Weapon names.
« on: 17-06-2009, 13:06:38 »
As we all know, tanks and airplanes were commonly named by their crewmen/pilots, and on occasion infantry weapons and the like received similar affectionate monikers. The question is then, if you were to name your tank/plane, infantry weapon or whatever, what would you name it? I'm not talking about the given names to a model of weapon (Spitfire, Garand etc.) or the names given to ships, just the informal paint jobs on tanks and planes, and the loving names an infantry soldier calls his first line of defense when alone in a foxhole (if certain war movies are to be believed).

Personally, I've always thought Redeemer would be a cool name for either a sniper rifle or a tank, as would In Fear and Faith. I'm an atheist, by the way, so I don't really know why those two come to mind. Sticking with the musical theme (perhaps someone gets the references) Between the Buried and Me also seems like a sweet name for a rifle.

So, let the bad jokes begin, and get ready for an assault from the weekend comedians. Hopefully someone far more clever than me can come up with a few good ones.

There's an old superstition tradition that all ships should preferably be named after women, but at the very least called "her" instead of "it", because it brings good luck (and shows respect to her). By extension (since this custom probably dates all the way from the Antiquities), this covers the "ships of the land" and "ships of the air", probably "ships of the space" as well, ie. pretty much all vehicles.

So I would give my tank or plane a female name. Though, maybe something a bit more honourable than what I do with my cars. I name them after porn starlets. :P

To be fair, if I was a tanker and facing spending the next few years with a Sherman, couldn't hurt to name her Sophie Dee. Then you'd at least be able to crack jokes about 'riding' her and spending all day 'inside' her.

I would name my Crusader Mk.I "Knock-Knock Joke" Since it likes to knock on the sides of tanks for awhile before the punchline.

In the book "Thunder Run" about the battle of Baghdad in 2003, one of the tanks whose crew was interviewed was called Cojone Eh? and another was called Creeping Death (and the crew listened to the Metallica song before each combat mission).
