The trend is apparently an update every fortnight. Or one every month. Or none at all.

When was the last time updates were actually posted week after week? (excluding the road to/from posts)

Really nice, love the small tanks.

Are there plans for a T-60?  ;D

Here are some nice pictures of a 61-K gun.

I have a huge respect for these guns from my gaming experience -- these guns were always ripping up my panzer II-IVs in the early levels of the Mission Kursk add-on for Blitzkrieg. I feared these as much as the 76mm divisional gun! Although I have never read anything about how good or bad these guns were in an AT role, the AA performance was excellent (on par with the Bofors L/60) and IIRC these were the most successful ww2 soviet air defence guns and also most produced, so it would be really nice to see them! (instead of a placeholder Bofors :) )
But I don't know about any self-propelled mounts for the 61-K (outre the ZSU-37 post-war). Probably some improvised solutions existed, but even for them, I can't find a real photo.

About a more... british/commonwealth low-caliber AA, what about the 20mm Oerlikon? Not sure how much or on what mount these were used, but personally I don't have a problem with the italian ones and as VonMudra pointed out, they're historically correct on the map their allied use is the most obvious.

[and in a low note as I really don't want to hijack the thread, but as I implied in another topic, the FlaK 18's model should need a revision as the schutzschild's shape is off (and on closer inspection the whole gun seems to be ... indistinct) -- but I don't want to seem ungrateful and whiny so I just have a nice cup of stfu]

While checking out references how the sight was placed it struck me that the FH2 flak 88 has the shield badly made...

The field of vision alters somewhat the proportions of the ingame gun and I couldn't get the drawing 100% the same ratio, but IMO it is obvious that the FH2 shield is not accurate. Seems like it was squeezed or something. The shield needs to be more wide, closer to the ground and the vision port ought be farer out.

(drawing from Иванов С.В.: Танк на поле боя №51 - 88-мм зенитные орудия Flak 18/36/37/41.

Maybe if remodeled the blind zone wouldn't be that big, thanks to the lower height of the shield. Also placing the ingame scoped-in view a little more down, closer to the physical place of the sight could help that.

So after a quick search on the flak sight, I stumbled upon this page (I recommend to read the whole article, IMO it is pretty well written and straightforward).

The relevant part regarding the dual-role usage is this:
"After the experiences in Spain, proper direct fire optical sights and dedicated armour piercing ammunition were developed. The Zielfernrohr 20 telescopic gun sight wasn’t any old gun sight or range finder: it was amongst the best optical gun sight systems in the world at that time, and remained so for most of WWII.(5)"
With the citation being "(5) For AA work the Flakzielfernrohr 20 telescopic site was rarely used. Most often AA fire was aimed using the Ubertragung 30 predictor firing system. "

So this gives some answers to my question about the empirics of the dual usage. But I still didn't learn anything about how the Flakzielfernrohr 20 was used against aircraft when it was neccessary in practice.

But I agree with Surfbird that the ingame flak 18 needs refinement. Maybe positioning the gun sight that it won't get obstructed at the most common elevation enemy planes flying by would help as a gameplay enhancing abstraction. Also it would boost german bias.

Still waiting for an expert's input, though.

Another source. regarding the Ubertragung 30 just to be complete:
"This predictor system was an electro-mechanical device" [used at a gun battery level, with] "each gun platform [having] a series of electrical connections that allowed data transmitted from the battery commander's predictor (data transmitter) to reach each gun's predictor system (receiver)."

Note that only the FlaK 37 used an upgraded predictor system, the "Ubertragung 37", which was "[...] two sets of dials, one operated electrically from the data transmitted by the commander's predictor, the other mechanically linked to the gun. The crew simply adjusted the controls until the gun's pointers matched those of the predictor"

Also keep in mind, that even though most common descriptions describe the FlaK 37 used purely only for AA, there's at least one instance of an example equipped with the Zielfernrohr 20 to be used against ground targets. (last page of Jentz's book)

Searching around my references I found these infos in the book called "The Dreaded Threat - The 8.8cm Flak 18/36/37 in the Anti-Tank Role" by Thomas L. Jentz (2001)

p.12. :
After the operations in Belgium and France the Flakkorps decided to give a directive that  "All anti-aircraft guns assigned to the Flakkorps must be provided with Schutzschilden [armor shields]. Further development of Flak with armor protection should be a requirement in 1940..."

The "D.(Luft)T.1101" manual, dated 22 June 1941, described that "the Schutzschild fuer 8.8 cm Flak 18 und 36 served to protect the crew and the gun against enemy fire in ground as well as anti-aircraft defense."

So the armor plate was used in all roles... Even towing was permitted with it equipped.

"For firing against ground targets, the Visierklappe [vision port] was to be closed, with the telescopic sight aimed through the vision slit"

"The Visierklappe was to be opened for firing against aircraft." [as we have it ingame]

p.14. :
"To engage ground targets the 8.8 cm Flak L/56 was aimed using the Flakzielfernrohr 20 [...]"

