It is a training film designed to train soldiers in the use of the Boys rifle true comedy (like the tigerfibel for the Germans). It was part of there official training for use of the Rifle. IIRC.

OK, so while we must all comply with euro nanny state enforced thought control (and I know the mods can't do anything about that), I've noticed that all the propaganda posted here has been for domestic consumption. What about propaganda intended for the enemy?

Here's one:

Leaflet dropped over 33 Japanese cities (including Hiroshima) on August 1, 1945. On the back it reads:

Quote
Read this carefully as it may save your life or the life of a relative or friend. In the next few days, some or all of the cities named on the reverse side will be destroyed by American bombs. These cities contain military installations and workshops or factories which produce military goods. We are determined to destroy all of the tools of the military clique which they are using to prolong this useless war. But, unfortunately, bombs have no eyes. So, in accordance with America's humanitarian policies, the American Air Force, which does not wish to injure innocent people, now gives you warning to evacuate the cities named and save your lives. America is not fighting the Japanese people but is fighting the military clique which has enslaved the Japanese people. The peace which America will bring will free the people from the oppression of the military clique and mean the emergence of a new and better Japan. You can restore peace by demanding new and good leaders who will end the war. We cannot promise that only these cities will be among those attacked but some or all of them will be, so heed this warning and evacuate these cities immediately.

One effect of these leaflets was to cause Japanese workers to flee many of the cities where the leaflets were dropped. Even though not all the cities where leaflets were dropped were bombed (to avoid completely tipping off the Japanese defenders), production was shut down in them due to people leaving who were afraid their city was going to be next.

Good idea Megaraptor.

Here is one of my favourite propaganda posters of all time, intended for the multinational Allied forces at Monte Cassino.  These German posters were actually rather effective given the awful state of Allied morale and organization at that battle.
Some of the bottom is cut off, it reads: The mountains and valleys of sunny Italy want to see you!"  referencing how each fortified mountaintop would just continue bleeding the Allies out.

"WHITE DEATH - You can't see this enemy, but it surrounds you everywhere"

Finnish leaflet used during the winter war. Simple design with large picture and short fitting text. It had to be simple and clear so the message would be delivered even if one just sees it briefly on ground.. since if you picked it up and read it a man with a blue band in his hat shot you...

Thats just asking for it, Mega. Europe has had enough of Nazi's, this is Germany's way to deal with it, maybe not perfect but it does it's job. Nothing to do with Euro as swatsika's are legal in for example the Netherlands. On certai places they are, websites mostly want them removed.

OK, so while we must all comply with euro nanny state enforced thought control.

In this day and age, a government must have a very low regard for its people if it can't trust the majority of them to not suddenly become Nazis just because they saw some historical posters on the internet.

It's not the 1950s anymore, there's no need to fear a Nazi resurgence in Germany.

And one final point: censorship is just counterproductive. Think about it. What happened when you were a kid and someone told you "don't read that book" or "don't look at those pictures." What did you immediately want to do? Look at whatever it was to see what all the fuss was about. After all, there must be something interesting there if people are telling you not to look at it. So I think this sort of censorship just serves to make some people more interested in neo-nazism, holocaust denial, etc. People who otherwise wouldn't be interested.

And to not completely derail this thread, here's another poster, from Iraq in 2003:

Text reads:

Quote
The patriotism of one Iraqi man won him 30 million US dollars.

These two men are no longer a threat to you or your families, thanks to the loyalty of one man to his country. That man provided us with information about the location of Oday and Qusay Saddam Hussein.

Your patriotism may win you 25 million US dollars. With information that will lead us to Saddam Hussein el-Tikriti, you will protect the future of your country and you will be awarded up to 25 million US dollars.

