Well,
in FH1 flying the planes was really easy, even with keyboard. You had a third-person-view behind the plane.
In FH2 I havent seen much good pilots; even in BFE-WaW our pilots are almost the same guys (for years now)? There are not much guys who try the planes for combats.
Sometimes I tried to test my pilot skills (desert maps), but even when I didnt crash my plane, it's not much as fun as in FH1. You have almost no view because of the realistic cabin view and the missing third-person-view. Dogfighting is a pain.
May be FH2 misses the right planes for newbies; being good at Stuka is not easy at the beginning, but I am just wondering about this "issue" since the start of FH2. May be I am just too bad? ;)
-
I can "trench run" with a storch under bridges and on a particular map.
Dogfights I cannot do though
-
You're bad, cause I can fly just fine. I got shot down by the pro pilots in FH1, and I get shot down in FH2. But I can still easily shoot down the casual pubbienoob like yourself ;)
-
Hehe Torex, you should always remember that flying was and is only a side show in the BF series. There were always a few cracks (MGManiac, Orange, to name two from WaW and a few others) and then there was a long and deep nothing. Same thing has happened in FH2. I personally have mostly resigned from flying (still get a rush from time to time), but that is ok, I'm more of an engineer now and I'm enjoying it even more.
-
It's not difficult to fly really. Although I can agree that dogfighting ain't my thing in FH2. Although im good at it in IL-2 :P. Cockpit in itself ain't a problem either, but we dont see very and that combined with the cockpit makes it a bit difficult sometimes to have the complete overview.
-
It is very hard to win any dogfigths against people with fancy Logitech's that have adjustable sensivity. >:( ::)
-
I can't get used to have a joystick in FH2 for some reason. I can't get the throttle to work and the lack of free look is bad for me. Even with those problems set aside I still find the keyboard (and sometimes mouse) a better option.

check for joy2key

I have a gamepad to fly although i must admit i prefer tanking to flying and when i do fly i prefer stuka over anything.
-
The learning curve is higher compared to FH1. After you have mastered the controls it's a case of who has the best tactics.
I know a few good pilot who can throw a tail within 5 seconds.

Flying became far to easy after 2.2 patch. Now its boring.
-
After 2.2 more depends on wich plane do you fly, than how good are you. I remember Mareth line dogfights: me in Beaufighter vs 109 I lost 2/3 dogfights, but 1/3 I won. Now after 2.2 it is almost impossible to make dogfights even against stuka :(
There is simply herarchy now for me:
Fw190>Typhoon>Spitfire>Mustang>Thunderbolt>109>Hurricane>Stuka>Beaufighter>Piper>Storch
You still can fight Planes wich are next to eachother but it is hard against pillot as skilled as you. For example you can kill 109 with Hurricane but it isnt as easy as killing 190 with Mustang.
-
flying was hard in 2.0 to 2.2 (i think) then it got really easy
speed got reduced and turnability increased
also there is weapon alignment + weapon damage overhaul ...
-
It's just boring because the planes don't go fast
-
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away... called sector 2.1 planes were like speedy gonzales on crack and you couldn't shoot them down unless you were on their six.
-
I still have problem shooting them down even being on their six ;D
-
If you can't kill them in a dogfight then hop in an AA :)
-
FW190 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VQKlHLy7fA) this is just taken from one round of Operation Totalize played on a popular server, I think the thread originator is connecting to the wrong places...
Fw190>Typhoon>Spitfire>Mustang>Thunderbolt>109>Hurricane>Stuka>Beaufighter>Piper>Storch
Fw190>109>Typhoon>Hurricane>Spitfire>Mustang>Thunderbolt>Beaufighter>Stuka>Piper>Storch
-

Well, that's not really my though. The only true difficulty is that you had to often check your position and be careful with your trajectory to strafe something on the ground. Just as the things were in real life.

Is there any difference between Africa and Normandy spitfire in performance?
-
I doubt it. Their .tweaks are probably copypasta.
-
Wich is stupid as by the normandy time, the RAF had much better models then the MK V, wich was largly phased out in 1943 because it was no match vs the FW190
-
I played 1 on 1 on cobra with the FW190 ... That thing is so good.I could easilly let the other guy on my six with his P51 and i could kill him at ease...Too good imo if i can shoot down planes with it ;D.

Though FH spit is is really good against FW190. Actually much better than Typhoon as you have chance to get aways from it if it doesn't shoot you down at first sight. Pedals are the key.
I also like the rifle caliber MGs on planes, huge ROF.
-
Aww dear. I mourn the loss of enjoyable flying in FH2..
2.0-2.2 flying, you are dearly missed.

