General Discussion / Re: FH2 Thursday Reloaded!
« on: 25-09-2015, 08:09:43 »
I just reloaded the game after being away for a year or two.  Glad to hear folks are still playing, albeit, not as much.  I would love to play on these Thursdays but the problem is, I don't get home until about 9pm CST and I normally I don't to any gaming until after 11pm.  Thinking everyone with a "real job" (I'm self employed.) will be in bed by then.  (I miss the days of full servers at midnight on a Thursday.)

I'll definitely check in on Fri/Sat nights.

Every time I try to download the 1.50 patch, from any and all sources . . . it begins the download but the "hours left" jumps way up and nothing shows as being downloaded.  Right now, for example, I've been trying to download from the moddb link for the last three minutes.  It shows that nothing has downloaded and that I have between 13 - 24 "hours left".  This is on Google Chrome.  I had the same problem with Internet Explorer.

I just started it on Oracle and it is actually downloading . . . but at incredibly slow rate (I have the fastest DL package available through my provider).  It shows that I have 22 hours to go!

Well, at least I'm getting something.  I'll let it go for awhile and see if it speeds up any.

I did get the FH2 launcher & figured I'd give it a try once I got BF2 up and running.

Fingers crossed.

Update: Got it!  Just took awhile.  It's a huuuge file, which is why it confused me at first.  DL'ing FH2 with the launcher now.  Hope to be playing soon.

Success!

I'm back in. Unfortunately . . . I was the only one.  I used to play after 11pm CST.  When I first began playing a few years back, the servers were pretty full.  When BF2 Bad Company came out, things got real thin online so I quit playing as well. (Bad Company and the following Battlefield games were not my cup o' tea.)

Was hoping people had come back since this is/was such a great online WW2 game.  Are people still playing?  If so, what time of night?

Unfortunately neither of those links work either.  Surely there must be some place to get the patch.

Why would the earlier patches be available but the later one isn't?

Weird.

Also, I don't seem to be able to download the FH2 game.  When I hit the download link . . . nothing happens.

Hi guys, I've been playing Heroes and Generals for the last six months or so . . . which has really gotten me to miss the stellar gameplay of FH2 (way better than H&G, IMO).

I dug up my ancient BF2 CD and somehow was able to install it despite the disk looking like it had been thrown from a moving vehicle onto a busy highway.

Problem is, I can't find a place to DL the 1.5 patch.  All of the links I've found seem to be dead.  I was able to get 1.41 . . . so I don't know why 1.5 is so hard to find.

Can anyone give me a working link?

Schweeet!  Disabling UAC fixed it!!  I've got the same Win-7 64-bit setup with this new PC so that must have something to do with it.  Thanks a million, now I can get back to sucking just as much as I used to, but at least I'll be able to flip through my weapons a bit easier.

Just did a full reinstall, removed the old mouse drivers, x'd out the falcon commands . . . and still no scrolling mouse wheel.  Not in BF2 or FH2.  Weird.  My next test will be with a different (brand new) mouse.

This is really strange.  I can't figure it out.  Like I said, the old mouse was working correctly with FH2 on this new computer for a couple of weeks.  When it failed, it seems to have taken all mouse wheel functions with it.

7
Nope, that didn't fix it.  Good advice though.  I didn't see those control options the first few times I looked. Oddly, the secondary controls were assigned to "falcon".  I have no idea what that means.  I don't have any device of that name.  I reassigned the control to the mouse wheel, but it still doesn't work.  The scroll on the Nostromo does work so I guess I'll just have to get used to using that.

I also checked in the config file (after doing a little online research) and the appropriate text is in there.  Maybe I should try another mouse, but this one is brand new & I never had this problem with any of the three other mice that I've used . . . until lightning struck the last one.  Nothing has changed as far as my install goes.  I suppose I could uninstall/reinstall & see if that works.

Ok, a few weeks ago lighting blew up my old PC.  I get a new one, but keep the old mouse (an expensive Logitech gaming mouse).  After reinstalling BF2/FH2, I'm playing with everything maxed and all is well. The old mouse works great.  Then, a few days ago, the mouse starts flipping out.  Not working at all. I was told that this was a lingering effect of the lighting strike.  I don't know. Anyhow, one of the things that went wrong was that the scroll wheel stopped allowing me to move through my weapons.  So, I bought a new mouse.  Just a basic, corded mouse.  Now, it works fine, but there's still no scrolling through my weapons with the scroll wheel.  I also have a Nostromo N52 Gamepad, which does allow me to scroll through the weapons.  I'd prefer not to use it for that though, since using the mouse is faster and more ergonomic.  I've always used the Nostromo and have never had a conflict, so I don't think it's that.

Any idea why I'm having this problem?  How do I get my scroll wheel to flip through the weaponry and why did it quit in the first place?

I remember playing a game of BF2 a while back.  I was teamed up with a couple of people from the clan that was hosting the server.  They were talking about how one of the admins was using some sort of cheat to see where everybody was.

