General Discussion / Re: Development progress?

Angle mod was good idea, it had its flaws in 2.4, but it worked in an acceptable way. Now in 2.45 it's totally fucked up... The easiest and quickest solution would be to realease hotfix with old files from 2.4, but nobody wants to do it, why?  ???
The main problem is people talking about things they don't have a clue about. This part of your post is an example (no offence).
As far as the angle mod is concerned there's no difference between 2.4 and 2.45 (except maybe planes AFAIK, but that's not the subject you're concerned about). How would you expect one to fix an issue that doesn't exist ?

The changes were all about other parameters, and you can't just replace files. Some changes were interesting, some others not. Everything has to be reviewed, checked, rebalanced. That's not the easy cake some players imagine.

From that ridiculous 'rubber band' turret movement, where the damn thing just keeps rotating for about 2 secs after you stop moving your mouse ...
Set the sensitivity to 0.2 for tanks, make sure your mouse sensitivity isn't above 1000 dpi, refrain yourself from abruptly dragging your mouse (i.e. stay calm and control your movements).
Once you've learned it, aiming isn't that difficult, you can even shoot on the move. That's not as easy and accurate as it used to be previously, but it's doable. And don't forget it was also very hard IRL.  ;)

... to the absurd 'angle mod' or whatever the fuck its called ...
So you were a turret hatch lobbing adept ? Or the kind of people killing tanks with a shot from the front, hitting parallel to the side armor ?
Angle mod may have a few weird behaviours in particular situations, but it's anything but "absurd".

... to allied tanks being nerfed on most maps, in quantity and quality.
Ahahah, that's amusing to read this when there are, on the other side, quite a number of people complaining the Shermans are invincible.  ;D

Well, plug the joystick before starting FH. If you plug it after it won't work anyway, it might also be the cause of your extra problems.
Or some sort of compatibility problem between your joystick and BF2 but it would be surprising, according to a quick google search some people have used it successfully in that game.  ;)

That's propably true Strat. And with the wide range of hardware configurations it is even more dificult to determine what is causing problems and it can be very different from player to player. But when I compare FH2 with other software that I am running I always come to the conclusion that the CPU is bottlenecking my PC the most. I am running an Athlon X2 6000+, 4GB DDR2 800, Radeon 6870 under Win 7 64bit. The problem is the architecture of the CPU itself and how it is processing everything. BF2 can only utilize one core, and when I compare my performance in those heavily populated situations with people with newer CPU's who are in the same TS channel with me, then they never complain about bad performance. The gfx is just heavily bottlenecked by the CPU, but atleast I got rid of slow downs when smoke and this stuff shows up compared to my last graphic card. It is not, that it is unplayable but I notice it and FPS starts to jump. I made a funny test on Eppeldorf everything maxed in the american base: when I look towards west oudside the map I get like 90 FPS. Then I just turn around 180 degree looking towards east, where all the action is happening and it drops to 30 FPS instantly.

Well, it's true the CPU can be a bottleneck regarding FPS, I saw some improvement with the last upgrade (but nothing revolutionary, it was already very smooth with the C2D).
Actually the FPS drop you noticed is somewhat normal (whatever the number of players), it's just surprising it drops so much that it annoys you. The only similar cases I heard from were during betatesting on maps that weren't optimized enough (too many/objects too heavy on polygons). I would say in regular conditions FPS don't drop below 40-50 with my C2D.  ;)

Your video card must have 1gb of memory and has more than enough power (I'm still running a HD4850 ...  ;D), the CPU should perform more or less like a E8400. The only thing that might play a role is the memory speed (I had DDRII 1066) but it shouldn't be that crippling, really weird.
You mentioned a graphic card change, could it be that you went from a Nvidia one to the AMD without making a fresh install of Windows ?

I for one have a quite old CPU and the game starts to slow down heavily when alot of players are concentrated on one location.

I'm surprised to read this. If there is a problem with computer power, I wouldn't bet on the CPU, rather on the balance of the entire configuration.

I'm currently running on a Intel i5 3570, I used to use a Intel Core duo E8400 (5 years old) and an AMD Athlon X2 3800+ / Opteron 170 on a secondary computer (7-8 years old) until recently, and I've never had any performance issue on 64+ servers other than some occasional server side lag.  ;)

The only comic moment that comes close to that is when you surprise someone behind a corner and stab him with your knife while he misses every shot from his bolt action...

Well, stabbing a dude wearing a bolt action rifle isn't that original.  :P

What is really, really nice is to stab someone with a SMG or even a MG, I always imagine the face of the player when he realizes, and then how he rages on his keyboard.  ;D

If someone ever had the idea to remove the P40's bombs, better remove the P40 itself.