Fw190>109>Typhoon>Hurricane>Spitfire>Mustang>Thunderbolt>Beaufighter>Stuka>Piper>Storch
Its most certainly not. More like:
bf109>spitfire=fw190>typhoon=hurricane>thunderbolt>mustang>beaufighter>stuka
-

;D
But so true ...

well, if you have problems shooting planes from behind, you forget to use the air break ("afterburner" in the controls menu), it will let you stay longer behind.
also, having a joystick helps, otherwise massive amounts of table space is required. Played with mouse on BF1942/FH1 - possible but just killing your arm.
In FH2 1/4 of the time it depends on luck, even a middle skilled guy can take you out if he luckily dived after you did, but half of the time you can dodge it by flying really low near the ground, between the trees with drunk unpredictability.
The rest 3/4 its skill, even in stuka i find it easy to dogfight against 2 middle skilled enemy fighters. stuka breaks in mid air make opponents come into your killzone or attacking from 6 is just a piece of cake.
The best planes are the ones that have a cannon/mg shooting through propeller. guns on the wings need more calculation where to hit, so FW190 and BF109 are the best out there in terms of air superiority. without competition.
Except for a very few exceptions, I hardly find real adversaries in the air. But if I do, I always thank for a good dogfight.
A tip: don't sit in artillery when I am flying for opposing team.

Do I smell a gauntlet of challenge! I was just about to divulge my greatest tactic, however seeing that there are some people out there still interested in flying, I shall not be divulging anything.
-
lol von small, whenever i see you from my canopy, you are on foot and size of an ant.
Seriously I wish to see more decent flyers out there ;)
Zeimer's tactical doctrine =>
1. Stay high, dive deep, fly sideways or upside -down - for better view and unpredictability.
2. Strafe enemy stationary arty whenever possible.
3. when escaping, make jerky, unpredictable manoeuvres, that 7/10 lets you escape the pursuit, 2/10 lands you on a tree, 1/10 kills you, because your pursuit is just as drunk
-
A tip: don't sit in artillery when I am flying for opposing team.
LOL, why not? That would mean artillery is denied the entire round just because you're on the opposing team ;D
As you might have noticed, I took my chances even after you killed me a few times, because the shells landed on enemy areas inbetween the times you were flying by, were helpful enough for my team ;)
-
I find flying in FH2 extremely difficult.
That's because I either:
1. Spawn too far away from the planes (I don't usually plane camp when a couple people are doing so).
2. Take forever to load the map and see all planes already fighting as I first spawn in.
3. Feel like something else.
4. What planes?
The actual flying is fine. Though I would appreciate them going a tad faster, I'm glad an enemy is not invulnerable in a turn.
As for point 2, is it just me, or does hslan have a very quick time to roundstart?
My opinion on plane balance seems to be that the German planes are somewhat better. The only real thing the Allies have going for them is rocket ordinance, and the Beaufighter when compared to the Stuka; it can easily strafe all but the Pz3 from medium tanks down.
-

Absolutely agreed. I can't count the times I swore because I was running out desk space and the the mouse helplessy fall of the desk and so does my plane.
-
I always hate Otto Zeimer when he's flying, actually when he's on the opposite team doing whatever. Because he's too good for me ;D
So, when he is flying a fighter, I take a Tank. When he is flying a bomber, I do infantry, when he is doing infantry, I do artillery/observer. Generally, a rule of thumb is not to go against Zeimer 8)
-
Their always have been 2 persons i dislike when i am playing against
Otto zeimer
Dazlayer
you 2 are just!
But when i manage to kill either one of you, it gives a great feeling.

I know TA, you always like to acknowledge your kill :)

That whole clan gives me the creeps, something suspicious there if you ask me, not random that all DLF have cat reflexes and know how to curl tank shells into a kill with just one shot. I know, don't band about slander without proof, I'm happy to accept they are all demi-l33t, for now.

Also, it's boring that the cockpit doesn't move anymore like in previous versions. It feels like bf1942 all over again

BF1942 at least had gravity.

That 1/10 is for me almost 5/10... the worst thing: if I try to escape I often dont see the real horizon and flying head-over... a horizon indicator would be good ;)

when it is against you! ALWAYS!

Freaky Scandinavians
I think because the liquor is way more expensive there, they play the game less drunk. That's gotta be it
