Well always make sure that your motherboard can follow up with the new graphics card. Dont make the same mistake i once made

Have a look here:

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net

The only reasonable choice is the Radeon 6850.

mother board will not be a problem. but the processor might become so what of a bottleneck, as it is not on par with the current generation.

Anyway I agree that ATI offers the best quality/price ratio these days. Nvidia seems to become more and more  high price performance ..

If I were you I'd hold on to that Q6660, get a good cooler and bump it up a notch, it will still do fine until the newish SandyBridge motherboards and processors get a bit cheaper (or if you want you can go with AMD)...
This sentence is intentionally left unfinished...

I also have a Q6600 .

Its a ok processor, but I can notice it becomes slightly outdated. I wouldn't buy a new one, but it's something you need to keep in mind when you buy a GFX card. The question is : are you planning to keep updating your system or will you buy a new system from scratch in the future ?

If it's the latter one, there is no reason what so ever to buy a top notch card, you'll have to look on the cards performance in relation to your  processor and go for the best preformance/ price ratio for the card your system can handle.

I can tell you that it feels like my system with a GTX275 seems to start hitting the roof of what I graphically can squeeze out of games. For me, I don't think mounting any better card would do me any good, as the processor seems to be the bottleneck on my system

This.

Wall of text if you're doubting: I have i5-650 processor which (according to the PRICELESS benchmarks of tomshardware) is only about 10% faster in 3D apps, and my ATI5850HD still does not use the processor's full capacity, even when playing MWLL (Crysis Wars mod that's heavier on the computer than vanilla Crysis!) or other hard-on-hardware games, the CPU use never hits 100% when running at 1920*1080 (though framerate could be better at times) even though it is quite high. Of ATI's current lineup. 6870 is the closest equivalent GPU - 6850 is actually ~10% slower than 5850!

Because 6850 is equivalent to 5830. 6870 is for 5850. Got this information from nerd when i was thinking about new computer.

I'm taking my own freedom

singing loud and strong
proving all day long
I'm takin' my freedom
puttin' it in my stroll
I'll be hop-steppin' y'all

about the cooling of the cpu: I almost learned it the hard way too, had around 80°C, and my PC started to autoshutdown.
Now i have a tower cooler which is made of cupper pipes with alu lammels.

just wondering, does anyone have a SSD?
