Don´t copy that floppy!. Even the 90s computer games industry seemed to have had terrible problems with software pirates, but instead of punishing their costumers with annoying DRMs, they made this propaganda, sorry, educational video. ^^
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.

I guess this was successful. No one is copying floppies anymore, after all
Tetris was made by Soviets, it belongs to everyone.

KUGELSCHREIBER

At least you know how it works then. It translates to "Ball Scriber" and as we all know there is a tiny ball that´s letting the ink through the peak.
He got banned for our sins. He was not the member FH forums deserved, he was the member we needed.

Well, the proper term in english would be ballpoint-pen. While a "pen" traditionally is one that you dip in ink.
So that comparison pen = kugelschreiber is fails.

At least that's what I just thought up on the fly now.

I think piracy certainly didn't "kill" the game industry but it has made it switch to different business models (that's it "free to play" microtransaction based games in which every year the price of a pixel is increasing) and has raised the prices of AAA titles while forcing indie games into competitive pricing to make a breakthrough. It has also increased the need for annoying DRM systems that (mostly) fail to stop pirates but certainly make life harder for the legal buyers.

All in all I think piracy cannot be stopped, and honestly I don't even think all the big companies want to completely end it as it is, after all free advertising of their products.
This sentence is intentionally left unfinished...

It is different across different companies.

But I think they mostly wanted to kill piracy. It is not a free advertising or such. But there are some business that profited from piracy, namely the DRM companies and other self-proclaiming IP security consulting companies. These semi-charlatan profiteers are good for nothing that increase the cost of software distribution. Like war-mongering weapons manufacturer, as long as there is bad things going on, they are happy to sell their stuff to software companies to fight the piracy with what is seemingly a useless tool.

One of my best ideas to fight it is to somehow "be-friend" the pirates themselves. Let them pirate your software, and you know it, but you can offer the end-users ways to legitimate the pirated copies. Just like Microsoft did with unlicensed Windows copies, you can just buy the license online, bang not a pirated software in an instant!

In order for this to work, they have to limit the distribution of software fixes/patches/updates. So let there be stingy people or clueless noobs or true pirates out there using outdated/buggy products of yours, nobody can't claim software company's money from them. But those with morale calls can somehow contribute to your other revenues.

obviously.

The best example from this is the notorious starforse  protection system. It is known for causing potential harm to your hardware, mainly your CD reader. And a while ago, a company decided to drop starforse as a protection mechanism for their games and you know what they did ? They published a hacked copy of a game on their mainsite as a free to download, to proof that they needed them to protect their software
