Server joining CTD

Hello! Old to the game, new to the forum.

I got back to FH2 after getting a new computer but as I have no CD/DVD-drive, I just downloaded a pre-installed BF2 online and installed FH2 on top of it.

Creating a local COOP-server seems to be working fine, but when I try to join public server, the mod crashes to desktop. Often it doesn't give a message but one time message box from Microsoft C++ redistributable said, runtime error.

So do I need a portable drive to install proper BF2 with a CD-key or is this a compatibility issue? All suggestions and help is welcome  :)

Have you tried the standalone https://playfh2.net/ ?
