On this 4th of May, the Dutch fall silent @ 20.00 GMT+1 and remember all those who perished or otherwise suffered due to war.

So, and this is more for the Dutchies I guess, although, the Dutch isn't that hard to follow, I think. Damn, I wish we still had a draft! :D

Including the jump at some point. I think its a great way from BNN TV to bring WWII to the youth :)

one of my friends, a dutchman, told me about this today. if it weren't for my back I would have volunteered, just for the opportunity to jump out of a C-47, or (dream already crushed) the apropriate weapons training...

If I knew about this earlier I would have definitely volunteered :P since I was there at the same time for a couple of weeks, having some kind of the same training. Damn how much I wanted to do that jump :D

Sad thing is, there still is a conscription. They are just not calling forward any individuals. Only in times of war.. I really wish we had a draft again.

Then I'd be a volunteer and would be stuck to duty for far more years than I want. Just 1 or 2 years is something that looked nice to do for me but I don't want to be a soldier for 5 years.

idiots, who on earth want to be in an army.
I'm taking my own freedom
puttin' it in my song
singing loud and strong
proving all day long
I'm takin' my freedom
puttin' it in my stroll
I'll be hop-steppin' y'all
lettin' the joy unfold

This.

I sure had some great moments there, new experiences and so on. Downsides still stomp over the few good moments.

I feel I just lost 1 year off my life for nothing.

Guess it depends on what you do (and character ofc). But I had the privilege to taste a bit of allot of the branches in the army.
Found that with the infantry orientated forces I felt the same as you, although some air force units were very interesting.
But the short amount of days I had with the Cavalry or artillery where awesome. To bad the dutch disbanded the cavalry :(
