General Discussion / First Impressions of 2.25
« on: 08-01-2010, 20:01:07 »
I've only been playing about 15 minutes so far, but first thing I noticed is some sounds are much better. The sound of a plane flying overhead is SO GOOD now and the sound of the .50cal on the american halftrack is MUCH better now.

Awesome news! I will be busy this coming Friday and Saturday nights but will be playing this straight through Sunday and beyond!

The new map looks nice(from what I can tell without the overall map view of it yet).

Quick question: Is this supposed to be the last update with Normandy maps and are the devs going to another front after this or will there be more normandy?

I LOVE so many of the maps I've played so far in 2.2 and these four 2.25 maps look nice from what I've seen but we're still missing some of the iconic beach landing maps (ie. omaha, gold). Are those in the works or does this release pretty much wrap up normandy?
Were you once a member on the Resistance and Liberation forums? you're name seems familiar. Maybe it's just from the Filefront forums ...

I never heard of the resisitance and liberation forums so....a big no on that one. Must be from Filefront cause I was(and as far as I know still am) registered over there.

Cool. This is exactly what I want to see happen. Western front continuation first(since they already have most equipment and all major armies needed to finish that more quickly) and then onto major Eastern front for the next whole new front. I Just hope the dev's do it in this order  :)

General Discussion / Re: Whats your favorite FH 2.2 map?
« on: 01-12-2009, 18:12:04 »
Lebisey and Luttich are my favorite new maps from the Normandy release but the epicness that is Fall of Tobruk is still my favorite FH2 map overall. (And honorable mention to Giarabub and that awesome fortress city.)

I voted for western front continuation(bulge, market garden, etc). Mainly because at this point(and even more so after the upcoming normandy patch) they should pretty much have everything they need in terms of player models, weapons, weapon animations, kits, vehicles, and a lot of statics they could re-use to continue the late western front war, and therefore they should be able to do such a release far more quickly than a whole new front. Which is why I don't really look at that as a new front but a continuation of their latest release. For a whole front, I want to see the major russian front battles more than anything after late western front gets wrapped up. But that will probably take quite a while which is why an easier to do finished western front will give us players a lot to do while waiting  ;D

Well here we are two full months to the day after FH 2.2 came out. And I gotta say things are not too bad. There are about 200 players on servers in Europe right now. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this far after previous releases I think hslan would have been the only occupied server and there are three that are full or close to full as I type this.

In the States there seems to be at least one full or damn near full server every night. By now, after previous releases, we'd have been down to just "wolf FH2 Thursday's". But between TNT, WaW and Wolf, one seems to be occupied every night.

So while I was unimpressed with the initial numbers that normandy brought in(despite how incredibly impressed I am with 2.2), with the test of some time having passed, it seems demonstrably better at retaining players than any previous release.

One thing I really hope gets fixed in a new patch is your soldier yelling "ACHTUNG!...GRANATA!"(or whatever the hell he says) every time before throwing a grenade. It's so stupid. It warns the enemy about an incoming nade as much as it does any friendlies in the vicinity. And I find as a friendly it usually doesn't help anyway. I typically just hear the yell but I don't see who's throwing it or where it's being thrown, so I'm just as likely to end up running toward where he threw it to "take cover". It really ONLY serves as a warning to the enemy you're trying to kill with the thing.

Sad thing is, normandy is the fourth release of FH2 and this automatic yell is still in, so I guess it won't be coming out unless people really get in an uproar against it. I mean...seriously...does ANYONE like this "feature"??

There are plenty of reasons why our numbers suffer

A.) Low Publicity
B.) Lack Of Interest in WW2
C.) Newer Games
D.) Consoles

the list goes on.

A) kind of true, but we're working on it. We don't consider FH2 normandy done, we hope to get more PR stuff done, and have a dev for this now.

Cool!  8)

Today marks three weeks that FH 2.2 has been out. This is the funnest mod....forget mod...this is the funnest GAME I've ever played(with the possible exception of FH1). But their don't seem to be many  others in North America who feel that way. Over the past three weeks there have typically been 2 occupied US servers(frequently three – especially toward the beginning of the release) at any one time during prime evening playing times. This doesn't seem like any more than we had within the first few weeks of the 2.15 release. And if this is where it's at NOW with the initial release excitement still not fully worn off, I can only assume that in another month or so it will be back to just the occasional WaW Saturday campaign and Wolf FH2 Thursdays again; like the past several months with 2.15.

What happened? I thought Normandy was supposed to bring in droves of US players because the US army was FINALLY in the game. I know the mod had unfortunate release timing(just as the younger crowd were going back to school), but that doesn't seem to have upset the player numbers in Europe(I'm assuming school in Europe starts approximately around the same time as in the States?).

