That the responsibility for this tragedy doesn't solely lie with the Germans. I'd say for the greater part with those resistance fighters.

What? The Germans forcefully occupied a foreign country, what more responsibility is there?

Yes but they were very polite unlike those meanie resistance fighters! If only they had just nicely asked the Germans to leave!

Your point being?

What was she hoping to get from those guys anyways,  a sincere sorry for your loss?
[/quote]Yeah, I was afraid you'd say that.

So killing off ~600 civilians is actually the resistance fighter's fault? You don't see how it is the Wehrmacht overreacting heavily?

I'm truly amazed and also a bit sorry for you.

You don't think that any well thinking person would do this. They managed to break 2 prisons without firing a shot, to not provoke a response. Because regardless of the Germans being right or wrong, they still had a responsibility to their own people. And there was no reaction.
There was no reason to provoke the beast, but they still did it. At that time almost 75% of the jewish population was shipped away unprovoked. Shipments that went on schedule I might add.

But when it was clear the war was over, they decided to help by shooting up a random car.
If you pick a fight with a madman its still your own responsibilty.

And maybe get of the high horse, it was a shit time and the US airforce killed around 1000 dutch civilians in one secondary attack when there was an overcast in Germany.
And its hard to say what those old men went through on the eastern front, probably wasn't their hobby either.

And yes TS it was a shit move, but there was a huge machine of destruction crushing Germany by then (1944), and no armed contribution by dutch civilians would have altered the outcome or sped up the war.
So what was there to be gained but personal glory or revenge?
Dutch resistance needed money and coupons to look after people in hiding, when they did use force it was to get these things.
Wouldn't it have made more sence to send these items instead of weapons?
Those weapons were a means to enforce power by the government in exile, over the Netherlands so that possible communist/ groups unfavorable  to the government, wouldn't gain to much power.
Weapons in hands of the not to bright can lead to tragedies like this.

Whoa guys.. I should've posted this elsewhere.
However, it's not only about the car. It's about how the propaganda still has it's effects on those guys even today (or maybe few years ago when the video was filmed).

I agree with you on several things like:
- Jews being deported very successfully from the Netherlands (highest percentage caught Jews in Europe)
- weapons in the hands of the not so bright leads to tragedies (in general, not in this particular case per se)
- some resistance groups succeeded in doing non-violent resistance
- the allies caused many civilian casualties, but because they were the "good guys" it is swept under the rug
- towards the end of the war "the resistance" grew exponentially, because people were opportunistic

but I still can't shake the feeling that you are justifying the Wehrmacht's action by saying the "they should have known stuff like this could happen". The Putten raid was the Germans overreacting heavily and I can't understand why you wouldn't see that. "It was war" is not a valid argument, even though those oldtimers use it, I just think that's because they are out of arguments.

Also, the way the war went for Germany can never be an excuse for any sort of behaviour towards civilians of occupied countries. Yes, the destruction in Germany was huge, but they started the war, didn't they? So if they were angry with how it went by 1944, they should have worked together with Von Stauffenberg instead of killing civilians who had nothing to do with how the war went in general or the particular attack at Putten. And whether or not those old guys were at the Eastern Front, or in the Netherlands, it shouldn't really matter imo: their minds are still brainwashed, just like Dancho says. I also think that it's hard for people to be confronted with the very bad things you have done in your past, like I wrote before

Problem is that our own veterans have a hard time admitting their own warcrimes in Indonesia too. I guess it's part of human nature that you want to withdraw from anything destructive in hindsight.

One thing you write about sparks my interest: the thing about the weapons being a means to enforce power by the government in exile. Do you have any good sources on that? I'd love to read up on it.
