Hi all,
I've been playing FH2 on my windows 7 PC for a while, and now I'm trying to install it on my windows 10 laptop but it doesn't seem to work. Every time I launch the game and press "Play" in the launcher, the screen turns black for about 10 seconds and then it gets back to the desktop.
I've tried to turn off the compatibility mode and only running it as administrator, which didn't help. I also downloaded the stand-alone version as I read about on the forum, but I still experience the exact same issue. Is there someone who has an idea on how I can fix this?
Kind regards and merry christmas,
Mark

Hi Mark,
try asking in the #tech-support channel on our Discord (https://discordapp.com/invite/QnQ9JpS). Radiosmersh is the guy you may want to speak with, he is the creator of standalone installer.
-
Hello,
I'm the creator of standalone installer, as jan pointed out above, and I probably know the reason. I have discovered lately that the DirectX web setup that is launched during installation failes on some occasions. Can you run this (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/confirmation.aspx?id=8109) DirectX installer and see if it fixes the issue? Sorry for the inconvenience.
-
Hello,
Thanks for your replies and I'm sorry for my lack of an answer, I didn't get a notification in my email:(
I tried installing the DirectX file you sent me, but nothing changed. Did I do something wrong? The installer asked me where I wanted to install it, I created a folder on my desktop and installed in in there. Then after I installed it in that folder, I ran the .exe file it created in my desktop folder and installed DirectX. Did I do something wrong along that proces?
Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it,
Mark

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I'd suggest installing DirectX on C: instead of on desktop. Not sure if it would make any difference, but it doesn't hurt to try.
You tried running it in Win7 compatibility mode already, right?
-
I tried installig it on C:, no difference... I tried running windows 7 compatibilty but it doesnt work as well.
-
Could you describe where you downloaded and how you installed the mod? If you do that, we might see which steps are OK and where it might have gone wrong.
-
The solution for myself, I went into (as I had a black screen then ctd):
"Documents\Forgottenhp 2\Profiles"
Select your profile and tweak the "Video.con" and the Hz number needs to match your screen/monitor after "VideoSettings.setResolution"
Best regards,
Roughbeak

- I downloaded the standalone version from http://fhpubforum.warumdarum.de/index.php?topic=21663.0
- I opened the filed using PowerIso and extracted it to a temporary folder
- I installed the game in the C:Program Files x86 folder
- Then I downloaded and installed DirectX as written in my previous post
I'm doing this on a hp pavilion g15-cx0830nd laptop, if that helps.
I just uninstalled it and tried again, and now after installing it I get the following error: "Unable to execute file: C:\Program Files (x86)\Forgotten Hope 2\mods\bin\launcher.exe CreateProcess failed; code 740. You're not authorized to edit this file."
That's basically it, or do you need more information?

I've tried that, but it doesn't work (same problem as written in my initial post).

Try to open the launcher with admininstrator rights.

I have already done that but it also doesn't work...:/
Here are some screenshots of my compatibility settings, my video config file and my installation folder. I hope it helps.

Somehow the link to the video config file doesn't work, so here's what it says:
VideoSettings.setResolution 1920x1080@60Hz
VideoSettings.setTerrainQuality 2
VideoSettings.setEffectsQuality 2
VideoSettings.setGeometryQuality 2
VideoSettings.setTextureQuality 3
VideoSettings.setLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicShadowsQuality 2
VideoSettings.setDynamicLightingQuality 2
VideoSettings.setAntialiasing Off
VideoSettings.setTextureFilteringQuality 2
VideoSettings.setViewDistanceScale 1
VideoSettings.setVideoOptionScheme 3