So what is it? Are we Americans just not as into mods? Do we change video games more quickly and so fewer Americans even have BF2 anymore? Do our students get more homework then European students so they just don't have time for this? Are we too fat and lazy to download a couple gigabytes of code that transforms BF2 into something wonderful?

I'm happy for you folks in Europe but I was really hoping Normandy would be a turning point for a permanent sustained US player base for this mod. But I can only assume that over time(as has happened with EVERY release) some players will drift off. It just doesn't seem all that likely that in 1-2 months there will still be 2-3 occupied US public FH2 servers each night if that's all there is now.

I know this is in NO WAY the devs fault. They produced an AWESOME mod and all people have to do to enjoy it is download and install it(hell, they even started a north american server...that rahn's whatever server, right after release). I guess I believed in all the pre-normandy hype on this forum and what it would do for the player base(particularly the US playerbase) and so I am kind of disappointed. I'm sure I'll still be able to catch games here and there over time; it's just unfortunate that such a well made and fun mod is not being enjoyed by more over on this side of the Atlantic.

In FH1 I LOVE Berlin Streets but even when I see it coming up on rotation on PFC or TDP it more often than not gets changed to something else at the last minute(I'm guessing this is because many others do not like it). Sometimes I'll only be sticking on the current map because I see that coming up...only to have it get taken away >:(  (makes me miss the days when wolf had an occupied FH1 server. The admins did not willy-nilly change the nextmap. If you typed !nextmap at the beginning of a map, you pretty well knew that WOULD BE the next map).

In FH2 I would have to say one map I really like but others seem to hate(atleast whenever I see forum posts asking for people to vote for maps they like and it comes in near the bottom) is Mersa Matruh. I have always liked this map but it certainly does not seem to be a popular one. It seems to give plenty for both tanks and infantry to do. I Love fighting between those top three flags as infantry.

There's a couple maps in FH2 that make me want to disconnect when they come up so I guess that means I 'hate' them and those would be Alam Halfa and aberdeen. But I think most others hate those too, so they're not good examples of one's i hate but others love for the 'vice versa' part of this post ;D

General Discussion / Re: Point Du Hoc Counter Attack?
« on: 16-09-2009, 23:09:11 »
Another problem is the allied weapon superiority. On the 64p Version it was finde, because the allied needed those semi-automatic weapons in order to advance. But when they have to defend its easy for them to just pin down the germans with their weapons.
Maybe feature it as an counterattack of better equiped german troops (like on PHL) after the garnision (the germans in the 64p version) was defeted. That could do a lot of improvement.
Yeah This ^^

When I'm german I do not look forward to using my bolt action k98 against an american armed with a semi-auto M-1 Garand. And don't even get me started with mp40 vs. BAR. The Americans need their superior weapons to advance on this map(in the 64 version); but it's almost impossible for germans to advance when the allies start out with all the flags.

Fall of Tobruk (Still EPIC, no matter what 'other' front has been released)
Tunis (Different now so good idea to give it a try)
Giarabub (country variety; aussies vs. italians - And fun as hell)
Mersa Matruh (I've always liked this one)

There was definitely a lot of work put into the mod, and it really shows- it's both beautiful and fun to play.
Thanks for this excellent mod.  :)
^^Agreed 100%^^

General Discussion / Re: Whats ur little review of FH2 2.2?
« on: 06-09-2009, 16:09:26 »
The biggest gameplay thing I noticed in 2.2 over 2.15(aside from beautiful 3D ironsights!) is how completely redone and SMOOTH the "collision meshes"(I believe that's what they're called) are now. What I mean; when you come to a break in a fence, wall or hedgerow where there is only a 6-8 inch high part you can get over, your player just walks/runs over it now. You don't have to nuke a third of your stamina "jumping" over it like I always had to in earlier releases. I think this was worked on to some extent in 2.15 but it still seems noticeably better now than in that previous release. So a BIG bravo to these MUCH SMOOTHER collision meshes in these new maps.

The ironsights are definitely a thing of beauty and bravo for them as well. Also the vegetation is so much better in FH2 than in BF2. Some may not consider that a big thing but it does help with immersion. The trees on maps like Lebisey are just so awesome looking. And speaking of awesome looking....my god...those stone houses and that stone cafe at last couple flags on Purple Heart Lane...wow...just wow. Also the smaller details on each map. A stone fountain on goodwood I believe(and other maps as well)...cabbages growing in back yard of house on goodwood...endless little details that add up to a majorly big awesomeness. When you go through these maps you definitely begin to see WHY this release took as long as it did.

As for the maps, so far I can't say I really dislike any of them. And considering there's 7 of them, that's a lot of new maps to enjoy! Overall GREAT job devs!! ;D
