It had a weird plot with parts that were completely unnecessary and didnt matter at all for the end result. It had the similar "bigger is better" mentality what The Force Awakens did, which I thought was complete bollocks to begin with. And too many really lame jokes... just, too many...
I haven't even decided if I will bother seeing it yet. I thought the Force Awakens was rubbish.

I'd say TLJ is even more rubbish than TFA was.

If the spoilers I read about a main character is true, then this whole movie is bollocks. The Force Awakens was pretty meh, and Rogue One had a poor first half (but man that second half was fantastic), so I'm debating on whether to see this one.

::) why must the movie be this?
You are bathing in misery and hope, waiting for someone to come and pull the plug.

As a SW EU follower, I have to discern my source of SW film reviews. Regular film critics are like resonating SJWs these days. They will laud a film just because it has something that back their social cause, not the quality itself, or because popular revered figures raved all over it.

Professional reviewers, despite being paid ot be professional, still has too many limitations and very lacking. That's why I stopped reading car magazines despite being a petrolhead, stopped reading airplane magazines despite being an aviation enthusiasts. They just can't beat genuinely interested online community in terms of information relevance and quality.

I have problems with SW TFA (Episode 7), therefore I would most likely agree with the FH lot about TLJ.

TFAs sure have more updates, cool actions, and realism-oriented special effects. I can see why casual non-SW familiar audience mooning all over it. But for someone who has seen the best of EU's ex-cannon stories, the new characters, the plot, and everything else, the TFA's cannon are just total meh for me. I was ready to ditch my love for Kyle Katarn sagas and KOTOR back story, but TFA blew the chance away.

Saw it today and was a little disappointed.

Without giving too much spoilers:

  • It is essentially Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back reversed for the plot.
  • Too many ingenuine creaters / characters designed to sell merchandise. I like Minions from Despicable Me, but now I hate Minions. At least the original trilogy still has decency to hold until the third movie before they threw in those alien Teddy Bears. Today, investors are greedier than before, pretty much like the casino planet shown in the film.
  • Last minute unthoughtful liberal tokens. Yaay... women in leadership, there is visibly disproportionate amount of female leaders in the Resistance's leadership, you just can't help but notice. It is all great. But let's make them the losing side, let's make them have stereotypically womanly issues, so we can have another potent sexist joke material... hurr, no wonder the Resistance lost, because they are lead by women... hurr hurr hurrr. I don't know whether it is empowering or unwittingly sexist.
  • Too many original Star Wars lores are broken here, they just being totally disrespectful. At this point, I can only think of Yuuzhan Vong, at least the new canon saga doesn't have those stupid Yuuzhan Vongs.
  • Everything else is good, action packed as usual, superb special effects, intense, and visually rich. Lightsaber duels are raw and better, not like coreographed dance moves without any intention to kill. I thought the critics and paid reviewers are raving, because of either this, or point number 3, because you know, pandering to the mainstream liberal audience is profit, and it means money.

This movie just reeks of exploitation and money.

I saw Unknown Soldier (2017) on cinema tonight.

I must say I liked it. I liked the cinematography and effects. It had a couple of "what the hell" moments, like when they were in Petrozavodsk and they fall in love within two minutes. That whole scene was pretty cringy. I didn't understand why they visited them. Also when they start drinking for Mannerheim out in the forest and the one guy walks to the officers. I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

The battles themselves were nicely depicted. I liked the clearing of foxholes. A grenade swiftly followed by a SMG never fails. The dialogue is hilarious. A lot of Laconic speech and typical dead-face Finn-humor that I've learned to love while playing online games with Finns.

The third act of the movie was the best IMO. When they start to retreat and everything falls apart. The attack they have to do on prepared Russians when they are almost surrounded was absolutely nerve-wrecking. And don't get me started when the bridge is blown apart so they have to swim over. (Was it Russians or Finns who blew it up?) That got me sweating. It wasn't a feel good movie. It was as anti-war as it could get. I was glad that at least Antti survived. If _all_ the "leads" died, I would have slipped into a depression.

All in all 7.5/10. I have not seen the other movies, nor read the book.

Black Panther (2018)
by Ryan Coogler
Starring Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong'o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Michael B. Jordan, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis, and so on

The Plot
You all know it, the fantastic Kingdom of Wakanda is under threat, somebody has come from the chequered past to claim its throne, and its rightful King must fight to preserve Wakanda, as well as the rest of the world.

