shore, thus sinking all of em except 6 which quickly got knocked out by enemy fire...and as for mine clearing tanks, i think it would prove effective ingame since most roads/bridges are mined by enemy infantry, i reckon a mine clearing tank could help friendly armour move up much more quickly to support their infantry colleagues...its nice to see that the AVRE will make it ingame, but how many times will this tank be used....you'd need a map that has bunkers or a helluva lot of buildings for it to be effective, and it'd need alot of infantry and friendly armour support...

Theres hardly any mines in Normandy maps... I think only Goodwood has a pickup kit that has mines in it. So Sherman Crab would be useless.

there is a problem with having the artillery sights work correctly with a moving gun. And as for more maps for Normandy...yea no ****. There are tons of battles that can be done but FH2 has a limited dev team, so unless you want 3 years between releases, 7'ish maps + fan maps will have to do it for you for now.

Damn you right, what is the main reason of the removal of AT mines to engineer class in Normandy please ?
For a reason of gameplay balance or because they was less used than in Afrika ???

Both.  Do you realize how horrible it would be to tank in Normandy with Bazookas, PanzerFausts, PanzerShreks, and PIATs around every corner AND with every small opening in the hedgerow mined with Anti Tank Mines?  Also, there are still large fields of live mines in the sands of North Africa from close to 70 years ago.  Sure, there are still some in France, but Mining much more useful to deny access to certain areas.  In the Desert, you needed large mine fields.  In Normandy, you have the Hedgerows to impede enemy mobility, so less need for mines.

so you think hobarts funnies (specialised tanks) would be useless in normandy even in RL that they were used alot!!, and whats the point in having a mine kit on PHL when the allies don't get any air or armour support? i don't see the reason with that kit, especially if the mines are anti-tank aswell!.

im sure the flail tank could be implemented into this game, you just need someone to make a map for them to be in etc, what about bridge laying tanks, where another tank can go ontop of the bridge-layer while the bridge layer lays a bridge over a small/medium river?, all you gotta do is look at the history for these so called funnies, they were used quite alot by the british and canadians, the americans only used DD tanks which failed to even do anything on utah + Omaha beaches.
