Title: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Roughbeak on 16-09-2014, 02:09:19
Hey there, thought this might be a good thread for those things (models, maps etc.) you made, but weren't enough for its own thread.

Feel free to post anything you made regarding FH2 modding. :)

----------------

Alright, over the past few days I have been working on a French house (WW2 themed again) that has "BF2StaticMesh2" materials over it; the model is complete with a Base, Detail, Dirt, Crack, and even some normal map layers. I'm very satisfied with this model, because the layers blend with each other so well - thanks to the alpha channel!

FH2 dev "Nissi" helped me out a lot with this, mainly the BF2/FH2 materials, and I would like to say a huge thank you again to him! I wouldn't be where I am today without him.

Make some german styled houses, townbuildings, villagebuildings, etc for the invasion of germany!  ;D

Roughbeak that looks really good! :D I didn't know you skinned that thing.

Nice Opel skin too. Could be fun to have some ambulances on some maps. :)

I coulda used this thread when I had more time to model crap :P

just out of curiousity will the ambulance be drivable and able to provide people with extra bandages or something?

Really, really nice Outlawz. Looks like some propper Battle Of the Bulge and Alpenfestung conversions. When I remember the old versions you have really pushed them up  :)

I like this screenshot the most:

Very nice outlaw. Brings back many memories. But it looks like those memories might happen in HD some time in the future :D
I also modelled something recently. But I'm afraid of posting that, black helicopters might come and take me away.

Nicely done.

FH2 needs more houses/buildings for sure.

To be honest im a little bit tired of seeing the same variants of them.   ;D

Roughbeak, have you thought about creating some generic eastern front statics?

Definitely, it's just I'm getting more experience at modelling + texturing, and French buildings are my favorite.

Some of these buildings come to mind (for Eastern Front): :)

If you can bring this house up to standard, I'd suggest submitting an application. Nissi and other devs can help you along the way. If you've got time to model and are willing to learn, you could be a good candidate 8)

The current state (more or less) of my model of the Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul de Coudehard, near Mont Ormel (Polish positions during Falaise Pocket).

This is a project I started a while back, but have not finished/touched for a long time.  Recently, [79th]Zmorg got some really great pictures of the church during an excursion into the area...however, I have yet to capitalize on his efforts in getting those pictures translated into further work on the model. :(

I tend to do things in phases of intense interest/progress, then long droughts of nothing as I move to another area of interest...I always cylce back, though, so I still hold out hope that I will finish this project!

Looking at the thread I posted about it, it looks like I worked on the actual model for about one to two weeks before I stopped...and that was back in September 2012.  2 years is a "while back" to me!  ;D

Thanks for the suggestion, I have been thinking about it for quite a while. Although, I have to learn quite a bit more to get comfortable in doing this. :)

@Wilhelm: Very nice start, is this building enterable? I can't wait to see this church skinned!

@Wilhelm: Very nice start, is this building enterable? I can't wait to see this church skinned!

Unfortunately, no, it is not enterable.  I did not have any information on the interior of the building and I didn't want to make it up.  It is mainly just for "historical atmosphere" as it was one of several unique buildings in the area that the battle took place.

And I took a rather odd approach in order to try and get the dimensions right for the model:  I took the recommended door height for Battlefield 2 player models and then used the door cut out of a scale drawing of the church and used the magic of MSPaint to sort of measure out the various parts of the building.  I am not too skilled with numbers or have much experience with modelling (this is the first and only thing I have ever modelled), so this was what I came up with.  I think it actually came out quite well considering the drawing isn't a perfect representation of the building... :P

I like it. Hope you polish it enough some day to get it in the official release. Static modelling is very important for the great immersion factor that was always a strong point in FH2.

Exactly, good point. I already removed a few stair steps going up to the attic. I see I have to fix that third picture top left one, a player might get stuck or squeeze barely through that opening to the back of stair.

there isnt many differences between fh1 and bf42 heightmaps for guadalcanal and iwo jima that i noticed
so i went with what i wanted to use, plus the heightmaps i chose were altered anyways
::)
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Ts4EVER on 28-11-2014, 18:11:35
Of course there is no difference, since they are ported BF42 maps and not FH1 maps. FH1 maps would be Saipan or Tarawa etc.
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: 0utlaw on 28-11-2014, 18:11:55
oh so you wanted fh1 maps ported instead? i misunderstood your statement then, but im sure we will get to those stock fh1 maps eventually as well.

also i never played fh1, i was too interested in dcfinal  so i never heard of that mod before fh2  ;)
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: jan_kurator on 29-11-2014, 01:11:22
Saipan 1944, Tarawa and Tulagi (from FH1 mappack) are the only maps which have any chances to get any close to FH2 standards if ported correctly. Those maps were simply awesome!
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: 0utlaw on 29-11-2014, 03:11:35
I honestly do not care about fh2 standards or if any maps that i port over will ever make it into the actual fh2 mod. This is something I do purely for fun and for others to enjoy, nothing more.