Can you try running FH2 in Windowed Mode? In the FH2 Launcher, go to Options, then Video and check the box at the bottom "Windowed Mode".
It should give you an error message when crashing. Please post that message here.
Please try this without compatibiluty mode and with compatibility mode for Win7. Run as admin always on.
-
I played it in windowed mode and gave me the error as seen on the screenshot (the error was the same with running it in windows 7 compatibility and without it). I then ran it again and adjusted the windowed mode settings to 1920 x 1080 and then it actually worked (beginning video played) but it froze at the account menu.
-
Looks like a problem with DirectX still. I have never seen this error message before, but I forwarded it to more tech savvy people in the team.
-
Thank you! And sorry for all my posts, I just really miss playing this game and I hope this can be fixed somehow.
-
Have you tried using nvidias site to download the latest drivers? Or are you using the gfx drivers that came with the laptop?
-
I have downloaded the latest drivers. I don't know what you mean with " Or are you using the gfx drivers that came with the laptop?"
I'm sorry, I'm not much of a computer tech guy, can I change to using only the gfx drivers?
-

No problem, just keep at it, in the end it will be solved :)
The drivers that came with the laptop, are the default ones: they get installed when you first start using your laptop. If you go to the Nvidia site (or whichever site from the manufacturer of your gfx card/components), there might be updated drivers there, and they might help solving the problem.
-
Now when I try to run the game in windowed mode 1920 x 1080 (that one used to only show the intro movie and then freeze at the login menu), now I get this slightly other error message before it crashes back to the desktop:
-
If Nvidia Gfx card
Right click desktop -> Open NVIDIA Control Panel
Select a task
Display -> Adjust desktop and position
Perform scaling on : select GPU
(maybe also try tick No scaling and untick Overide the scaling set by games and programs)
And use the highest possible monitor Hz in FH2 as monitor can display

Under "Select a task" it only says "3D Settings", no Adjust desktop and position. Any ideas?
-
Hmm. No idea
What fixed this issue for most people I think is setting other resolution and Hz in the video.con files.
In Documents\Forgottenhp 2\Profiles\Default
In Documents\Forgottenhp 2\Profiles\0001
In Documents\Forgottenhp 2\Profiles\0002
In Documents\Forgottenhp 2\Profiles\xxxx
ex. 1680x1050@60Hz
Maybe some kind of overlay software is running in background
Maybe install of bf2 before standaloneinstall wasnt uninstalled properly.
-
I tried to change those lines but it didn't change anything about the error.
I have installed BF2 and then installed FH2 before I tried the stand alone version, it didn't work then which is why I tried to install the stand alone...
I really hope I can find a way to fix this... Maybe someone will be able to help over teamviewer?
-
This is getting closer to complete reinstall. Delete everything FH2 related, not only via Add/remove programs, but also by manually deleting the files and folders of your profile in My Documents/Forgotten Hope 2.
Make sure nothing remains of the old installation, then start over with the standalone.
Looks like this is the only solution left, maybe someone else gas some other thought, but I'm all out of ideas.
-
:( Thank you, I’ll try that when I have time this week and I’ll report back if it worked or not.

It didn't work...:( If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them, but I think this is not going to work..
-
Really weird. I have it on Win10 myself without any trouble, although I have the "original" installation, with full BF2.
I have a hunch that it might be something gfx-card related, and that the setting recommended by Alubat above might be somewhere else in your graphics panel. Can't check it because I don't have an Nvidia card.
The only other way I know of is installing the full version, if you want to try that, make sure that you follow these steps:
- delete everything FH2 and BF2 related from your disks, including the files in My Documents
- install BF2
- install patch 1.41 and then patch 1.5
- install FH2 via the FH2 Launcher

I just connected my laptop to my tv screen and now I could find those settings and change them, it actually worked, I can play the game now!:) No idea why it worked that way! Is there a way I can play the game with 3840x2160 resolution without having to play it in windowed mode?
Thanks for the help everyone! I'm so happy:)
EDIT: Okay so I started playing and the map is completely black, I can only see some names:(
-
Did you try setting your external monitor to 'primary'?
-
Ah thanks, that did the trick! I'm sorry if I sounded lazy by asking all those questions, I'm just really not that much of a computer tech guy. Thanks everyone for replying and helping me, true heroes!
-
Hey man, nice to hear you got it working! You helped us helping you by stating your problems and having the stamina to sit this out, gj!
Now prepare to die a lot ;D
