Off-Topic / Boy Banned from US After Drunk-emailing Obama
« on: 19-09-2010, 00:09:25 »
Drunk dialing, tipsy texting and inebriated emailing -- all things that many people would agree are a very bad idea. Especially one teenager in Britain who has been banned from America for life after emailing the president while polluted.

College student Luke Angel has been banned from visiting the United States for life after he drunkenly emailed President Barack Obama. Angel had just watched a TV program about 9/11 and decided it would be a good idea to send Obama an abusive email. Turns out calling the U.S. president a 'pr**k' is not the best way to make friends in the FBI.

Sky News reports that the FBI intercepted the message and notified British police, who in turn contacted the local police force in the youth's town of Silsoe, Bedfordshire. A Bedfordshire Police spokesman told Sky: "The individual sent an email to the White House full of abusive and threatening language.

"We were informed by the Metropolitan Police and went to see him. He said, 'Oh dear, it was me'."

When asked about the ban, Luke responded, "I don't really care. My parents aren't very happy about it. The police who came round took my picture and told me I was banned from America forever."

The Department of Homeland Security says there are about 60 reasons one can be banned from the U.S. but said it can't discuss specific cases.

'Daily Show' host Jon Stewart announced Thursday that he'll lead a rally on Washington that aims to encourage angry citizens on both sides of the aisle to take it down a notch, or in his words, "stop shouting, throwing and drawing Hitler mustaches on people other than Hitler."

The event has been dubbed the "Rally to Restore Sanity" and will be held on the National Mall on Oct. 30. "It's real," he told his maybe-thinking-he-was-joking audience. "We are gonna do this."

In a video setting up his case that both political parties have gone overboard, Stewart mixed in pundits like "Birther Queen" Orly Taitz and the "Ragin' Cajun" James Carville. There were images from anti-war rallies and the recent rash of Tea Party events as well. He said the purpose of the rally will be to give the 80 percent of the country who usually "have s**t to do" a chance to rally ... but for sanity, not rage.

In contrast with Glenn Beck's recent religious-y rally on Washington, where signs were openly discouraged, the Comedy Central funnyman urges marchers to go to town. He suggested a couple ideas, including "I Disagree With You, But I'm Pretty Sure You're Not Hitler," and "Take It Down a Notch, America."

The rally, which he also dubbed the "Million Moderate March," will lean heavy on comedy, of course. Stewart's "rival," Stephen Colbert, bum-rushed the show to announce that he too would hold his own rally nearby for "all freedom-loving patriots" to challenge the "dark, optimistic forces" of Stewart and the 'Daily Show.'

He later said on the 'Colbert Report' that in order to "fight Jon Stewart's creeping reasonableness" and "restore truthiness" he will lead the "March to Keep Fear Alive" in the same exact spot on the same day as his Comedy Central colleague.

In a statement, Comedy Central promised a face-off between Stewart and Colbert that will be "bigger than Nixon/Kennedy, Ali/Foreman, Aniston/Jolie, 50/Nas, Joe/the Volcano, Alien/Predator, Bunny/Fudd and Ecks/Sever combined."

I really want to go.  Maybe that weekend I could spend some time Touring DC's Historical sites, mocking Fox news, etc.  But I think the hilight of this trip would be Jon's rally.  Hopefully I can make some time.

Off-Topic / For you new drivers:
« on: 08-09-2010, 22:09:13 »
As I was pulling into the high school I attend a white car pulled out in front of me, without slowing down or using his fucking blinkers.  I had to turn even harder than I was to avoid hitting the car.  I spun out, and had to walk a mile and a half back home.  My leg and my arm are nice juicy hamburger meat now.  I wasn't able to make out the license plate as I was on the ground and they sped away without stopping to help.

When I got home, I dumped my (now wrecked) bike back, washed it off so all the raw skin was exposed to the air, then I walked down to the elementary school to set up an appointment for a class field trip to the local history museum, frightened the little old secretaries, finished, walked back home, where I applied bandages and ointment.
It was a nice bike, a Huffy Arlington.

Now the seat is broken, the pedal's broken (if my foot was elsewhere, the pedal shaft would have punctured my leg), and I think the rims are bent.

So, in conclusion: Always use your motherfucking blinkers.  Thank you.

