Book Recommendations? (Eastern Front)
« on: 09-04-2014, 02:04:01 »
Got a birthday coming up and my parents have asked me if there's any books I'd like. The last two years I've got Tank Men and The War of Art, which I can't recommend strongly enough to anyone reading this. But I'd be interested to know if any of you have come across some good works lately, specifically on armor or infantry battles on the Eastern Front in WW2. I've already got Blood Red Snow on the short list, which I've heard good things about. Anyone got anything they'd like to share?

A good read would be Berlin: The Downfall 1945 by Antony Beevor, if you haven't already.

Anything by him is worth a read.

Yeah, I can't wait for his next book.

For the OP: try to find Stalingrad from Beevor too.

I've been disappointed by Beevor's books, I bought his Berlin book and found it quite boring.
He talks too much of the whole army groups, and not enough of the grunts on the ground.

On the other hand I have bough a book written by August von Kageneck talking about the war in the eastern front, but I can only find it in french.

von Kageneck's account is also used as the basis for documentary series "Apocalypse: The Second World War."

His unit advanced past Stalingrad and continued through the Caucasus mountains, exchanging fires in Iranian borders. It must be pretty interesting to read the details. Not much information about those fights there, since everybody always talk about Stalingrad.

You think so?  It's an operational history, it wouldn't be much use if he didn't talk about battle groups, now would it?  But he uses tonnes of anecdotal stories, and especially in Berlin, were he puts a lot of focus on the rapes committed by the Red Army.

Christie.Front.Drive I know you prefer eastern theater book but, you should try the Seconde world War by Beevor. I read it last year, after 15 years of learning stuff about WW2 and when I was reading it, I had the feeling that I know nothing about ww2.

I don't know if he has any eastern front books, but I've read D-Day and Citizen Soldiers by Stephen Ambrose and like both of them very much.

an eastern front classic is certainly Vasily Grossman:

Of course it contains part of subjectivity, but overall its perspective is interresting
