D-Day ships
« on: 21-06-2009, 17:06:35 »
well i think i thought of a cool idea. Is it possible to have the ships that were there to support (and maybe even some LST's, troop transports, etc) in the distance from the beach. Just as a cool thing to look at. I imagine there would have been alot of ships on the horizion to look at for the germans. Maybe even have a few ships firing there guns? effect of some sort. Sound of those guns firing and maybe even the sounds of the shells landing off is the distance. could even add a little impact effect in the distance.

a 2d wallpaper like static might be possible, however, beach maps tend to be infantry heavy and thus have a lower view distance.

Or maybe static ships that the assault team has to climb off of and into landing craft?

With maybe a few guns, or a cannon, that the allies also have some firepower please.

How was the fog at the time?

I know some destroyers came awfully close (and in Omaha's case I think actually beached) as well as the LCIs (landing craft infantry if that's right...might be LSI) and perhaps a few LCTs.

However thick morning fog could restrict the Germans' view of the fleet.

You'd be spending a hell of a long time driving to shore then. The ships were much further away from the shore than Hollywood likes us to believe.

Being able to call naval artillery strikes would be very useful for the Allies though.

I totally agree with you but keep in mind alot of maps in FH2 are scaled down from the real thing, for the sake of gameplay. Maps like Gazala and El Alamein are far from what size they got in real life so maybe we could twist history here again, for gameplay only.

I remember FH1 Omaha beach being different whenever I played it, for example I remember one time it actually had a destroyer that use its main guns to pound the shore line.

Anyway, my idea was that mybe on another amphibious map(s) we could have the layout that Fh1 omaha map had, with players able to spawn in on vehicles until they were a certain distance away from the ship (at least I think thats how it worked, thats how it appeared to work anyway).

I do hope though that the german MG's will be more protected or something coz in FH1 you just got sniped right off when u sat in that MG
Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning - Winston Chuchill after the British victory at El Alamein in 1942

How was the fog at the time?

I remember watching the Nova/PBS documentary on D-Day a few years back where they interviewed German Pvt. Franz Gockel. He described being woken in the early morning, and then looking out to sea and seeing the allied invasion fleet. He said "we knew we didn't have a chance of winning this battle. They had more ships than we had soldiers."

I do hope though that the german MG's will be more protected or something coz in FH1 you just got sniped right off when u sat in that MG

I'd like to see a different sector of Omaha to be portrayed. FH1 did Charlie sector, that was different. All other mods do Dog Green sector just because that was the sector in Saving Private Ryan.

I'd personally like to see Easy Red sector, which had fewer big bunkers and more well-concealed MG nests. Easy Red was actually the deadliest sector of Omaha. It was where Heinrich Severloh manned his deadly machine gun.
