I have been relatively interested since I saw the CGI trailer in one of the TGS podcasts. And that music, it's bad ass.

Tribes: Ascend is fast and very much skill based free online multiplayer shooter made by Hi-Rez Studios. It's successor of the 1998 game Starsiege: Tribes and Tribes 2.

Good old fashioned PC shooter that actually rewards skill rather than lucky run'n'gun tactics. The gameplay is based on jetpacks and "skiing" around large maps. The main game mode is capture the flag, which also features land and air vehicles. Other game modes include small arenas, team death match and a game mode based around control points.

Note that this video is from the closed beta, so pretty much everything explained during the first 10 minutes has changed. The gameplay is still similar, though.

TL;DR (or didn't watch rather)

- Free to play, weapons, classes and unlocks bought with XP or gold.
- New weapons usually sidegrades rather than upright better weapons.
- Upgrades reasonably easy to get without paying anything. Gold or XP boost help quite a bit if you want new weapons.
- First real money purchase grant you lifetime VIP status --> more xp.
- You don't have to pay anything, but if you like the game, I would recommend the $30 gold pack, it gets you started nicely and, well, supports the company.
- NOT pay to win.
- Game is fast and weapons fire projectiles: game requires skill unlike CoD style hitscan weapons.

I have played Tribes since the closed beta, and I must say that it's one of the best online shooters in a long time. First I played with a free account, but since the game has sucked me in, I have spent about 45€ in boosters and gold. I now have all the classes and all the weapons I need, and whole lot of gold and XP waiting for new stuff to be added in future updates. Oh, did I mention that? They add new maps, weapons and equipment in free updates. (Well you have to unlock weapons with XP but anyway).

Few more words about the pay-for-free model. It is one of the better models out there. Not quite Turbine's model, but close. The only thing you can't get by playing is different skins for classes. Originally those were bit on the expensive side, but after receiving feedback Hi-Rez Studios lowered the prices and refunded gold. They do listen to the community.
