Longues Sur Mer, custom map
« on: 01-08-2010, 09:08:20 »
Hi,

Here is the start of a new project: Longues Sur Mer, status WIP

"Situated west of Arromanches-les-Bains in Normandy, Longues-sur-Mer overlooked the ocean from the top of a 65 meters height cliff, a perfect position where the Germans had installed a four 150 mm guns battery. On 6 June 1944, at 5:30 am several allied battle ships opened fire on the battery. When the Allied Armada was on sight, the German heavy guns striked back. The HMS Ajax concentrated his fire on the German battery at one kilometre range. The battery stopped bombing a short time, but fire started again and the position shelled the Landing ships until 5 pm.The battery surrendered to the British troops the next day with the 184 men garrison."

If you are willing to receive some constructive criticism, your log ramps are facing the wrong direction. Their purpose was to tip over the landing crafts, not to poke holes into them. ;)

Woh this map is an assault nightmare. Hope there won't be MG mounts on the bunker windows. PwnzrRape
But I like maps like that cause only teamwork can get you through such demanding terrain. Smoke + flanking and fire support = Win (dows 7)

Well yes and no, iirc, they also had ones with mines on them that stood as they do in that first picture.

I have heard about mines being placed on the ramp but the log would still stand the tall end towards shore. There were also mines placed on a single log facing the sea.

My book WN62 from Hein Severloh says the same.
Those wooden ramps were always built to serve as ramps and were fitted with crude saws or mines.
Only the simple logs with mines on top were faced outwards.

Otherwise a nice map idea. I enjoyed the FH1 beach rushing a lot :)
But judging from the (bad quality) screenshots, there needs to be more rubble next to the destroyed buildings. Most likely most of the bombing damage happend just one day before.

Well I just checked the area in Google Earth and i´m amazed by the details. They even have the bunkers and guns as 3D Buildings. Together with the Pics from Panoramio you can check the smallest Details and the big picture for correct scales.
Speaking of this, I think your beach is too wide compared to the real thing as its a small flat beach and a long slope in google earth. Also the second bunker row is 300 meters behind the bunker at the beach ridge. In your screens they seem to be much closer together.

How about the naval shelling, do you have plans for this? Would be nice to see a ship out there if the HMS Ajax was only 1 km away.

Both google earth and this map portray the beach-width 100% right.

There is a certain stone ball orbiting us, called the moon. This object causes some gravitational pull that oddly has the effect of making a slight egg-shape of stuff on earth, especially liquids such as the sea.

This phenomenon popularly is called 'tide'. Hence the beaches can be either small (high tide) or very broad (low tide).

I was at Omaha beach & surroundings for a few days and saw the beach shrink and grow from 15 meters to 100 meters sometimes.

Concerning the beach on Omaha. Some parts where, even with low tides, no more then 50 meters wide. But  others are, with low tide, over 3km wide. Yes, the speed the water comes in there is faster then you can run since the beaches are almost completely flat. Get a proper map and it shows the difference between high and low tides.

Don't have too many open houses, just makes the map maze like and diminishes action
