Help with rifle camouflage
« on: 08-12-2012, 03:12:56 »
I have a M24 SWS clone, military spec. And I want to do this camo from the M24 in BF2, since it looks wonderful and it just works here in Texas. Im going to use krylon, but I dont know what base color to use and the rest of the colors to build the camo.

Well, it looks to me to be a tan or khaki base with green/brown stripes. My suggestion is do something similar. Krylon can be good, but it'd be better if you used a higher quality paint. Or some kind of non-gloss sealer.

Also, don't paint the bolt or any surfaces that rub together. With a nice rifle like that, the tolerances will be tight enough that the paint will make it either stick badly or be pretty inoperable. Use masking tape liberally haha.

And I think it's kind of interesting, I'm from Texas as well.

Thanks man. I was thinking of krylon because it holds pretty well, what other paint would you recommend?

If you have an airbrush, duracoat is the way to go. You can paint everything then, even the bolt.

It helps to rub everything with a bit of alchohol, need to make sure its all clean. Plug the muzzle with some expanding foam and tape over that. For optics, put alot of cotton balls in and tape that as well (don't leave the cover on it, paint seperately). Don't paint over any screws, parts that rub together, or any cracks, make sure those are all protected. Start with the lightest color first and end with the darkest.

The tolerances or headspace of a bolt is extremely small. Painting this area is not reccomended as it can mess up with the bolt operation

This, ive heard some stories of Mosin Nagant like bolt play on rifles such as Rem 700's because people painted up the bolt. If you absolutely want it done id take it to a smith.
If you have to shoot, shoot, dont talk.

Always respect the bolt headspace and tolerances. It cant be to big, it cant be to small. It has to be perfect. A bolt action rifle is an extremely safe rifle but you MUST respect the headspace and tolerances

Im reviving this thread to look for help again. Im in the process of buying the krylon sprays.

So far I got:

-Khaki for base
-Forest green

Im missing the third color to make the camo brown stripes. Which one should I use? Also wondering if I should use light woodland green or normal olive green.

you're going to paint your M24?  :-\ If you really must, use Cerakote and do it right: http://www.cerakoteguncoatings.com/

Im going with krylon because Cerakote requires equipment and techniques I do not have. But thank you.