Phone your local police or the Coalition forces at: [contact info]

Also here's a famous one from the 1991 Gulf War:

This one is a safe-conduct pass. According to the back of the leaflet, presenting this pass when surrendering would guarantee the bearer humane treatment. Of course, they would get humane treatment with or without the pass, but that's the brilliance of it - it subtly encouraged surrender in a way much more persuasive than "just give up now you're gonna die." Also note how the leaflet depicts Saudi soldiers instead of Americans. Apparently these leaflets were so effective that Iraqi officers and secret police were raiding their men's quarters searching for the leaflets because the men were hoarding them while waiting for the ground war to start.

And one final leaflet, from Grenada 1983 (meant for Cuban troops in Grenada):

Translation: "This...or This."

Back reads: "Your defeat is inevitable. You are facing thousands of troops from six different countries. Cease resistance and return to Cuba with honor where your family await you."

I don't say I approve it or think it's effective but thats how Germany deals with it, the reason why I reacted was 'Euro nanny state'. It's just Germany and probably a few others, most allow it.

Look, guys.. this could be a very great thread comparable to picture of the day... But I need you to remove all the ones with swatstikas on it, no matter how small, allied or axis, doesn't matter... As long as that thing is on it, Lightning or Flippy will torpedo this thread and we wont be able to resurrect it or recreate it....

so please, screw the 'aaaw, censorship' whine and do the right thing. Its Germany after all. It will be ironic and daft if you are posting WW2 propaganda and don't get why they have an issue with that symbol today

I see a good numbeer of swatsikas on page 1...

"Ausgenommen hiervon sind Handlungen der staatsbürgerlichen Aufklärung, der Abwehr verfassungswidriger Bestrebungen, der Kunst oder der Wissenschaft, der Forschung oder der Lehre, der Berichterstattung über Vorgänge des Zeitgeschehens oder der Geschichte oder ähnlicher Zwecke (Abs. 3 i. V. m. § 86 Abs. 3 StGB)."

Roughly translated this means that it´s alright to use forbidden symbols like Swastikas, SS-runes etc. in an educative, historical  or illsutrative context. If this paragraph wouldn´t exist historical movies and photos would be forbidden here, which they clearly aren´t. Propaganda posters are clearly a case of historical context as long as the person who posts them doesn´t use them as propaganda.
Sorry for OT ;)

I won't rip this site off by stealing images, and I must warn you there is pro-German/Nazi symbolism in some of the posters, but then the site is a collection of all WW2 propoganda posters not a political statement.  You'll find a lot of 50's pulp posters on there too.

We should have like a little contest out of all of these here for a favourite propaganda poster.  Maybe just the ones already up here so we're not swamped, but some people each could nominate one of these as their favourite, then everybody votes?

OT but notice how Disney have reused the animatins from their movie Ferdinand the Bull when Hitler starts to cry (at 2:34).
Didn't someone post a link to a clip where they showed how much Disney have reused over the years in the found-on-the-Internet-thread?

OnT:
This is a classic Swedish propaganda poster:
The text means A Swedish Tiger but it can also mean that a Swede doesn't speak so the enemy gets information.

Well, as I understand it, it takes time to develop unique characters so in the instance they are tight on budget, they need to reuse. More often with secondary characters eg. Animals, crocodiles especially

But, in the case of Robin Hood, due to a highly limited budget. Little John was a dressed version of Balu from Junglebook, and the King was from Bedknobs and Broomsticks, the live-action/animation with Angela ?Lansbry

I can imagine a propaganda video would be socondary to them - Still, its interesting to see the quality of Walt Disney animation especially the way the characters, here Hitler, moved. I kind of wince that Walt Disney and Hitler ever had anything to do with one another though... even if it was propaganda directed against the latter... But then again, even impartial BBC was used for that as well

^ As much as many people will call that sort of thing racist now, mass rape by the Japanese military happened in a lot of places in the Pacific War, so it's really not a stretch to say the same thing would have happened in Hawaii/California/Australia if the Japanese had landed there.

The population in the us would be much better armed then the country's invaded before by the japanese, if they would start mass rape i think whole armies would just die in the citys when like everyone comes out with there gun and shoots the SOB's.

