Lord Of War - 8/10

Very good movie.

GREAT movie. The only movie after The Wicker Man where Cage is bearable to watch.

   Predators

First part quite good, having pretty much the same feeling as Predator 1. Pretty much exactly the same , after a while it get too many similarities. Its also too predictable. I dont think really this pianist-guy suits too well in this movie and pull it one point down aswell

Lord Of War - 8/10

Very good movie.

Haha, I'm a big Nicholas Cage fan and Lord Of War is indeed one of his finest films, but The Wicker Man sucks tennisballs through a gardening hose, imo. Pointless remake. This is the first time I see somebody (who dislikes Cage) recommend this movie. I will give it another shot. :)

Saw Predators as well two days ago. I'm a big but very sensitive fan, and although it did a couple of things wrong, it also did a lot of things right.

<<< SPOILERS >>>

Robert Rodriguez is obviously a true fan of the original. The story stays true to the Predator formula but adds little differences. I had to get used to the fact that the people we follow in this movie aren't a cohesive fighting unit like in the original so it wasn't gonna be the tactical shooter I was hoping for. But the idea to take "predators" from earth (killers/elite soldiers/assassins/etc.) and pit them against Predators is a cool one and after a while I started to get more into the survival-horror aspect of the movie. Adrian Brody is a surprise in this movie as a tough leading man and the rest of the casting feels fresh. He get s alot of flak for being unbelievable, but to me it'works, and it's a sign the filmmakers had at least the right intentions with this movie. Despite it's big franchise-roots this is a low budget movie and it relies heavily on proper actors instead of overwhelming SFX.
Some action scenes could've done with some better editing/directing but the story overall works and they got the mood right. Thanks to a lot of, but not too much, nods and winks to the original.
Big minus is the fact that nobody but Hanzo got a proper death-scene. Now that is probably deliberate but I felt a bit let down. I get that they weren't making a gloryfying heroic sci-fi epic (you know, with slo-mo shots, heroic deeds and all) and in the end it fits with the movie: it's a bunch of single-minded individuals who are trying to survive. It wasn't like a fantasy RPG band of merry explorers where everybody had his thing, the warrior, the mage, etc. Here we have a sniper who doesn't snipe and a minigun sporting guy who doesn't support, for example. I would've liked to see that movie, but Rodriguez probably had other ideas.

Pro: story, look, feel
Cons: actionscenes could've easily been better, even with the absent of proper military tactics. A couple of FX shot don't convince, but that's thanks to the budget I guess. At least they use 'm wiesly.

Well I couldn't wait any longer for it to be shown on TV so I bought the DvD Che - Part One and Two - The Complete Story.

If like me you haven't read much about him etc I'd say the film does a fair job of filling you in on the Guerilla warfare in Cuba.
Nice fighting action etc, plenty of  Garand rifes on show, >Part 1<  is all about that.
Check out Damian Bichir who plays Castro + the Epic Beard homage!  8) (I've adopted it as my own beard template! :D )

>Part 2< is when Che tries to start a similar revoloution in Bolivia, and this part captures fail after fail after fail, good action sceens mixed with lots of walking through jungles etc You do get the feeling of "Oh noes" a lot as it all falls apart with the CIA trained Bolivian Army on their tails.

I had to watch the films bit by bit, they are both 2 hrs long.

I'd give 7.5/10 for Part 1  7/10 for Part 2.  :)

Nothing is impossible in Wuxia movies, that's the cool thing about it! ;-)
But, even though I adore Hero, it could've done with a little less style over substance, choreography-wise (Zhang Yimou made the same "mistake" in House Of Flying Daggers). Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon did that way better, with more grounded combat. If you have Donnie Yen and Jet Li going head to head in your movie you skip the slo-mo, CGI and wires and you simply film the magic that takes place. :) But overall the movie is a work of art.
If you like the more "realistic" asian period movies, I strongly suggest you watch Korean flick "Musa - The Warrior", if you haven't already. Cinematic perfection, imo. And yes, all the 4 films mentioned have Ziyi Zhang in them. God, I was so in love with her 10 years ago...  :P

And Capten, thanks for reminding me of Che 1 & 2. Only now I remember I only saw part 1 in the cinema and forgot about ever seeing part 2. But I must admit I wasn't that impressed by it. Of course, it's maestro Soderbergh and the movie is meticulously well made and acted, but as a movie it just didn't grab me that much. In comparison: I missed the 3rd part of the Swedish Millennium trilogy in the theatre recently and am still bummed out about it cuz I have to know how it ends. Not so much with Che 1 & 2, apparently.  :-\
Not a negative comment per sé, I was just surprised by the fact that I haven't thought about that movie untill you brought it up here. But will look it up.

I think they are both films that I'd have trouble concentrating on at the Cinema too, definatley slow to come to the boil. They are best enjoyed in your own time when you can take a break in between for a cup of tea/beer/piss insert of your choice.  ;)

Shutter Island.

I give it a 9/10.

What can I say, I am a big Martin Scorsese fan.
With Shutter Island he provides a thriller with a twisted end. The scenes are beautifull to watch.

Small plot outline. Set in 1954, a Marshall (Leonardo Di Caprio) investigates the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane.
He is not getting cooperation from the staff? Someone is holding back. Why?

Go see this one if you haven't done already.
The movie is based on Dennis Lehane's novel. He is an author mentioned in this thread:

The Good, The Bad, & The Weird

7/10

;) epic funny film with Sth korean style.
Some anachronism about weapons (the weird carry walther p38) but otherwise nice.
Something refreshing, i just hope more foreign film to become more accessible (chinese/russian/finnish ww2 film)

Stalingrad: 8,5/10
Pretty well done. Sure, uniforms and other things aren´t totally accurate, but the way this movie tells the story from a German perspective is great. No gloryfication, no heroes, just dirt, pain, agony, officer assholes and the mercyless and cold Russian Winter. The Russians are portrayed as human beings as well, and the Germans are neither heroes nor are all of them monsters. The end is tragic and leaves a strange feeling, after you´ve finished this great movie.

PS ;)

But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
and not a soul to hear.
