Rudek and the Bear Kickstarter
« on: 25-10-2014, 04:10:07 »
Ever been interested in a webcomic on World War 2?  Wish there were more artists willing to deal with historical events?  How about if said webcomic featured a little known area of history?

Well look no further, because Rudek and the Bear exists!  Set in 1929 along the Polish-Belorussian border, Rudek and the Bear tells the tale of a company of Polish Border Guards and Belorussian smugglers.  It is a prequel to a future graphic novel, Zuzel and the Fox, which will be set in Danzig at the start of the war in 1939.  Originally supposed to simply tell how characters Rudek and Malutki meet, Rudek and the Bear morphed into a serious undertaking, and is now on kickstarter for actual publication in physical form.

So, before I post the link, this is one of my favourite web comics.  The humour is amazing, the artist is fantastic, and the pure fact that he is doing it all based around 1929 Poland is wonderful.  The project IS already funded, however he is setting up push goals, and hey, why WOULDN'T you want to throw money at this awesome project!

And here's a rather moving example of the artist's work:

How do you know you don't like it if you haven't tried? ;)

Think of it like Maus, the incredibly awesome, and moving, graphic novel on the Holocaust.

These days I have no time for new webcomics, and anyway, my money has gone on SSSS already.  And to be brutally honest, Poland is boring as a setting as far as I'm concerned.

<shrugs> I guess I thought, on a forum as in touch with history as this one, there would be more interest in historical fiction.  Oh well.

Im not much into historical fiction, quite the opposite. To me inaccuracies and such in movies and whatever are naggers. But its not the fiction side that struck me, its the whole animal theme. Its just not my thing.

Any setting can be boring if the story is poorly told. And by the same token, vice versa.

I recommend everyone to check out "It Was the War of the Trenches" if you haven't already.

"The Great War" by Joe Sacco is also pretty impressive, though not a comic, but a panorama drawing of the Battle of the Somme.
