War Horse

OK, we have all seen the trailer here somewhere on the forum.

Steven Spielberg, horses, based on a popular play.

Is it worth the 2 hours and 30 minutes? No, it's way too long and way too thin.

I'm not gonna spoil anything (IT HAS GERMANS SPEAKING ENGLISH WITH SILLY ACCENTS!!!!!) if you have seen the trailer you have also seen the movie. There's nothing more to it really.

It's well-made, sure. Big and expensive but it's nothing special at all. The best thing to come out of this movie is the Saturday Night Live sketch with Jimmy Fallon.

Anyhow, it's OK. It's not something special, something amazing or stuff like that. It's a perfect 5 out of 10 kind of movie.

It may look and sound as a 7 or 8 but it's not.

Somebody who has seen this movie, please correct me if I'm wrong but the young German soldier in the beginning, didn't he play in a movie with Kate Winslet just a few years ago set in Germany? Too tired for IMDB.

5 out of 10

Empires of The Sun (1987)

By Steven Spielberg, Starring Christian Bale, John Malkovich, Miranda Richardson, and others... (including Ben Stiller)

This is my all time favorite since childhood. It has many stories and plots in one movie, progressing and told nicely along the movie. It didn't scar the audience emotionally or try to feed you with something. This is a mild yet heavy movie that anyone can just go and watch, while expecting something big.

It tells the story of J.G. Ballard during Japan's occupation of China. He is a British boy who was separated from his parents in the middle of chaos after Japan invaded the rest of Shanghai in the end of 1941. Much of the stories revolves around his experience in Japanese internment camp in Suzhou until his liberation much later in 1945. So it is an adventure movie, a very plain basic one.

I give it a good 9/10.

5 Days of War (2011)

By Renny Harlin
Starring Rupert Friend, Richard Coyle, Andy García, Val Kilmer, Emmanuelle Chriqui, and others

Is a movie by Finnish director about South Ossetian war in 2008. The movie is heavily biased and could be Georgian propaganda. Amongst the mindless audience that watch the movie with me in public theatre, many quipped "That was cruel Russians."

Loosing all political tie-ins, the movie is actually quite good. It is well prepared, the storyline is pretty much comprehensive, and action is up to standard. But realism is very questionable: you got homing FFARs (S-8) and Su-25s randomly wasting its payload for attacking civilian houses, while operating under Russian budget. You can see many Russian military hardware here doing its things. The film is quite gory, it showed many Russian-paid armed militia committing war crimes, which is depicted in detail.

All in all, because the movie tries to be a political one, just look at the tagline: "The first casualty of war is truth," quoting Senator Hiram Johnson of California, 1917.

I give it a generous 4/10.

Thanks Zoo, I'll give Empire of the Sun a go later tonight. It's one of those films everyone has seen but I haven't got around to it, been on my 'list' for at least 10 years now. Time to get it done.

Your welcome mate. That's a good one if you don't mind typical Spielberg's character melancholic moment, but my opinion says it is plainly well done here.

I also recommend The Last Emperor by Bernardo Bertolucci. This is another long, multiple plot, story-telling movie that I like really much.

Watched The Hunt for Red October again yesterday, enjoyed it of course. Quick re-post of review

The hunt for Red October

Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) is captain of the Soviet ballistic missile submarine Red October, which features caterpillar drive--a revolutionary silent propulsion system that renders the boat virtually undetectable. At the start of the film, Ramius takes the boat out to sea for exercises with the submarine V.K. Konovalov, commanded by Captain Tupolev (Stellan Skarsgård), a former student of Ramius.

Once underway, Ramius murders political officer Ivan Putin (Peter Firth), the one man aboard not under his command and the only man aboard besides himself who knows the sub's official orders. Ramius then burns the original orders and informs the crew that their mission is to conduct nuclear missile drills off America's east coast. The USS Dallas, an American submarine on patrol nearby, detects Red October but loses contact once Ramius engages the silent drive.