That thing is already a flying truck. Its poorly aligned aiming sights (+ probably the incongruous changes in projectile speeds) make it hard to use in dogfight in general, and almost useless in turning dogfights. On the top of that, only (very ?) experienced people can land it without exploding because of the tricky landing gear.
Its 2 bombs are the only things that give that plane a purpose.

Afaik angle mod doesn't affect bullets but bigger calibers (that's why .50 on allied planes is much more powerfull than FWs cannons now)

Well, the problem with the FW guns is mainly that *someone* messed all the shells speeds in 2.45, thus messing the shells trajectories, and that *someone* didn't even care it would also affect the aiming ...
So when you're shooting a target with the FW190, the only things hitting the center of the aiming sight are the machinegun bullets, the gun shells drop like some bird crap way below ...  :-X

Oh, and talking about being shot in the cockpit, it still happens in 2.45. Just as it happens quite often a plane gets severely damaged or shot down by a simple MG42 on the ground.

Gaming / Re: Any games like Master of Orion?

Well, Distant worlds matches almost all this:

- the game is so heavy that every task can be automated (or not) to help the player. Colony taxes, mining stations building, ship design, ground forces recruitment and much more.
The ships can be designed as you like, basically you're piling up the components you want according to what is available with your tech level and what you would like your ship to do.

- you can almost customize everything at game start: size and shape of the galaxy (up to 1400 star systems, REAL star systems, not some arcadish thing with a single planet alone in the dark like in some games), amount of pirates, development level of your opponents, victory conditions, tech levels, tech research speed, availability of colonizable worlds and independant colonies, storylines etc ...

- it is SP only (too complex to really work well in multiplayer anyway)

- about the approaches, well the victory conditions (specific to each race) and the start settings can help having completely different games but IMO there's no real way to win, for exemple with pure diplomacy, without fighting.

- modding isn't very developped for now, it's supposed to be favoured in a forthcoming expansion.

- That's definitively one of the most realistic games I've seen on many subjects. For example the economy is simulated and independent. There's a lot of ressources required for ship/station building, harvested at the colonies or in space using mines, then shipped to where it is needed by private freighters, prices vary according to availability and demand, there can be shortages.
The only things you control about the private sector are the transport ships/mining stations designs and the amounts of taxes.

Well, there's really a lot to say about this game. The best is that you google it and find a few tests, it is very good but it's wise to have a better idea of what it is before investing such price.  ;)

Oh, one more important thing, some Death Stars can be found in this game, you might even build your owns if you're advanced enough and very lucky.  ;D

In case someone is interested, Distant Worlds: Shadows has been released 2 weeks ago. It's definitively worth playing (even though it still requires some patching for now).

There's a sale on the base game and all its expansions, 70$ the bundle, if I remember well the offer will remain available until early July.

I didn't say you did Odium, my first quote was answering 5hitm4k3r.  ;)

Thanks for the informations.

I was asking because I know there was a thread about this (by Nemes1s, I can't find anything from bloodydeed) but in fact it seems the code was never sent to anyone. Simpson asked for it, never got an answer, and apparently the only help he got was some incomplete informations about the file modifications from the Finnish guy and "sort this out yourself".

So this thread is useless and the guy that needs to be contacted is Bloodydeed ?

Wrong. The 128 player code is freely accessible to everyone. F|H, WaW, even HSLAN.
Just for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly

But, boo hoo, the baaad [762] and their monopoly. The dark empire. The axis of evil. The Gremlins. The Sith. Yes. Sometimes I don't know if i should take what you write serious, Strat84. I hope the other users do not.

I don't want an argument with you.

But it's also becoming tiresome to read again and again "all the other servers are dead because we are awesome", it's wrong and you know it. 762 #4 is the only 128 players public server online and that's why everyone is on it. Not considering anything else.

Now since you're talking about the code itself, please show me where it is supposed to be freely available to everyone, I'm curious about it.  :)

Right, they are empty and this for almost 24/7 and that shows that we are doing something damn right.

The only thing you've done right that is supported by this fact is the following: you secured a monopoly on the 128 players server.
At least be a bit honest with yourself.  :P

I know a dozen Tiger aces yet no Churchill-ace.

Easy, that's a matter of propaganda.

The IIIrd Reich kept making up heroes fighting in units that symbolized their early success (tanks, bombers).

The British tankers were there as well, but they didn't have their name written in newspapers for every new kill they got.

Piercing the Tiger's 80mm armor with a 75mm M3 gun IRL ? Yes sure, but only below 100m and with a good angle shot.

That makes him suddenly much less dead.  ;D