I know that and I enjoyed your last pacific theathre maps very much, also it's unlikely to happen anyway that they will make it into the mod, but if you haven't play FH1 you definately need to check out those maps, it's simply hard not to fall in love with them :D

Will probably be doing the handles as alpha transparencies or if you guys have another idea I am open to suggestions.
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Roughbeak on 05-01-2015, 22:01:59
Cool, very nice!

For the handles it's probably a good idea just to model them.

As for windows take a plane, copy it and rotate 180 degrees on the same axis so they match up on all sides.
I really don't know much about maya, but once you export it to BFmesh view, the end goal is to have an alpha texture for the windows (uv map them), then you can change to "alpha blend" in bfmesh view as well as save it.

However, this is all assumed if you are exporting this to BF2. :)

Yes, it had them since 1913 and until war came to Stalingrad in 1942:

Is there tutorial how to make new soldier and skin and what i need for it?

Thaaaaat's quite a daunting task there ;) but...

To make a new model, you'll need 3Ds Max9 and the POE2 exporting tools.

If you just want to skin current soldier models in game, you really just need Photoshop or some other good image editing program.

As for tutorials; if you're a first time modeler or skinner...

This was my first texture tutorial;
http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/tutorials/skinningdingo.php (http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/tutorials/skinningdingo.php) ;)

And I'm pretty sure this was my first modeling tutorial;

I can't remember which one I started on but cgtuts+ is a great site.

Also all these tutorials are a good way to learn 3D Modeling workflow

(This is only part 1 and is a bit more advanced, kinda requires you to know your way around 3DsMax quite a bit)

Also remember with whatever you're trying to model or texture; learning something like that takes  tons of patience (hence why people get paid to do it)

Good luck :)

Really cool Ivancic, glad you are taking a jump into the modding!

Yeah Matt said everything I could think of, except you might need Zbrush (at least I think this is what the team uses) or Autodesk Mudbox to sculpt out those heads and details going into them. ;)

Rad did this, I think those 3 heads to right goes from 3ds Max, Zbrush (to make those cool details), and the texture with Photoshop.

You can download 3DsMax student version, not sure if it's limited version...

And also not sure if new 3DsMax version will work for FH2/BF2 - I think I've read about it somewhere here...

As Matt Baker said, 3ds Max 9 is the latest you can work with exporting to BF2/FH2.
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Ivancic1941 on 22-01-2015, 21:01:53
Is 3d max 9 from 2014?And is it big like 3 Gig?

Do i need to make only soldiers head and then put it on body that(what i see) every soldier has in FH2?It seem that you dont have to work body only head.

Then can i make uniform for it but put german helmet and equipment?

First ask yourself: Do I know how to model a chair? No? In that case you are in no way qualified to model a soldier.

No 3ds max 9 is old, and just around 900mb.

First ask yourself: Do I know how to model a chair? No? In that case you are in no way qualified to model a soldier.

Well, building on what Ts4EVER said. @Ivancic, you really have to start small in order to "better yourself" shall we say. I mean take this for an example, this was my first attempt at static modeling:

... I know it was seriously terrible, but this gradually improved. All the time, artists take years and years of making their work better. What I am trying to say is start small and work out. It always helps!

------

Going back to your main question, like Kraetzer said, it is old. 3ds Max 9 is not "2009" it is simply the version "9". ;)

I have to totally agree with starting small.  Starting a big complicated model is more than just the modeling process.  All the parts have to be uv mapped and textured and than there is the compiling process.  If you start small you can get all the stages down that way when you move up to more complicated models you won't feel overwhelmed.

Roughbeak, looks like a damn fine start at static modeling to me.
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?

Im going to start with small but i want to know this for future. So please can i make soldiers head and uniform and put it on  etc. german body??
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Roughbeak on 23-01-2015, 22:01:05
Sure you can attempt to create the head and uniform, if you would like, but it takes more than just "putting it on".

Though, start with something small, like a ammo crate or a chair with uv texturing them. Then you can think about learning more advanced concepts. You can try a character, but please don't get disappointed if you fail. 3d artistry takes time, a lot of patience, and above all, starting small.