The next morning, CIA analyst Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) briefs several senior U.S. government officials on the departure of Red October and the threat it poses. In the briefing, Ryan learns that the Soviet Navy has deployed the bulk of its Atlantic fleet to find and sink Red October. The officials in the briefing fear that Ramius may be planning an unauthorized first strike against the U.S., but Ryan suggests that Ramius plans to defect. Ryan is sent out into the North Atlantic with a brief opportunity to prove his theory before the U.S. Navy will be ordered to sink Red October.

While under way, Red October's caterpillar drive suddenly fails, and sabotage is suspected. No longer silent, the sub comes under attack by Soviet forces and begins a series of risky maneuvers through undersea canyons. Meanwhile, Petty Officer Jones (Courtney B. Vance), a sonar analyst aboard Dallas, reconstructs Red October's path and plots an intercept course. Ryan learns of his findings and arranges a hazardous mid-ocean rendezvous to get aboard Dallas, where he convinces the sub's Captain, Bart Mancuso (Scott Glenn) to attempt communication with Ramius through morse code in order to determine his true intentions.

I found The hunt for Red October to be a wonderful film and take my time to watch it at least once every year. The storyline is different from that of the usual Cold war themes (007 and whatnot) so you can expect a few surprises. I would give this movie a 9/10 , plus it has sean connery!

Does anyone remember the movie from early 2000 called Boiler Room?

From what I remember it was good. But was it this good as this clip is from the movie?

I saw it too around that time, but only once. From what I remember it was a cool movie, with a cool soundtrack and some cool up and coming actors (Vin Diesel just off Pitch Black, Giovanni Ribisi after his SPR medic and Friends fame, etc.). So probably still a cool movie then.  ;)

But must rewatch it soon. I remember I rented it on VHS, djeez, 'the year 2000' used to sound so space age futuristic, now it just sounds old... :-(

Yeah I got the same feeling, Vin Diesel closing the deal on a customer, I remember that especially.

Haha yeah, the year 2000 was back then something awesome and new and now it feels like looking back at the 80's in the 90's

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Easily the best movie I've seen in a while, good 8/10 material.  Good plot, well-made, good acting and effects...but the ending did not satisfy me.

It doesn't suck. It's quite enjoyable and the story is pretty cool. But I just wish Guy Ritchie would tone down his style. It's exhausting to look at and doesn't serve a purpose. Not that I'm old fashioned or anything, but in this case it's just visual excess for the fuck of it. The story thunders along without pause which just doesn't suit a Sherlock Holmes story. There's no tension buildup whatsoever. But pretty good movie nonetheless. Downey and Law simply have that vibe. But Noomi Rapace is heavily underused. Why hire one of the most daring actresses of today for your movie and then not give her anything real to do?

Boiler Room

Saw this film back when it was new, feels strange so say it but it's about 10 or 11 years ago.

Still, even with the years gone by this movie has still something to say (maybe even more now than then?). Giovanni Ribisi plays Seth, a college dropout who doesn't work a normal job. He runs a backdoor casino in his apartment. Then one day a friend of his comes in with another friend from their work.

They offer Seth the chance to work for them at their firm since they know he's smart and also smart when it comes to money.

Seth is offered a chance to work as salesman. Selling stock.

The movie is packed with actors you have seen before (I think the guy who played Toye in BoB was in a small roll as well) we got Vin Diesel, Ben Affleck and also Nia Long.

The movie is kinda like a mix of Wall Street (Not Wall Street 2) and Glengarry Glen Ross. The thrill of success, the smell of money, the fear of failing.

It's a great movie and the only bad thing I think this movie has is the lenght of it. This movie would be a perfect 1½ Hour movie. But this drags on for 2 straight hours (nothing wrong with that) but the last 30 - 20 minutes are real slow.

8 out of 10

^^ I agree and its way better then the first one

The Guard 2011

An unorthodox Irish policeman with a confrontational personality is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring.
Well written dark comedy, good conservations and acting, the cop-story is clichy as fuck but it will make you laugh!

Drive 2011
A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.
The first 10 min are EPIC, the soundtrack gives this movie something special, the acting and camerawork are good, i thought the ending sucked because its kinda abupt and it doenst really fit in with the rest but this movie is a great ride!
The Moon is opposing Jupiter. Don't get involved, it's their problem.