Invading the us, a country with so many firearms would be extremely hard since a lot of civilians would resist. The resistance movements of europe would be nothing compared to those of the us.

(i am going by the assumption the there is at least 1 weapon in every household in the us on average)

Well, not sure what the ratio was in the 1940s.

But today, on average the US has 90 guns for every 100 people: Source (http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSL2834893820070828)

However...

Most US households that own guns own more than one. The percentage of the US population that owns guns is somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2.

Falls down laughing. Oh man. No, not everyone in America has a gun. In fact a higher percentage of Canadians own firearms than do Americans if I'm not mistaken.

However in the 1940s I would imagine 1/4 or perhaps 1/3 homes had a usable firearm in it. Rural areas naturally increase this ratio. But by this time the prohibition crime era was over so the need for having a gun in an urban or suburban environment was less present.

PS
90 guns per 100 people means nothing. People in the US like hording guns. So if a person owns one gun, they probably own at least one or two more, like Warrior said.

Even if all the yankees had guns, would they be able to substantially resist?  Guns don't blow up trains or communications, and generally rising up in rebellion without heavy equipment leads to death (a la Vercors plateau.)

Exactly.  I have 6 rifles and 2 pistols.  My neighbors to the left prob have a couple, and I know of one other house that has guns, and he was a PBM pilot in WW2.  Other then that, I have high doubt that anyone else on my street has guns.

People are also not taking into account that many of us have access to firecrackers and ways to make homemade explosives. Thermite is made of aluminum powder and rust and it can burn through 1 - 1 1/2 inches of steel. Even more depending on the amount. You can easily get things like that in your household too

You don't need to start out with explosives. A few ambushes here and there after a trip to your nearest sporting good store, and you should have a truckload of stuff that you can use.

What we're really missing here is that Japan didn't have the manpower to invade the United States, and even if they did manage to land on the West Coast they didn't have the mechanization to advance far inland.

What Japan really wanted to do was seize Hawaii, the Aleutians, Australia, Fiji and New Caledonia, and then force the Americans to sue for peace (since there's nothing between Hawaii and the US, and launching an attack to re-take Hawaii across the open ocean would have been quite a challenge). Then, they hoped to apply the resources of all the places they conquered to their war in China.

You cut off my sentence. It ended with "if I am not mistaken". Something I put in all sentences that have information that I am not completely clear on. Bringing profanity and insult into this discussion seems like it would be a very counter-productive thing to do.

So, perhaps you could correct my "mistaken" comment in a civilized manner in the future instead of just looking for someone to bash?

You're right, Canadians are the same thing as Americans.

BRB going to go jail people of foreign decent, tell the authorities about the gay people sodomizing next door so that they can be prosecuted for breaking the law, not smoke marijuana, argue with right wing nut jobs, fix Canada due to its bankruptcy, read some books about Canadas history of serious race/hate crimes and civil rights crimes AND continue to be seriously overweight and uneducated, become part of Canadas FAMOUS "melting pot" and NOT in any way like a multicultural country.

Canada and the U.S are so fundamentally different in every aspect. Name an aspect that is the exact same... please... i'm face palming right now.

Not that different as you think... Sorry but I'm a Québécois and my uncle an American and he's not that different. The canadian have two culture (british and USA) We, Québécois have 3 culture (US, british and french) The Québécois are different from the US, but not that much, in fact, the last 50 years we have become french american in a way. Canadian are north USA people...

1940's attacking us
1950-1970 Waiting for things to blow over

Doesn't their cars are all locally made and participate in the so-red-neck race called Nascar nowadays?

Surely our Toyota here have different brake pads and mats than yours. And since the press reported EVERY "panicked" Toyota-related accidents (including careless or inept driver that has nothing-to-do with brake defects problem)... then you got the fantastic number of deaths.