Off-Topic / Mosque to go up near New York's ground zero
« on: 13-07-2010, 19:07:20 »
New York (CNN) -- Plans to build a mosque two blocks away from ground zero have set off an emotional debate among area residents and relatives of victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
Cordoba House project calls for a 15-story community center including a mosque, performance art center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces.
The project is a collaboration between the American Society for Muslim Advancement and the Cordoba Initiative, both of which work to improve relations with followers of the religion.
The two groups presented their vision to part of the Community Board of lower Manhattan on Wednesday night.
Ro Sheffe, a board member who attended the meeting, said the project did not need to get the board's approval.
"They own the land, and their plans don't have any zoning changes," Sheffe said. "They came to us for our opinions and to let us know their plans. It was purely voluntary on their part."
The 12 members who were at the meeting voted unanimously to support the project. Community board members are appointed by the borough president and serve as advisers to the borough president and the mayor's office.
Daisy Khan, executive director of the Muslim society, described her vision of a center led by Muslims, but serving the community as a whole.
"It will have a real community feel, to celebrate the pluralism in the United States, as well as in the Islamic religion," Khan said. "It will also serve as a major platform for amplifying the silent voice of the majority of Muslims who have nothing to do with extremist ideologies. It will counter the extremist momentum."
The need for the center is twofold, Khan said, because it will support the needs of the growing Muslim community.
"The time for a center like this has come because Islam is an American religion," Khan said. "We need to take the 9/11 tragedy and turn it into something very positive."
Sheffe said a community center for lower Manhattan residents is "desperately needed." The area was mostly commercial, Sheffe said, but as more people move downtown, the lack of residential amenities is a problem.
The project got mixed reviews from families and friends of September 11 victims.
"I think it's the right thing to do," said Marvin Bethea, who was a paramedic at ground zero. "I lost 16 friends down there. But Muslims also got killed on 9/11. It would be a good sign of faith that we're not condemning all Muslims and that the Muslims who did this happened to be extremists. As a black man, I know what it's like to be discriminated against when you haven't done anything."
Herbert Ouida, whose son was killed in the attacks, supports the project as a way to bridge cultural divide.
"I understand the anger, the bitterness and hatred, but it only generates more hatred," Ouida said. "Such a large part of the world has this faith, and to say anyone who has this faith is a terrorist, it's terrible."
Others decried the idea of building a mosque so close to where their relatives died.
"Lower Manhattan should be made into a shrine for the people who died there," said Michael Valentin, a retired city detective who worked at ground zero. "It breaks my heart for the families who have to put up with this. I understand they're [building] it in a respectful way, but it just shouldn't be down there."
Others such as Barry Zelman said the site's location will be a painful reminder.
"[The 9/11 terrorists] did this in the name of Islam," Zelman said. "It's a sacred ground where these people died, where my brother was murdered, and to be in the shadows of that religion, it's just hypocritical and sacrilegious. "
However, Khan emphasized that the attacks killed Muslims, too.
"Three hundred of the victims were Muslim, that's 10 percent of the victims," she said. "We are Americans too. The 9/11 tragedy hurt everybody including the Muslim community. We are all in this together and together we have to fight against extremism and terrorism."
Cordoba House is still in its early stages of development. The American Society for Muslim Advancement is hoping to raise funds for the center to be completed in three to five years.

Really, I don't see the big deal.  Not every muslim is a crazy whitey-hating terrorist, just as not every white guy wants to bomb china (dey stole our jobs derpa derr).  I don't think it matters how close to ground zero it's being built, just as I don't think it would matter if a christian church went up in Afghanistan.

Off-Topic / The Stories Thread
« on: 29-05-2010, 05:05:57 »
There doesn't seem to be one of these, so I thought I would create a general 'story' page of experiences you all have had in life, and I thought I would start out with a bit of a serious one I told to Ivan a bit ago.

I visited Dachau a while back.  It was the most depressing and horrific place I have ever been.  And most of it has been torn down, only 3 or 4 buildings remain, but I could barely stand being in the camp... It felt so empty there, so cold.
I toured around a little bit until I couldn't stand it anymore and went into the visitor's centre and just huddled in the corner.  Apparently the clerks had seen this before, they didn't say anything, but I've never felt like that before, or since. But as I boarded the bus out, I swear I felt a sensation in my hand...like I was holding a candle.  My hand was the only warm part of my body.  And even now  Its really hard to think of that feeling and type. I never want to visit that place again.
Ever.
Never, I will never go there again.  But...visit Dachau if you ever get the chance.  I'm still feeling so bad even now, But I don't regret visiting.  I now have the memory of a feeling I will never feel in its strongest again, and It feels both horrible and, in a way, a bit good.