Now, I've always wondered about a few people (one in particular) who play on the WOLF servers.  There's one guy on there who allllways seems to have a 3 to 1 K/D ratio, with kills often over 75 in your average battle.  I've been shot by this guy numerous times.  I've seen him spawn in and IMMEDIATELY  pick me out and shoot me, no matter where I'm hiding.  Just the other night I took a shot at him while his back was turned and I was hidden in a hedge 100 yards away.  He turns, shoots, kills.

Look, I know there are plenty of people out there who are better than me and there are so-called "professional" gamers but . . . I still call BS on this.

It simply looks fishy to me.  I can't believe nobody else smells the same thing.

I also think this guy is connected to the server there.

My suspicion is that he's using some kind of cheat, an aimbot, or something else.  I have no proof & wouldn't even know how to prove it.  It does make me suspicious and somewhat less interested in playing a game where one guy seems wayyyy toooo gooood . . .

So, is it all in my head?  Should I just STFU?  I don't wanna sound like a whiny bi#ch, but I also don't wanna just roll over all the time.

As I recall, my .308 jungle carbine had a longer flash than any of my Mausers . . . but it actually might be an optical illusion because of the comparable size of the two rifles.  You expect a smaller flash from the smaller rifle.

Then again, I'm thinking that the flash from the carbine might actually be larger the long rifle because the barrel is shorter, while the size of the round is relatively the same.

Maybe on the 4th I could get some video of both weapons being shot at night.  Will be at the farm with the guy who now owns the carbine.  I'll tell him to bring it along.

Hah!  Yeah, don't try that night shooting stuff around the neighbors.  I think you'd have more problems than a pissed off range official.

I think it's funny how they added a flash suppressor.  I imagine that if they didn't, the carbine could double as a flame thrower.

Love those rack numbers too!  Sounds like you paid a fair price for it.  Comparable to what you'd give over here.  That's a nice piece.  Hang on to it & get some video for us.

Gun shows.  You'd be surprised what you can find there, if you know what you're looking for.

Pawn shops can be good too.  Pawn shops are usually gun shops and vice-versa.

Estate auctions are NOT the place to buy.  However, they ARE the place to sell.  If I ever sell my guns it'll be at an estate/consignment auction in the country.  You'll get three or for good ol' boys who're just gonna have to have that rifle . . . and they'll pay way more than it's worth just to say they got it.

Wherever you go, knowledge is the key.  Read up.  When in doubt, don't . . . unless you've got money to burn.  Because you will get burned eventually, no matter how much you've read.  (See: $10.00 P-38.)

Hey, I forgot about this thread for bit.

I posted this pistol to a collectors forum.

Turns out that the slide marks have been faked with post-war waffenampts offered by Numrich Gun Parts.  Whoever did it did a pretty crappy job too.  I knew there was something suspicious about the slide when I bought it.  They think it is wartime, but that it has obviously been effed with.

It seems that the frame and barrel are Walther, but there is even some question about those Waffenampts.  The serial #'s & the grips are the only thing that are absolutely legit.

Seems you just can't trust ANYTHING (or anyone) with German WW2 marks unless you have absolute provenance.

So, even though I traded about a thousand dollars worth of old newspapers . . . for a pistol that is worth about half that . . . I don't feel bad because 1. I only paid ten dollars for the papers and 2. it is a good learning lesson.

I saw the guy that traded me the pistol at an auction a couple of weeks later.  He bought a WW2 Luger for $1700.00!  Nice.  I told him about the "fake" pistol & he offered to give me the papers back.  I still kept the pistol because I've always wanted one & I figured . . . when will I ever see one for a ten-spot again?

I plan on shooting it in the next month.  Hopefully it'll hold together!

Right, I know about the commander position & that does work very well when it is used properly (I've yet to give it a try).

I'd just like to have something that I could jump right into and bang off a few rounds with.  I really, really enjoy the way that arty requires two people in FH (although, I wish more people would co-operate).  I'd sure like to see this sort of support made available for the Allies.

Till then, just get rid of the mortar on the beach.  Add a sniper rifle instead as that would be more effective in suppressing the cliffs.  (If there is a sniper rifle . . . tell me where, cause I haven't found it yet.)

Siben, that Jungle Carbine is the one with which you should get a "close-up muzzle shot".  Have you ever fired one of those at night?  Talk about giving away your position!  Might as well light a flare.

Do you have an original, or is it a post-war, cut-down version?  I had a .308, Indian chop job for awhile but I sold it.  I'd sure like to get an original, but they are actually pretty expensive over here.

Yeah, those rules you have are pretty restrictive and I guess there's not as many "wide open spaces" as there are here in the States.  Don't feel too bad about not being able to shoot them at a fast clip.  Just appreciate the feel and the history when you do get to fire them.  I'm sure you do.  A little shoulder bruise from a long day on the firing line is a nice feeling every once in awhile.

About the $2.00 Enfield . . . I own an antique business.  Every once in awhile I get a really good trade.  I traded a table for the rifle.  I paid two bucks for the table!  Don't tell the other guy that though . . .

Here's a nice pistol that cost me all of ten dollars:

It has some issues . . . but hey, for ten bucks I'll take it!