No, because it's true. We force men and women to kill each other just so people don't have to drive "little, gay Hotweels". The reasons I have heard for driving an SUV are disgusting considering what is needed to supply them. Anything the average consumer uses an SUV for can be done by a station wagon or even a hatchback. I know several people in the Marines right now. If one of them were to be killed in the sandbox for some stupid soccer mom to drive her kids to school and pick up groceries in her urban assault vehicle...I don't know what I would do. I don't think I could carry on a civilized conversation with that person.

Yeah, its really not as it seems. Besides, I go in places where no retared station wagon or hatchback would ever go. I'll stick to my SUV, I need the room and mobility that can't be provided by those "things" you mentioned. I'm tired of people trying to pitch the war in Iraq on Oil, it's really nonsense.

Then why are the Americans going to Iraq instead of Iran or North Korea for example? Seriously speaking, OIL is ONE of the REASONS why they go to Iraq, i find the "WMD" reason is stupid beyond belief. Not even their Scud 2 can threaten UK. Just wait for the leaks, i am pretty sure the "WMD" findings aren't that significant. You can only find toxic gas factories, thousands of bio hazard-labeled arty shells, most are leftovers from their war with Iran. Even letters from war-mongering active duty grunts confirm the findings (thus nullifying hippies' rant about "no WMD in Iraq", because there are indeed some). But wasn't it the kind of ICBM that could have reached D.C. or London under 45 minutes?

If you are saying, it is not WMD nor Oil... but national security & well-being of Iraqi people. Well what can you say? Overthrowing a secular (good for security) tyranny (bad for Iraqi people) regime? The only wrong thing about Saddam Hussein, is that he is unfriendly to US, period.

I own a SUV myself, with diesel engine, it takes 1 litre to go 8 km (1 US gallon = 3.82 litre, 1 miles = 1.62 km). Honestly saying, it is really isn't as gas-greedy as most people perceived it to be.

It's saying Democracy is Democracy no matter who is voted into power, as long as they are voted in the Democratic way... be it Ghandi or Joseph Stalin types.

Ergo democracy is bullshit because people are stupid.

Have you tried driving a station wagon "off road", it handles pretty well? A good Volvo will do just as well for what MOST people use their SUVs for. I'm talking about people who never leave the city and might as well drive a mini van for what they use it for.

As for any war in Iraq being about oil, I saw an interview with George H.W. Bush about the Gulf War. When asked if the war was about oil he said, and I quote "Of course the war was about oil" explaining that we needed the stability in that market to maintain our economy or something to that effect.

For that...

Thomas Jefferson proposed that every American must be educated. Thus he set up the University of Pennsylvania and that West Point Academy. He kinda said that smart people wouldn't accidentally elect tyrannical government. But at this point, i'm still thinking that the Greeks (mentioned in the cartoon) was said to be "the brightest in Europe" by some western supremacist historian probably, but why would they chose to kill Socrates? Not to mention the Germans...

You know what beats intelligence.

Case and Point. We need a new, untested form of Government.

Invading Iraq for oil would be pointless, and that is their #1 money making export, and pretty much their only way. Therefore, if they don't want a total economic collapse...they would have to sell oil to foreign nations. Going into Iraq would only cost more and result in more loss oil than it would be to just buy the oil. Even if we go into Iraq and set up a democracy, that oil still isn't ours! We arn't conquering or colonizing Iraq, so that oil isn't ours and there is no benefiit for us (oil-wise)! So why would we go for just the oil? Bush wasn't a complete idiot.

Iraq did have WMD (we even supplied some to Saddam) and biological weapon which he was using against his own people, and at the time, Iran didn't poses a threat of nuclear weapons. Maybe we didn't find anything as dramatic as people thought they were talking about, and they probably couldn't reach Washington or New York, however... it did put some of our allies at risk, a big one being Israel.