Off-Topic / Suicide Bombings in Moscow kill 38
« on: 29-03-2010, 21:03:15 »

Moscow, Russia (CNN) -- Russian investigators combing two subway stations attacked by female suicide bombers think Chechen rebels may have been behind the rush-hour strike that killed dozens of people.
"Our preliminary assessment is that this act of terror was committed by a terrorist group from the North Caucasus region," Alexander Bortnikov of the Federal Security Service said of the investigation at one of the blast sites.
"We consider this the most likely scenario, based on investigations conducted at the site of the blast," Bortnikov said. "Fragments of the suicide bombers' body found at the blast, according to preliminary findings, indicate that the bombers were from the North Caucasus region."
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said the "terrorists" responsible for the Moscow subway attacks Monday "will be destroyed."
"We are providing Moscow metro with additional CCTV cameras. Today's events show we should not only continue this work but to make it more effective. Changes in legislation may be necessary."
The two explosions that rocked the subway stations in central Moscow during rush hour killed at least 38 people and wounded more than 60 others, spawning widespread public outrage.
"It's disgusting," one witness said. "I don't know who did it and what they wanted. Life is so short. How could people commit such terrible acts?"
Although the they have yet to claim responsibility, Bortnikov's statement is a strong implication that Chechen rebels fighting for independence were behind the strike.
How Chechen rebels threaten Russian stability
Thousands have been killed and 500,000 Chechens displaced in the Chechen rebels' almost 20-year conflict with Moscow. The area is in the North Caucasus region of Russian between the Black and Caspian seas.

The first blast occurred at 7:56 a.m. at Lubyanka subway station, the Ministry of Emergency Situations reported on its Web site. The Lubyanka station is near the Kremlin and Federal Security Service headquarters. The Federal Security Service is Russia's intelligence agency.
Another blast happened about 40 minutes later at Park Kultury station, on the same train line. Three Moscow hospitals were treating the wounded, the ministry said.
Are you there? Send photos, video, stories
Yulia Shapovalova of Russia Today TV was at the second station at the time of the blast.
"The staff members started urgently evacuating people, so that meant they probably knew about the first blast at the Lubyanka station," she said. "All the people -- a huge crowd of people -- slowly started to move. ... As soon as I got upstairs, I heard the blast."

"It was a terrorist act carried out by the female suicide bombers," Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov said of the first and most lethal explosion, citing the Federal Security Service. "They were specifically timed -- for ... the train was nearing the station -- to make the most damage."
Both stations reopened about 5 p.m. Moscow time, according to Veronica Molskaya from the Press Service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.
In St. Petersburg, three metro stations were shut as the result of a bomb scare.
Millions of commuters use the Moscow metro system every day. An estimated 500,000 people were riding trains throughout the capital at the time of the attacks. It was unclear when the system would return to normal service, and the incident generated fear among commuters.

"I feel scared," one woman said on TV. "I have to walk to get to work, because there is no way I'm going by Metro."
The attacks reverberated around the globe.
U.S. President Obama condemned the "outrageous acts" and passed along his condolences.
"The American people stand united with the people of Russia in opposition to violent extremism and heinous terrorist attacks that demonstrate such disregard for human life," Obama said.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she will offer her condolences to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday in Ottawa, Canada, where the Group of Eight foreign ministers are meeting to plan for the June G8 meeting in Canada.
"This brutal assault on innocent civilians is another reminder that terrorism is a threat to peace-loving people everywhere and must be met with unwavering resolve," she said.
"Together with our G8 partners, we will discuss how to further strengthen international counter-terrorism coordination and cooperation."
New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said police are stepping up security in the New York City subway system.
In Washington, Metro, the operator of the city's transit system, said it is expanding security in light of the Moscow attacks. Coincidentally, it had a terror drill this past weekend and is holding another one Monday.
Why no subway is safe from terror
Amtrak, the national passenger rail network, said there is "no specific threat " to its system, but its police assigned to the FBI's National and Regional Joint Terrorism Task Force "remain informed regarding any potential threats and other security issues."
In Atlanta, Georgia, MARTA's police department has heightened security measures throughout the transit system.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he was "appalled" by the incident and sent condolences to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, according to Britain's Press Association.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack and said he "is confident that the Russian authorities will bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous terrorist attack."
Interpol, the international police agency, condemned the attacks and offered help to Russian authorities in the investigation.
Interpol's executive director of police services, Jean-Michel Louboutin, called the actions "despicable and senseless attacks targeting the public."
CNN's Matthew Chance, Paul Courson and Eddie Demarche contributed to this report