On a side note, it is very ironic that on p.13, the author cites a report titled "Offensive Abwehr von Panzerwagen", which investigated the usage of 2cm and 3,7cm flak as anti-tank weapons but "not a single statement was made about the possibility of using the 8.8 cm Flak 18 in an anti-tank role". "Except the exceptions of penetration ability and flat trajectory, the 88mm didn't have any characteristics desirable in an anti-tank gun (cross-country maneuverability, low silhouette, easy to handle, easy to camouflage in the front lines)"

The rest of the book has authentic accounts of frontline events regarding the surface to surface usage of the gun, which after a quick run through seem very interesting, but, unfortunately, I don't have the time now for more scrutiny.

I still only have a vague concept about how much preparation was needed to switch role in a stationary position, though, so any expert's input is welcome. (@VonMudra where are you? ;D)

I think the FlaKs placed as AT guns ought to be replaced by PaK 43s (or 43/41s) as they are more powerful, have a smaller silhouette and I think they were relatively common by Cobra. (correct me if I'm mistaken)

And/Or, even though I've never even seen a real life FlaK 18/36/37, let alone check one out (the closest I got to an air-defence gun was when I could sit in an 57 mm S-60 mount and control the horizontal axis of the gun for the lolz at an Air Show a couple years back), but did the real gun shield really obstruct the sight of the FlaK?

About how much is decided to be covered of the German-Russian war besides Zitadelle in the next release?
I mean the devs already shown a render of the T-34/85, so there ought to be 1944 scenarios. I'm hoping for a glimpse of Bagration, or is it planned only for Continuation War maps ATM?

You are those peoples who are willing to eat dog shit 1kg/day if the law say so  ;D

You must be quite an anthropologist to deduct that from one sentence. Oh, and induction is a flawed concept in logic. :P

Also, I'm pretty sure the constitutional court would kick that bill right back into the legislators face in the first place. Ah, the wonders of the modern rule of law...  ;)

If you choose to not use your own brain then do not try to be smart. Just keep eating dog shit.

Perhaps the avoidance of unneccesary confontration with the authorities shows a sign of intelligence.

This is my honest opinion about the law what you people obey. Hitler does not own the trademark of swastika or anything else commonly know symbols.

NC.

Like I say, it is far better for the nation to know its history than forget it. Otherwise they are danger to repeat it.

Ah, I think Germany knows it's history far too well. Like I said there's a collective sense of historical guilt, so I see no danger of repetition of the historical events we are indirectly discussing.

History must be handled with all horrors and glory and not just take juicy parts.

I don't think Forgotten Hope's aim is historical revisionism nor the renunciation of laws which cover a sensitive subject in the country were the large number of the player base is.

Sorry mate, but the law gets more scrutiny than subjective opinions, no matter how much I agree or not agree with an inclusion of the swastika for historical authenticity.

Note, that there's a substantial number of countries which ban the red star as a dictatorial emblem.
Yet, it doesn't stop people and corporations to use them in media other than educational material.
The nazi regime causes much more butthurt than the soviet communist one, even though the latter was as dark and shadowy, especially in "Uncle Joe's" period.

And I think the subject of Germany's post-war treatment and sense of historical guilt is really outside this topic.

Please moderators, I think there's been already too much discussion about this, let us not stride deeper into the mud.
The thread is ready for the lock.

We need some news today to stop this!  ;)

This.

The StuPa would nicely complement the Ferdinand in the northern sector.  ;)

Oh. My. God.

This is awesome news.

A question, though.
Are we going to get the Lahti L-39 "Norsupyssy" for the Finnish? It would be so awesome. Even more so if we could have it portable like the other ATRs. I know it's friggin' heavy. Even would make Arnie sweat. But you know, we could always rationalise it by saying, making it hand carried is for simulating towing, pushing, short-time superman sprint like relocation etc.
Nah, I'm just a fanboy, but really, it would be awesome. (or we could have it as a spawnable kit. Like the tripod mgs, but it wouldn't be as cool as to have hand anims and a 1p model for it.) --

Just a reminder for everyone that it was a fairly common weapon by ca. '43 which the update apparently indicates for the timeframe.

But I'm hyped definately. The Eastern and Finnish Fronts are the most interesting subjects of ww2 for me, and FH2 is one of my favorite games. I don't say this often but this is SO. MUCH. WIN.

Are there going to be pre-S KV-1s with the larger turret and thicker armor? I always digged those more than the lightweight S.:)

HOLY MOTHER---!

Guys, seriously, when I saw this, I fainted. I can't describe the excitement I have for this. No, no, that is not even possible. I only have two words for you - Thank You.

Looking forward to both the Ostfront AND the Battle of the Bulge.

Just to give way for a little speculation; I know it doesn't mean much, given the grand scale both in physical and time aspects of the Eastern Front, but my infallible sixth sense is whispering "Zitadelle" after looking at the shown vehicles...

But I ain't fully satisfied.... Where's mah Ferdinand TD, bitch?! ;D [j/k]

Keep up the excellent work devs, it seems very much like the best is yet to come.

TW puts it wrong but he is right, veterans stated that the NA front was more a gentlemens war. No front could match the gentlemen behaviour from both sides. Good care for prisoners, mercy, etc.
Yes very true -- compared to most other fronts in WWII, the extra (over the top) brutality levels were lower. That said, it was far from innocent!

Maybe "romantic" is a better word?