The Good
Wakanda is a fantastic fictional place that makes you want to explore more. Ryan Coogler is unsuspectingly a good lore-maker. Chadwick Boseman is great, regal, and elegant, befitting an African King. But Michael B. Jordan is the star, he is quite convincing, a great actor that shows clear emotions like dejection, dissappointment, as well as determination. I think he is one of the few good Marvel villains that we can actually symphatise with, given his background story.
The rest of the cast: they all received a well-balanced story telling and character development. It is not over the top, yet not too campy. Just like Marvel movies, it does occasionally make fun of you and become overly aware of typical cinema tropes, but there is only a tasteful amount of it.

The Bad
The story about modern Wakanda itself is too short. I was curious about how it manages its relationship with the rest of the world, how it plans to re-integrate, and so on.

Overall, it is made for less humorous, and a bit more serious in tone, yet not overly preachy and philosophical-wannabes.

A worthy 8.5/10. It leaves a very high mark as one of the best superhero films ever.

Wonder Woman's political hype really puts me off and actually the movie come out as rather disappointing, although I still think it is actually quite good if there weren't too many hypes surrounding it. Black Panther did suffer from similar politically-motivated hypes, but for me, it survived that hurdle, and came out rather satisfying.

100% agree, I saw it last night and really liked it. Killmonger is a great villain and you can totally understand where he's coming from. As an American, they did a great job of weaving current social dialogues with the plot of the movie. And like you said, they did it all without being too preachy.

I'm also curious as to how they'll integrate Wakandan technology with the world, but I have a feeling we'll see a bit of that in Infinity War.

You know what, I would love to see a movie about that alone! Where Wakanda shows all of these snobs about what a "farming country" can teach the rest of them. It would be a very interesting subject to explore. A spin-off movie outside the main Marvel MCU releases, like Star Wars' Rogue One would be fantastic.

I am not a big fan of political correctness, but Black Panther is just beyond that. It is about Wakanda, an African nations being righteous. It is about being bigger than hate and division. And they managed to successfully avoid the common pitfalls that ruined many DC movies when they discuss about this sensitive subjects.

I mean racists are racists, comic book fans or not, it is their loss. I always try to be fair, especially when there is a typical liberal hype surrounding it, like Wonder Woman and Black Panther, but both come out as alright, and Black Panther being a bit more special. I liked both movies, it is not too exaggerating to call both as the best from DC and Marvel respectively, considering the content alone and silencing all the political biases.

ugh all that race baiting crap is ridiculous. There's really no instances of that happening here. This is just a good comic book movie and people need to stop making it more than that

Watched Darkest Hour last night.

Follows Winston Churchill through his induction as Prime Minister on May 10th through to the start of the Dunkirk evacuation May 26th and a bit after.

I'd give it a 6 or 7/10 overall with Gary Oldman's performance being a huge highlight. The man deserved the Best Actor Oscar for the way he played Churchill. A bit exaggerated to fit with the film but overall an amazing characterization of the man.

The movie overall is pretty hyperbolic in it's depiction of Churchill and the days during the Fall of France. There's plenty of dramatic exaggeration, especially in the scene where he takes the tube (was it called the tube back then?) and talks to "common folk" about the possibility of surrendering to Germany.

Also the idea that Dunkirk was just a whim of a plan that Churchill dreamed up. It takes plenty of dramatic license.

Overall it does a good job of painting a very desperate picture of the War Cabinet during that time. I think it makes the point of showing how Churchill had the weight of the world on his shoulders very well, which is the focus of the movie. It also had great cinematography so I can see why it was nominated in that category (although I'm glad Blade Runner won).

Not a bad movie overall but don't expect a documentary type history lesson from it.

Just finished watching Avengers: Infinity War (2018) with some coworkers and friends.

By Russo brothers
Starring you know whos

The third Avengers film in the franchise, the 4th to feature ensemble cast. Super dramatic story-changing plot, so I won't do any spoilers.

But how is it?

Meh, it is starting to look like the franchise relying more on familiar faces, rather than driving an interesting plot or story telling. Sure it has been 10 years, but this latest Marvel installments probably suffered from creativity problem. Was the bar set too high after something fresh like the Black Panther? Well, probably.

Disney & Marvel quality control means this film will pass your "garbage" filter easily, unlike other filmmakers.

There is a lot of jokes to keep it entertaining, self-references, pop-culture references never gets old, and safely takes Marvel heroes from taking itself too seriously. I don't know how they do it, because I was very well prepared to roast these Marvel jokes that they overdid, like in Thor: Ragnarok for instance. But Avengers: Infinity War (part 1) really delivers it.

