Anti tank grenades?
« on: 13-11-2009, 18:11:03 »
I just had a quick idea. I noticed on the turret of a lot of tanks, the hatch is open and theres a few feet drop.

What if grenades could be dropped into these open hatches? this would give infantry the ability to  knock out a tank in a very realistic manner. Since tanks have different armor all around, the "armor" on the inside of this hull could theoretically be made to be sensitive to grenades only, right?

Well, it shouldn't damage the tank seriously, but only kill the crew.

A few thoughts on the gameplay effect:

It might kill the purpose of the fearsome tank BTW, and make AT kits slightly less useful. It could motivate people to storm the tank to exploit this feature rather than hide in fear for it.

There is nothing realistic about throwing grenades inside tanks... Any sensible tank crew will always keep hatches locked from inside if there's enemies about. Some commander's hatches may appear to be open in FH2 but one should consider them to be closed when there's no one on the commander's position. This is, by my understanding, due engine limitations.

I have only heard of one single case, ever, in WW2 where a tank was destroyed by dropping a grenade inside.  It was a German soldier who saw russian soldiers banging on the hatch of a T-34, the commander would open it, speak to them, then button back up.  He snuck up, climbed up, banged on it, shot the commander, and dropped in the grenade.

Obviously, one account does not a rule make.  If the russian commander had kept buttoned up, there is simply no actual way that anyone could open the hatch.  This is not saving private ryan.  Tank hatchs LOCK on the inside.  Sorry, but movies are not historical fact.

Another account was during operation market garden, when 3 panthers tried to cross a bridge. A 6pdr knocked the first one out, but was out of ammo. The second panther commander looked out of his commander's hatch, and went back in........forgetting to close the hatch

This US soldier undernearth the bridge, saw this, and tossed a grenade inside it.

I always find it weird that people link grenade-in-the-hatch=instawin to saving private ryan.

In SPR, they dont force open the hatch. They hit the tiger with stickybombs, it lights of fire, the crew tries to bail (dumb move), wheron the first guy that opens the hatch gets shot in the face by a waiting american. He sicks the barrel of his carbine into the hatch to stop it from closing, then they chuck grenades in.

They dont use their macho yankee muscles to pry open the locked hatch.

Yes, but that is the thing people always ID with, so that's the best reference point.  And of course a myriad of video games, like as I recall Brothers in Arms, that show you physically prying the hatch open....

I feel bad for the SPR German tanker who gets shot in the face, he didn't look like he wanted too much trouble.

I don´t think its a bad idea. But that doesn´t makes it more attractive to be done than using regular AT methods.Tankers aren´t dumb enough to let someone hop on their tanks.

They did take out a Marder with a Molotov cocktail in SPR. But then you can take out the crew of a Marder with a grenade in game now.

Wait a minute...

Bring in Molotov cocktails!!!
