Seconded on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Once properly modded, it's probably the best open world game I've ever played. Atmosphere out the ASS.

While I am fairly new to the game and its modding scene, I must say that "Stalker Complete 2009" is all one can need for it. For me it is perfect. :)

Nice to know theres other Stalkers ( ;D) around these boards.

I'm not sure if stalker complete has it included, but there was a mod that added about 50 new guns. Everything from Ppsh41s, mossin nagants, MG42s, dozens of skin variations (different wood stocks, etc), to uzis, Bizon smgs, saiga shotguns, and other modern weapons. 5 or 6 hours in, I was still getting surprised by all the new gear I kept finding on random dudes.
I mean... look at this shit!
(h-scroll DESTROYED)

I had to stop playing though because something got corrupted and the game crashed when I went into one of the underground labs needed to advance the game (the perils of modding).
And also, certain areas were almost impossible with the "rebalanced" bloodsuckers. They would hunt in groups of 3 or 4. No fucking chance. None at all.

One game I played a little while ago and thought was pretty awesome was Star Wars REPUBLIC COMMANDO (for xbox and pc). To sum it up, its like rainbow 6 vegas, but you play in a squad of badass stormtroopers. As far as squad based tactical shooters go, it has excellent characterization and a really good storyline. With all the witty radio quips and banter, it feels sort of like left 4 dead (unlike having lifeless squadmates like in r6 vegas). And unlike alot of other squad games, your allies can actually kick some ass in a fight. I highly recommend it, even if you dont like star wars (there's no stupid jedi at all. probobly the only star wars game that can boast that)

I wish airsoft was more popular here in Canada. Retailers that sell airsoft guns need full blown firearm retailing licenses, so the price of them here is about double. Same for shipping them in from importers.

I paintball alot with milsim weapons, and it's great fun, but it feels like a really crude and "unrefined" type of recreational wargame.
It's dirty and grungy (especially in indoor fields), and the weapons are really... utilitarian (no matter how tweaked out they are). What I mean is that the most effective way to use any paintball gun is as a straight up assualt weapon. Always flank, always maneuver, burn in close and light em up. They arn't accurate enough to reliably get the drop on someone from long range. You can never "surprise" someone from a distance, because 90% of the time, the first shot will miss.
And then there's the players. Paintball is a much more mainstream hobby, and there's always a low ratio of enthusiasts to casual or first time renters. Ripping up a gaggle of terrified asian girls and then having to apologize profusely afterward gets old pretty fast. I'd much rather test my mettle against fellow fighters, challenging each other with tactics and maneuvers.

If airsoft is a sniper rifle, paintball is a battleaxe. Don't get me wrong, its a blast to hack stuff up like a barbarian, but sometimes you want that satisfaction of a well planned and executed strategy against other people who appreciate it.

I'm fully aware of all the crap politics behind it, and I hate the abandonment of PC gaming as much as the next guy...

But I still have fun when I play it.
Its still a good game regardless.

I always find it weird that people link grenade-in-the-hatch=instawin to saving private ryan.

In SPR, they dont force open the hatch. They hit the tiger with stickybombs, it lights of fire, the crew tries to bail (dumb move), wheron the first guy that opens the hatch gets shot in the face by a waiting american. He sicks the barrel of his carbine into the hatch to stop it from closing, then they chuck grenades in.

They dont use their macho yankee muscles to pry open the locked hatch.

As I've been led to understand, the .223s toppling ballistics are good in theory, but don't have the stopping power thats needed in a gunfight. They might cause alot of tissue damage, but they dont have the mass to literally knock the guy down.

The fighter might die LATER from the wound, but he can still be combat effective for a few more seconds after being shot, something you definatly don't want.

the problem is also exasperated if the targets are high on opiates or other drugs (or good ol fashioned fanaticism) where they can shrug off the pain for a time. Brits had the same problem with the Zulu. Switching to bigger "manstopper" rounds proved rather effective.

the ruger mini-14 is pretty much a garand with a folding stock.

Yeah, looks like an AK with folding stock to me.

Just a weird angle.

General Discussion / Re: WHY...?

I think the SPR "gray" is mostly because of the desaturated way the movie is shot. If you go back and really look, the vehicles all have full camo (albiet, dirty as all hell) None of them are actually gray or metal.

CoH vehicles are just plain wrong. There's alot of realism skinpacks out there to give the german tanks proper paintjobs.

Now I'm just imagining spamming G and shooting unarmed kits all over the map.

General Discussion / Re: Bf 1942 Mods!
« on: 21-09-2009, 23:09:51 »
Man, I forgot how many mods there were for 42. Not quite halflife standards, but definitely getting up there.

I played tons of EoD, Silent Heroes, Desert Combat, and Galactic Conquest, all fantastic mods.

I also tried out alot of smaller esoteric ones that didnt last too long, but had cool ideas and worked well in the engine. I can't recall any of their names, so ill just give descriptions.

-Warhammer 40k mod. Play as space marines. Drive around in predator tanks with twin-linked lascannons. Cool.

-Post Apocalypse mod. Shoot people with rebar launchers and sawed-off shotguns. Had some awesome weapon and vehicle ideas. Totally mad max.

-Transformers mod. Pick a class. Use class to transform into vehicle (soldier=tank, scout=jeep, ect ect). Awesome.

-Medieval mod. Use swords, spears, and arrows. "drive" catapults and horses. This is the mod fh1 got the idea of "shotgun" melee weapons from. So blame them for uber-knives.

The fact that 4 out of every 5 Japanese soldiers have type100 smgs ruined it for me. Well, that wasnt the only thing, but it did irk me.