Which brings me my next reason of not leaving Iraq and not invading Iran. if we leave Iraq, we leave a straight route for Iran to march straight into Israel. Besides, after the Iraq WMD episode and the economic crisis, they know they could never get American to buy into another war, especially if they use the same cause: WMD's. It's like the story "Don't Cry Wolf". Whether it's serious or not, the cry is old and the people will ignore it, the only way we will engage into war with Iran now is if they strike us [in which the U.S. people will B*tch because we didn't do anything ahead of time when we knew what was up], or if Israel makes a strike first and we back them up. Although I doubt Obama has any intention of helping the Jews, like a true Muslim.

Do you really think maintaining freedom is cheap?

American soldiers are amongst the most consumerist in the world, even your planes are bringing bottled waters for them (if you think about it, aviation fuel (around 0.8 kg/l) = water (1 kg/l)). Will the tax payers, i mean big tax payers, rich people like you, the corporates, the famous families (not celebrities) be satisfied with just that? "We finally secured another safe tourist destination" for your winter escape fellow yanks! "Those marvels you see at 1001 nights and Disney movies are right in front your eyes by booking American Airlines or El Al trip to another freedom land."

Well, just in case. US liberated us from the commies 60 years ago. They got several free oil drilling rights and mining rights for US-based companies, (companies outside US that drills here is only Shell, there is no BP plant here) like this:

You know this one.
This is ExxonMobil gas plant in Aceh.

Don't you think it is nice? Happen if we fell into commies hands, you cannot mine anything, or get our gas, copper, gold, or even oil.

Good thing is, there is not much weapon factory here. So our economy aren't that dependent on weapon making income, thus we fought less war.

A democracy is not a democracy without a constitution. A constitution that says people cannot be punished without a fair trail, a constitution which says no one man can have all the power, a constitution which says no man can be treated differently solely because of his race, a consitution which says men and women must be treated as equals and a constitution which says church and state must be seperate.

None of the examples in the cartoon is a democracy.

Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force!

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have
striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The
hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on
other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war
machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of
Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well
equipped and battle hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of
1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats,
in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their
strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home
Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions
of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men.
The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to
Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage and devotion to duty and skill in
battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!

Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great
and noble undertaking.

                                            SIGNED: Dwight D. Eisenhower

That there can't be any swastikas in this thread while there are a mountain of them in the 'picture of the day' threads.

That´s what I tried to say at the start of this thread. As long as the "forbidden symbols" are used in a "historical and educative manner" it´s alright to post them. So, if noone tries to use old Nazi propaganda posters to gain support for his Nazi views it´s alright to use them.         ATTENTION!

Paratroopers, this pertains to you. For some time forged currency has circulated at the front and in the homeland. You are expressly warned against accepting or passing this currency.

        BIG REWARD!

Who are the forgers? Where is their workshop? How do you recognize forged money? What will your reward be?

The head of the forgery gang is Josef Stalin, born 21.12.1879 in Tiflis/Kaukasus. Religion: Godless. Special characteristics: Unquenchable thirst for blood.

His accomplice is Franklin D. Roosevelt, born 30.1.1882 in New York. Religion: Freemason. Profession: Fireplace speaker. Residing: Hyde Park, New York. Special characteristics: Poor knowledge of geography.

Both are assisted by Winston Churchill, born 30.11.1874 in Canterbury. Religion: Puritan. Profession: Warmonger. Residence: Downing Street, London. Special characteristics: Alcoholic.

The political forged money workshop is located in the Reuter News Agency in London, with branches in all the Jewish poison kitchens of the world. The characteristics of the forged currency are short-lived paper bills with deceptive promises to blind and dazzle simpletons or with exaggerated announcements and threats to scare timid hearts.

Do not let yourself become confused!

They are all lies which are whispered into your ear by the enemy. Remember well: the truth comes from Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler fights for freedom, bread and work. The forged money comes from the enemy. Stalin, Churchill, Roosevelt and their stooges bring us poverty and death.

Keep faith with the fuhrer! Adolf Hitler is the guarantor of your future.

        YOUR REWARD IS VICTORY.

I just quoted the current law on this issue in Germany. IMO it has flaws and isn´t really helpfull, but since this is a German board we have to stick to these rules, wether we like it or not.
