Title: Map Crash Percentages and Easy fixes
Post by: Pacifist on 10-03-2011, 21:03:45
A thread to compile a list of fixes and likely problems for when your map craps out at ?%.

Windowed mode shortcut. Using this will almost always provide you with a error message specifying the
problem file when you crash from your map.

To enter windowed mode make a copy of your FH2.exe and change it's shortcut as follows.

"D:\Games\Battlefield 2\FH2.exe" changes into "D:\Games\Battlefield 2\FH2.exe" +fullscreen 0

If you crash and still don't receive an error message check the rest of the post.

"Unable to add Map "(map name)" because it does NOT Exist in the Mod "fh2".
Check the map folder, info sub-folder and (map name).desc file for capitalised names. On Linux servers all file and folder names are required in lower case.

Easy fixes.

Problem: Finding out what side of the ladder is climbable.
Solution: Go to [Level Editor/Render/Toggle draw collision meshes/Physic meshes] switch it to on. The green side is climbable blue is not.

Problem: Terrain textures resemble a checkerboard.
Solution: Go to [Terrain Editor/Texture/Set low detail Texture(at the bottom of the right hand menu)] Select the only dds file shown. Then select the button below it [Generate Low Detail Map].

Problem: Shadows are pitch black.
Solution: Copy/paste the Objectlight.con from another map into your editor folder.

Problem: Porting over a FH1 map makes the terrain to high.
Solution: Use the terrain height indicator in the levels tweak to adjust it.

Problem: Statically placed overgrowth becomes boxes of texture at distance.
Solution: Generate overgrowth atlas.

Problem: Crashing in editor while placing undergrowth.
Solution: Use this .exe file http://ifihada.com/~spitfire/bf2editorlaa/bf2editor.exe

Post more up as you find them.

Problem: Static placed overgrowth becomes boxes of texture at distance.
Solution: Remove "Object.isOvergrowth 1" from all objects in the "StaticObjects" file.

Or generate overgrowth atlas.

Map doesn't show up in loading screen list: check INFO folder/ DESC file for correct name

A similar problem:

Map shows in Create Local Game, Server Launcher and BF2CC Map List.  Refuses to run from the map list on a linux server with the message:

"Unable to add Map "(map name)" because it does NOT Exist in the Mod "fh2".

Check the map folder, info sub-folder and (map name).desc file for capitalised names.

On Linux servers all file and folder names are required in lower case.

My map crashed at 69%. Could that be roads or something else?

Have you tried locating the issue in Windowed Mode (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=20396.0) or what message did you receive with it?

well it's rather obvious what the error is.. you can't have a chinese levelname!

Seriously though it's missing colormaps for the surrounding terrain which you have activated either by choice or not. A simple fix for now, go to any other map and copy the missing files into your map. Later on you'll need to make your own custom ones if you intend to use the surrounding terrain.

15% Broken terrain.raw

I have this, anyone know a fix? Deleting it and resaving compiled terrain regenerates the file but doesn't solve the crash.

edit: solved, wasn't terraindata, it was a kit item index conflict in one of the kits.

Well my map crashes on 14%
But what is mapdata file??
And what should i check in "gameplayobjects.con" file??

I also suspect a reason
That my map has a vehicle navmesh but its doesnt have any enterable /playable/drivable vehicle

So what should i do??
Please tell me both the things

First of all, are mapping for FH2 or BF2? Because if it is FH2 I might be able to help, but for BF2, not so much.

Well i map for both FH2 and BF2 as i am a hardcore mapper...

So tell me about both...

But as you might know that i am mapping for BF2 give it the first priority...

So tell me please

You are a "hardcore mapper" for FH2 and BF2, yet you do not know what the mapdata.py is?

Anyway, the mapdata.py file is where all the code for FH2 goes. I don't think vBF2 has it, since it deals with stuff like kit limiting, push mode etc.
As for the gameplayobjects.con, it could be any number of things. What kind of objects are you loading?

Dude...let me clearify....hardcore mapper doesnt means that you know everything...
You also dont know something...even though you are a Developer....

Secondly...
I have some hedgehogs...bunkers and some barbed fences in my map...
And also LCVP'S (static)

just admit that you've just started your experience with mapping (nothing wrong about it) and don't make fool of yourself  ;)

Well I certainly don't know everything, but I do know that bunkers and fences are not loaded in the gameplayobjects.con, but in the staticobjects.con. Just a little stab in the dark: Did you make a gameplay layer and place object spawners in there? Or did you just put the static machine guns in the map?

I'm not sure if I'm in the right thread, but I'm having crash issues when my boot camp map stopped at 14%.  -I don't have a mapdata.py for it
-I don't see a gameplay.con for the map
-Overgrowth? I don't think I have that since the trees are static objects.

If you don't have a gameplayobjects.con you can't play the map anyway. Note that there is an official equipment test and practice map now called "Firing Range".

Oh.... I thought they meant gameplay.con.  I didn't it was called gameplayobjects.con.  I see about a dozen of those in the folder.  Does the gameplayobjects.con have to be in a specific place in the map folder?

Besides, my map has more than just a firing range.  It also has a large battle area.

CRASH ON 14% ALSO MEANS ISOLATED ISLANDS  IN NAVMESH

Thanks...
Cheers!

Hello,

Please load the map in Windowed Mode (http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=20396.0) and if you receive an error, please post the message here. Thanks!

Okay, perhaps TS can shed some more light on this subject, but have you added any custom content into your map?

45%-59%
  • Remove vegetation placed on the secondary terrain around the map.
Maybe check the vegetation out, since you mentioned your map crashes around there.

problem solved , now it crashes at join game.. i have no custom kits

100%
  • 'join game' crash. if the map has proper low detail textures generated, but still crashes at 'join game' while on low graphic settings, check the water.con. renderer.waterAnimSpeed needs to be > 0 or the map will crash on low graphic settings at 'join game'.
Try that, hopefully that will fix it!

I am making a map for VANILLA BF2 and not fh2....so there is no mapdata.py file

i found the problem though

14% also means faulty Navmesh!

now just dont thank me!  :P  ;)  ;D

Add this in 15%

Check weapon item index , do not same (example : usrif_m4 itemindex 3 , ushgr_m67 itemindex 3)

At 15% it can also be an overgrowth problem. I fixed it by deleting the overgrowth material, and regenerating.
Everything else would not work. SO WATCH OUT GUYS.

I recommend checking that shit first, and doing a backup of the entire level folder, before going for the terrain, or deleting statics. I lost a lot of work, but at least its fixed. Just some feedback.

I found out eventually
When looking at debug logs. Shall I look at the "debug_unknown" file or the "BFlog_unknown" file for the answer to the CTD?

more important: How the FFFF do I make the controls work when inside the debugger?
