Developer Blogs / Re: How to make an Eastern Front map

Undergrowth is an extension of texture, NOT an object. Do not place thick undergrowth to hide players like they are Velociraptors in Jurassic Park.

I laughed so hard I almost peed myself when I read that line.  Great tutorial on mapping.  I'm looking forward to playing it.

Right - my wife to be wants to play FH2 with me.

With the latest changes, is it still possible to go gaming together?  8)

Wow, that's great.  Does she have a sister - Preferably one who is a physician, successful stock broker, or has family money?

I found this on line.  I remember a similar key generator for BF1942 that I used once to fix an issue with my nephew's installation.

Good luck.

Yo gomer!

The problems lie within fh2.47. Gamespy apparantly killed a few more services yesterday which causes this. We will make a public patch to fix this ASAP.

You da Man, Stubbfan!   ;D

Thanks Buddy.

Restore point didn't do squat.  However, the first time I fired up FH2 it showed a warning about video settings.  I'll research this.

Edit:  I don't think that this is it.  I finally tried using default player profile and was able to run the game in single player mode w/o any difficulty whatsoever.  When I tried selecting one of my profiles, the teddy bear appeared and spun.  "Connecting to Server" was displayed.  Never would connect.  Killed process using Task manager.

Profiles in ..\My documents\bf2\profiles are:
pvtgmerpyleusmc2
pvtgmrpyleusmc
[OSF]pvtgmerpyleusmc

Also, under ..\My Documents\BF2\mods there are no FH2 or PR folders.  Shouldn't a FH2\mods subdiretory exist below this one?  I do see both pr and fh2 under c:\program files (x86)\ea games\battlefield 2\mods.

Is there a work around like adding an entry to hosts file for FH2 so that it will properly connect to the server?

Thanks for any assistance you can give.

Hey Stubby   ;D

I modified my hosts file tonight so that I could play BF1942.  I ran into this problem the other day with BF2 revive, decided "to heck with it" and did what the professor did (went back to a restore point).

Without thinking I launched FH2 w/o first commenting out the line in the hosts file.  Now I get a black screen, unresponsive process, and have to kill the task.

I commented out the entry in hosts and then retried.  Same thing.  Debating on doing another restore back to this past Thursday.  Probably will.

Questions
(1) if all I changed was an entry in the hosts file, then why did it jack up FH2 so that it will no longer work?
(2) if changing the entry in the hosts file changes an entry in a settings file for FH2, then I should be able to edit this and replace the entry with the proper one for the FH2 servers.  I should also be able to create a back up of this so that, like the shader problem of old, I can replace the corrupted one with a good one.

Thanks.

I think I found the answer myself, but I wanted to post it here for others to view.  Apparently this is a result of a false positive (see web link).  Trojan Generic!Artemis basically means that McAfee found something suspicious, flagged it as a trojan, and assigned the name of it's new threat technology, Artemis.

Therefore, if you're using McAfee as your virus protection software, you'd be well advised to exclude C:\EA Games\Battlefield 2 and it's associated sub folders from any "full" scan that you do as well as your FH2 install files.

Last night I ran a virus scan on my machine using McAfee, and it flagged FH2_Toolbox.exe and the 2nd part of the downloaded install executable that was part of the Forgotten_Hope2_v2.2.zip file as containing Trojan Generic!Artemis.

McAfee also removed a registry entry for FH2.

I downloaded the 2.2 update using mu Torrent shortly after it's release.

Questions:

(1)  Has anyone else seen this with McAfee or some other virus protection like Avast or Trend?

(2)  Is this an erroneous recognition on the part of McAfee, much like one that would previously occur with an older version of AVG where it would quarantine - I think it was the game spy browser portion - of the original BF1942 and make it unplayable.

(3)  Is this an actual Trojan infection that has been noted by others here, and if so, where can I find a clean copy of the FH2.2 client?  My gut feeling after having researched Generic!Artemis is that it's a browser hijacker and I've experienced none of this.  That said, it's possible that it was deployed in such a way as part of it's payload may not have installed and worked as it should've.

Thanks guys.  I really appreciate the assistance.

I played this last night for the first time and had a blast.  You guys did a great job with the 2.2 release IMO.   ;)

BTW, nice sig Slayer.

Want some cheese?

Ouch, nice middle school come back.  I applaud you.   ;)

Look.  I'm not whining and crying about it.  I'm not a regular poster here in your forums.  Matter of fact, I don't think I've even checked them before more than once or twice perhaps for technical information.

I just wanted to express my opinion and to basically state the obvious, which is that hardly no one is even playing FH2 anymore.  That's all.

LIGHTNING will say they can release at June 6th of next year if you like it. ;D

They can wait as long as they like.  However, only the beta testers and devs will be playing it on their development server.  The original game (BF2) was released in 2005.  Except for die hard fans, the window on attracting interest wanes with each passing day.

All one has to do is to fire up the game and hunt for a populated server.  Typically you'll only find one that has anybody playing, and lately even these aren't filled.

This doesn't bode well for the mod, IMHO.

And paid to do it or not, without milestone dates and a project schedule of sorts it, project creep slips in.  What should've taken six or eight months with folks working a few hours a week slows and takes over a year.

Answer this for me (and I know that someone here can), how many maps, armies, weapons, etc were released for FH1 in the same time period?  I have to admit, I started playing FH1 late after interest in DC .07 waned.  However, I soon began really enjoying this mod because there were so many battles in the rotation in all theaters of the war.

Here we are four years after the release of BF2 and two and a half years after the release of 2.0, and we're still wandering around the deserts of North Africa.

So tell me why are project schedules such a bad thing?

I have to admit that I was very disappointed that 2.2 wasn't released for the D-Day anniversary.   :(
