City of Ruins
« on: 01-08-2010, 13:08:12 »
Today's the 66th anniversary of Warsaw Uprising.

According to that, 5 minute digital reconstruction of flight over Warsaw in August '44 premieres. You can watch short trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WaL6WYwzQFs Based on photos and movies, to be as accurate as it can be.

When I get the full movie I will of course post it here.

Chwała poległym.

One word: Wow!

I just wish there would be more of these kinds of reconstructions.

If I was in Poland, I would really like to see it, but I'm in Canada, it's a little bit too far for a road trip :P

It would be really intense if they made one of those dioramas of the ensuing battle.  You know, from like the "Believe" trailer for Halo 3?  That would just be awesome.  The Warsaw Uprising is awe inspiring, anyway.

I can only offer my deepest respect and admiration today for the Polish people, and the men, women, and children who died fighting for their freedom in Warsaw, with no hope of rescue by the allies who had turned their back on Poland.....

The highest respect to the brave Polish fighters. And the woman, children and ordinary civilian who did everything they could to help them.

I once read, that russian forces where preparing to help the polish at warshaw..When they recieved word of the soviet high command that they will not attack and let the germans handle it. Many soldiers where shocked to hear this and several deserted their post in a futile attempt to try and help...All get excecuted

Damn nice, I normally always experience WWII like it was in another dimension, due to lack of colour in the shots. Some museums in Normandy had colored action photo's and it looked so weird. This too, but very leet though. :o

Well, that was the initial plan, to hold the city in control for few days and let russians in, so it could be said that Polish, not Soviet army liberated Warsaw. They hold it for over 60 (!) days and soviets never came...

We can assume that it was known to Home Army generals that for Stalin a good polish underground soldier is a dead one, but you know once the big machine is started it is not so easy to stop it. At August 1st people were happy, happy that they finally can take up open fight vs Germans.

Soviet army stayed at right bank of Vistula, Soviet airforce hadn't been allowed to fly over Warsaw, west-allied request to have bombers with support for uprisers land in Russia was denied (they flew anyway, just longer route and much lower quantity than they could with landing fields on the east) and the city was burning...

Also, the Polish Parachute Brigade had trained to drop into Warsaw, and repeatedly requested to do so even when the battle was in its final stages.  The british command refused to approve it though.   :-\