By the way, here is a good series of modeling at beginning: ;)

Not sure how I want to do the normal maps.  Either through a holy poly bake or dDO/xnormal normal map creation.

Yes, hopefully, this will be for FH2.  Just need a few more details on the bottom, interior, and roof, then I will begin UV mapping, creating a normal map, and texturing!  Yes, there are quite a few inaccuracies, but I really can't be bothered with them right now.  The model is sitting at just over 7k tri's and hasn't been fully optimized.  Also, I really stink at rendering in Maya.

On a side note, if anyone wants to collaborate on a map, preferable an eastern front one, you should PM me and we can brainstorm some ideas.  I'd mainly want to do statics for it so preferable someone that is good in the BF2 editor.

If you are interested in creating models for eastern front maps for FH2, you should consider applying (http://forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/applications.php?) for a modeller position in dev team, you will definately work with someone who is good in the BF2 editor and get advises from our experienced modellers! ;) There is always a need for custom statics to improve quality and add more historical accuracy/uniqueness to FH2 stock maps.

Post by: Roughbeak on 25-01-2015, 15:01:33
Yeah valleyman, give it a shot. Apply to the dev team! Your work has proved you mean business. ;)

I can assure you it's not going to be one of those "30 day" trial thing, it's more a a learning experience than anything, they actually want to help you succeed! You know, learning the ins and outs with the developers here. :)
I probably suggest send a pm to Stubbfan, he is really good at exporting things and working with the Bf2 Editor.

----

Going back to your model, for statics, I am highly convinced that you don't need to bake the model. You just need to uv map it, also create a normal map accordingly, lightmap once the time comes, and the lods, cols, export.

For a unique model like this, I might suggest doing the texture as a "atlas"; Kraetzer might help you once the time comes though.

I'm about to call this done.  Missing a few details like the controls and a few details on the wheel skirts? If anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears before I star UV mapping.  Btw, model is sitting at almost exactly 7k tris.

Remove the support beam and you have something of a garage. Low wall sticking out could be made into a separate model.

thanks! Well, i was doing maps for Half-Life 1 and 2 in the early/mid 2000s. Object creation in Hammer Editor and 3ds Max is the same basic concept, especially when it comes down to vertex manipulation.  Plus, Harmonikater helped and guided me alot.

Back to the project: There just were the base and detail layer in the first picture, you were right! I'm currently adding the other layers too while reading through your thread.

here a version with full base and detail and dirt in process:

(http://www11.pic-upload.de/thumb/17.05.15/8jav3exgcuv.jpg) (http://www.pic-upload.de/view-27063905/stall_skinned5.jpg.html)

Remove the support beam and you have something of a garage. Low wall sticking out could be made into a separate model.

The support beam stays, i need detail! :) Besides it's going to be more of a stable/tool shed. And about the wall: I wanted to fool around a bit with smoothing groups and see if i could model something more natural/organic/non-linear.

Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: psykfallet on 17-05-2015, 16:05:02
looks nice, i'd agree making the wall a separate object would make much more sense and be more practical for actual use. that's a thing FH2 could use alot more of, objects you attach to buildings to make them more unique like shop signs, marquees, balconys and what have you.
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Roughbeak on 19-05-2015, 17:05:31
It does look nice!

I would suggest looking at the middle beam, see how there are dark seams on the edges? It is most likely the base or dirt (even both!) showing too much detail - meaning that you must have uv mapped too close to the top or bottom.

Maybe look at the floor, pick a dirt texture that has:

and uv texture it on! That way, the floor will look much better with spread-out dirt. To keep in mind, I would select the floor and ramp (the part which inclines a bit) polygons, that way it will blend better.

--------

Yes, I probably would remove that wall to keep it separate... :)

Khaki Drill shirts with shorts or trousers, as worn in NA, are correct. Later in the war, they were changing to green ones, either by boiling them with certain shrubs or by getting new, factory coloured uniforms. Proper headwear would be either the slouch hat or ghe Wolseley helmet.

@Rabbit: With what tool/software have you done those colormaps?

T-paint  ;D L3dt is REALLY good though and I highly recommend it, it just wasn't doing what I wanted.

