CTD on startup?
« on: 14-06-2009, 18:06:56 »

Hello folks

A good friend of mine who's interested in FH2 and wanna try it out got some problems with installing BF2

The install part goes fine, but. When he tries to start it up, the screen goes black for a few seconds and then back to desktop.

I've seen a lot of threads about this and my friend have been trying a lot of different fixes but none of them seem to help. Do anybody out there have any kind of wisdom regarding this we can use?

I've had this before. You sure hes not just doing it wrong on Vista?
Have you tried re-installing?

I can't remember what caused and fixed it for me, it was with the very first release of FH2.

We need more information.

Is he fully patched?  Is he running as administrator with Vista?  Is there an error message?

The more info you provide, the easier it is to narrow down the problem.

So your friend cannot get BF2 to start? Try to see if it generated a dump file.
.Dmp files are created in My Documents\Battlefield 2\Dumps or something like this.

You can open the dump with the wordpad or post it here so I can read it for you.

going black and then CTD could be cause of wrong/forced screen refresh rate
is he using a TFT flatscreen or an old CRT, crt have normaly much higher refresh rate and BF2 by default has 60hz. so if you force a higher refresh rate the game will CTD.
IF this is the case you can alter the resfresh rate in the video.con files

This will reset your game to the default settings. You can
now start the game, retrieve or create a new profile, and re-adjust
the settings using the Menu as normal

delete that file
