FH2/BF2 refuses to start

After Installing everything (BF2 3.0 full patch, incremental to 5.0; FH2 2.4 Full install), The game plays completely fine...once. After quitting properly the first time, neither BF2 or FH2 will start up again.  When I click on either BF2 or FH2 icons (or even the executables in the files), the screen turns black for a second, shows the desktop with the colour scheme changed, turns black again for a second, then flashed back to the normal desktop.  The light and increased fan activity are the only things showing that I had attempted to run the game.  There are no error messages or anything other than an activity indicator and a high-pitched fan.
Reinstalling it solved the issue, but only for one play.  After that, what I described above happens.  I really don't want to have to reinstall all that shit whenever I want to play for a bit.

This is EXACTLY what happend to me, and when I launch the game through BF2, I cant play any maps, it loads for about 10 seconds, then crashes to desktop with no error message, and yeah when I launch through the FH2 icon, it does what you said, goes black for a few seconds, then goes back to desktop like nothing ever happened.

You need to install Patch 1.41, then you update to 1.5. I'm not sure what you mean, when you talk about patches 3.0 and 5.0.

I install 3.0 Full install, then 1.4, then 1.41, then 1.5.  This happened even when I installed every patch from 1.1 to 1.5.

What is 3.0 Full install? I'm not aware of that.

Make it simple. Install BF2, install BF2 patch 1.41. After that, you install BF2 patch 1.5. Then you install Forgotten Hope 2.4 at last.  No need for any 3.0 versions.

Not sure though whether that will finally solve your problem.

 Go into your BF2 profiles,    it's under my documents somewhere, and doublecheck that your monitor refresh rate is compatible to your monitor's current performance.


 For some reason, this update (and the last one), can mess with your graphics options. Just use notepad to edit the line which shows your monitor refresh rate, once you edit, you can get back in-game and use the regular FH2 graphics options.

I have it set at 1024x768 with a refresh rate of 60Hz.
I have my video settings in BF2 at 1024x768 with a refresh rate of 60Hz.  Keep in mind, After each reinstall, I am able to play it once before exiting.  This means that something in the game files changes once I quit.

@dukat: I install the 3.0 patch (non-incremental) and do the incremental from there.

I'm having this problem as well. Installed 2.4 correctly, BF2 fully patched (Steam), checked profiles, the refresh rate is correct. Was able to start FH2 once and after that it won't start.

I exited correctly.  Also, something weird maybe.  When I checked processes for all users, I found out PunkbusterA.exe*32 was still running.

Are you the main user of your PC and do you have admin rights?
Does FH2.4 run in XP compatibility mode?

Only user on this computer, have full privileges and I'm running it in compatibility mode for XP SP2