Meanwhile, I'm currently working on another Pacific project:

I need to improve textures though... Anyway, it should be an easy guess for you what map it will be! ;)

looking good, what is the scale of the map? IIRC this Island isn't very big IRL. Also, is that Sidi Rezegh airport bulding in the middle?  ;D

I think it's 2 km, the map isn't big - you can see a nearby flag from another with the set view distance. And yes, I was thinking what building can be used as HQ building at the airfield, so I thought there's no other option than this building from Sidi Rezegh... Fortunately, we got permission from Tripwire to use their HQ building from Red Orchestra and I hope we will successfully port it into FH2... ;)

Hey,Muzdin you said when you finish that map wit Ausises that you will give us more screenshots.

Hey,Muzdin you said when you finish that map wit Ausises that you will give us more screenshots.

The map is not finished yet... I have encountered problems with some custom statics and before these problems are fixed I can't start lightmapping... I don't like this situation- I simply don't like leaving unfinished things, but what I and you need is only patience in this situation. ;)
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Roughbeak on 06-11-2015, 15:11:18
What's the problem with those statics?
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Mudzin on 06-11-2015, 16:11:08
I have some overgrowth objects problems - I used palm trees from jungle_test folder, which look great (what you can see on my previous screenshot), but they have problem with disappearing trunks earlier than the palm's leaves at the edge of the view distance. So in the distance you have weird floating palm leaves in the air. Also there's similar problem with bamboo OG objects, which also become "sticks" at the edge of view distance...

Also I have some problems with ported statics from FH1 - houses have for example not "walkable" stairs or there's long wooden bridge under which you can't swim with a boat, because it has some weird invisible wall  under it...  ::)
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: Roughbeak on 06-11-2015, 18:11:31
The stairs would be an easy fix, just assign a stair material to the collision2 (col2).

Also that "invisible wall", is a collision issue as well, raise the part up a bit. :)

Wait, forgot to put this:

Col0= bullet impacts
Col1= Vehicle
Col2= Soldier movement
Col3= Bots

Yes

Well guess it remained a test then.

Well guess it remained a test then.

I know, but I think it will be easilly fixable for someone who knows sth about BF2 statics/models ;)

Don't know why I have such error recently in the editor output when I want to "toggle draw overgrowth":

Ignored Warning[RendDX9] : State 181 not in statemap

And after that I can see only generated overgowth in the close distance, further all overgrowth is simply white...

Any ideas?

I was getting the state 151 version of that for a whole six months time.. Really drains a lot of FPS. Just went away last week for any reason.

mudzin if you want to, send me the unpacked map version, and ill take a look to see if it does the same to me in the editor. if not, it may be a problem within your files.

Ok, unfortunately my graphic card GTX460 probably decided to die yesterday (I'll try to do sth with it) and I changed it to my older 9600 GSO. Worked today in my editor and this problem didn't appear anymore... Strange... Not sure if the graphic card was the problem by itself though... Yesterday, I updated my graphic card drivers and Windows too...

What happened to No man land? Were they atleast close to release something? Aslo were there BF1918/2?

Love this https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0VLkWRFdfHY

It died away, too much passion, too little effort to actual product.

Bf1918 crew did handful of stuff for bf2 that No mans land inherited.

Map I started to learn myself in editor.Little statics, little roads but will learn colormaps etc.
Question:That thing is in Alps. Now what were roads there(if you can asume)? Were there asfalt roads, maybe only road from france to italy was asfalt as it is road of connection between that two countries?

Hi,

I'd suggest taking a look at some ground level photographs from that area to get a better idea of the roads and/or the landscape. Hope it helps!

I was trying to create a heightmap today using weird "in-house" techniques, and I got a tripy result:

Spoiler
(https://s31.postimg.org/qvmztfpmv/heightmaptest.png) (https://postimg.org/image/qvmztfpmv/)

I blame this on the suffocating spanish heat, it doesn't let my brain function properly.  :P

Lesson learned: when you're a newbie, follow the tutorials first word by word before starting off on wild adventures.
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?

That has to do with the format of the raw file.
Title: Re: What have you modded recently?
Post by: MajorMajor on 28-06-2016, 18:06:23
Yeah, also while the map loaded there was a message on the loading bar saying that the terrain sizes didn't match.

If you want to see what I did:
Spoiler
- Got heightmap in 3DEM
- Converted it to grayscale
- Converted to UTM projection
- Saved as tif image
- Loaded in paint.net
- Changed size to 1539*1539
- Divided it rather sloppily (using layers and 513*513 squares) into the 9 different terrain zones
- Loades each terrain image in photoshop, converted to RGB mode and applied some gaussian blur
- Saved as RAW

It was really an experiment anyway. I'll follow the proper tutorial on wednesday or thursday.