Progression between scenes and the transitions are somehow done tastefully to avoid "rushing". Something that is plaguing Pacific Rim: Uprising and Justice League films. There is definitely somebody doing quality control on the final product, and they definitely understand what the audience would like to see.

But that's it. Marvel films' seal of approval and no more no less.

There is nothing special happening, other than Superheroes, some meta humans, some superhumans, some demigods, some mechanics have clearly aggregated and levelled abilities, unlike what we seen in the previous Avengers and Justice League films. Sure it makes the fight interesting, but it also somewhat kills the character. The film is super anti-lore, anti-convention for the sake of presentation and plot devices. It might hurt some die hard nerds, but will be mostly okay for mainstream audiences.

Then, there is the ending. Well, I get it that this is supposed to be the "part 1". Well, how do we properly end a film? Uh, the original Star Wars Trilogy as a reference perhaps? The finish is pretty much like a couple of very lazy wipes on the anus after a bad case of diarrhea, very unsettling. The post-credit scenes also doesn't conclude anything, other than add another clue for missing puzzle.

Is this the point where we reach saturation? Fatigue?
Nope. Sorry, Mr. James Cameron, you clearly are just jelly. Suck it! You created that abomniation Titanic and reaped too many undeserving prizes.

Oh yeah, it is 7.5/10 for me. Should have been longer, and the audience wouldn't mind.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

My verdict: "Star Wars is dead. Star Wars remains dead. And Disney have killed it. How shall Mickey Mouse comfort himself, the murderers of all murderers? "

First SW movie I did not pay to see in the cinema. I am glad I did not support it. Who gave the responsibility of Star Wars to a post-modern director who apparently hates Star Wars? Anyway, I find it absolutely hilarious that Leia is the only surviving character of the trio. How will they will solve that problem is the only reason I look forward to the last movie. And her surviving the vacuum of space and force flying back was the extremely funny.

Operation Dunkirk - the Asylum rip-off of Nolan's Dunkirk, and I watched it for laughs. You should, too. At least don't take this seriously or you will be traumatised by the sheer amount of errors and mistakes. OK, so this plays against the evacuation of Dunkirk, and a group of five British soldiers are sent on a mission to retrieve a man who knows an algorithm with which the Brits will be able to build radar (erhm, yeah). The man gets shot by an SS dude who leads a bunch of German soldiers of varying ages (from 17 to 65-ish), but not before he could give the algorithm to a girl of the French Resistance (which is already in full swing in May 1940 apparently). When the five meet her, they get attacked by the SS guy and his unit, who are driving a strangely modern truck with triangualr nazi flags above the headlights. Instead of just shooting the Germans who are standing in the open with no cover, the Brits wait until the German 2-minute ultimatum ends, just to see how the SS guy uses a bazooka to blow a hole in the building where they are hiding. I could go on and on, but the movie is overflowing with this kind of crap, and it comes in many ways. A Panzer II which fires a bazooka-like round, which makes a jeep smoke, but leaves the jeep's window unscathed (ofc bec all effects are cgi), a German boobytrap while the Germans are supposed to be on the advance in that area, the German unit consisting of a mix of Heer, FJ, and SS soldiers only saying "Jawohl" when the officer has said something to them and an endscene with planes which will blow your mind if you still have one by that time. You really have to see that part yourself because you wouldn't believe me if I would describe it here. Watch for the "Scheisse, scheisse" part especially. My suggestion: take a few boxes, crates or kegs of beer, smoke something special, invite a bunch of friends and knock yourselves out

Just saw this tonight. I loved it. I'd give it 8.5 or 9/10. I really think the Russo brothers did an amazing job giving all of the hero's their allotted screen-time while also keeping the story interesting and action packed. The fight scenes were great, the CGI was phenomenal and tbh I thought the story and plot was really moving.

Centering the story around Thanos was a great choice; and they did such a great job of cultivating his story line. He's certainly one of the best MCU villains (even after the great villain they created in Black Panther) Having been a fan of all the Marvel movies from the beginning, I really felt the stakes of this movie and enjoyed the ending a ton.

That being said, it does not stand alone as it's own movie. This movie is made great off the backs of the 10 years of other movies that came before it. It completely draws on those stories and emotions to drive this one. Imo, Marvel has earned that right to make this movie not 'stand-alone' and really make it more of a service to the fans that have stuck around for the ride. (me being one of them).
