Its called time fuse because in real life, the AA shells had variable time fuses to allow targeting of different altitudes.  Proximity fuses only arrived at the end of the war and only for the allies.  They were mostly used at sea where the risk of the small proximety radars falling into enemy hands via a dud shell were low.

In game they are proximety based for the simple reason that it best represents the ability of the gun crew to change the fuse time (something impossible to do easily ingame).

they are called time fused because the crew of the gun measured the hight and speed of the target aircraft and then set a timer on the round. when the time was up the round explodes. if aimed and measured correctly the plane will fly into the explosion.

much greater "hitting" chance then trying to score a direct hit.

since we cant have measure and time setting ingame  (besides the gamers  guess work) it gets a proximity fuse.  you still have to aim well though.

Thanks. Seems logical after reading your replies, but I didn't made any sense at first. :)
FH2 is the game, DarklyDreamingDexter is the name.

Since it's now technically a proximity detonator, the next question is: could it be used to fire "airbursts" eg. against infantry in trenches? That when the shell reaches a set distance of whatever - bird, plane, Superman, Earth, Krypton - it will detonate?

Kinda.  Bofors also works on a proximity fuse, part of the reason the ones on Siege of Tobruk are positioned where they are is prevent one person from raping everything around them.  For the record, the bofors is also Time-fused: if the projectile doesn't proxy-detonate or hit something solid, it will still explode a predetermined range (which good pilots can exploit by flying just out of range of the time fuse).

Yes, I have noticed that, since 95% of the time on Crete Ju-52's will fly above that range. (The 5% that do not are either trying wave-skipping low-level penetration, or are n00bs flying suicidally straight and level at a medium altitude.)

Usually it feels other way around. 95% some idiot flies straight to airfield and gets blown up by million bofors shots. Rarely I'm passenger and someone actually succeeds on landing or flying behind enemy lines. Personally I usually just land on far east part of map.
